A Tent in Arctic Siberia - Living, Moving, and Making a Reindeer Skin Tent.
In the far north of Siberia on the Yamal Peninsular a remote group of nomadic reindeer herders still live in tents whose design may date back thousands of years. The precursor to the modern tipi (tepee), the choom is made of fir poles and has covers of reindeer (caribou) hide. They move every few days throughout the winter so that the herd can gain access to the hidden fields of lichen that lie beneath the snow.

A short research film looking at the making and moving of the traditional choom (also chum or tchum) of the Siberian reindeer herding nomads on and around the Yamaal Peninsular. See

Truth is ... these are some of the strongest people on earth. Especially the ladies.. carrying these heavy wooden tent. Taking it apart. And being able to live in these temperatures. All they got is their family and reindeers. No hospital, supermarket, running water. I trully admire them.

You can feel that they have really asked which bits of modern technology are worthwhile. The iron stove was introduced in the first half of C19th and is vital in winter, but many leave it behind in the summer as the smoke keeps off the mosquitoes. If you look carefully you can see a plexiglass porthole in one tent, but they crack in the cold so they have given up on them now. They are not stuck in the past but always evolving to survive the harsh environment.

I am just 1 of many who could Survive that kind of Cold Weather , Don't think I could Handle taken apart my Home and moving it either ,These women work without mitts or gloves on their hand , I admire them how they work as a great team .
Esse povo merece respeito, porque eu jamais conseguiria viver em um lugar abaixo de zero, 15 graus para mim já é muito frio, que Deus abençoe à todos eles sempre.

I have a painting at home by Charles Russel of American teepees in the early 1800s. I wondered how wintering in these houses was on the high plains of the American West. That drew me to your video. Thanks.
It's amazing how quickly and efficiently they break down and pack up the camp you can definitely tell they have done that once or twice before

@@dianemoose9982 it's written in the description: "They move every few days throughout the winter so that the herd can gain access to the hidden fields of lichen that lie beneath the snow."
This is a massive amount of work!! I would never last!
The Inuit of Northern Canada’s ancestry. We have Caribou and they have reindeer. The only difference is we hunt them on the annual migration. Either way we rely on them for food and clothing. Very interesting video. Thank you for posting.

Another fantastic film. Thank you. I love that you show how it is used, dismantles, and then how one is made. I presume that the skins last for a very long time.

They said a cover can last 20-30 years then the outer one becomes the inner and a new outer layer is made. Effectively a tent can last forever as it is constantly renewed.

Yeah! That was amazing to watch. I was wondering how they were going to handle the last three poles standing, and they had a whole system worked out. Great video!
