Frieren is a Hopeful Masterpiece (On How to Love, Awkwardly)

Фильм және анимация

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is, in my humble opinion, anime of the year. It is a lightning in a bottle anime that shows us its heart and its message as honestly as it can. There are more themes and moments that I could ever do justice, even in a video of this size. But I'm going to try my best to explain, why this anime is, to me, a masterpiece.

Anyone who thinks Frieren (both the character and the show) are emotionless must think that you need to be super emotive to show emotions. I struggle with showing most emotions and I saw a lot of myself in Frieren. Frieren shows she cares in more subtle ways and I appreciated seeing someone like that take the lead role in a show.

The show used facial emotions so subtly but so powerfully to show the budding relationship between stark and fern (whether romantic or not) in that dance scene. When it starts, Fern looks so uncomfortable, and then she looks at Stark, and her discomfort fades, and after the camera pans past Starks head obstructing the view of Ferns face you see that she is smiling. That level of storytelling without words but also without exaggerated movements or expressions is extremely rare, especially in anime. You see her go from uncomfortable in the situation to eventually finding comfort in Stark until finally she is outright enjoying herself.

My view is that Frieren seems emotionless to humans because of the simple fact of time. Humans live in the now in the moment, passing one after another. They feel their emotions immediately and powerfully. Elves, on the other hand, feel their feelings, but their lifespans allow them, normally, to come to terms with them over years or decades. Frieren crying over Himmel is an anomaly to Elves as we've been shown. But that's probably because of Himmel and Heiter and Eisen. That 1/100th of her life changed her that much. Note: I say Humans feel etc etc. Based entirely on the source of the anime, not real life.

Frieren has only ever cried for Himmel. She cried on Heiter's deathbed because she regretted not spending enough time with Himmel. She wanted Heiter and Fern to make more memories together because their relationship reminded her of her relationship with Himmel.

I am not certain why @rumaristo129 's comment is upsetting/disturbing to me, but it is. Maybe it is due to how much loss I've personally experienced in life and my ability to relate or simply how cold and selfish Frieren' s character would have to be in order to think in such a manner? I like her character and so would prefer not to imagine her in that way. Or perhaps it is because of how one-dimensional it makes her character out to be. Either way I don't know how you can say such a thing, nonsense. Frieren isn't written as a jaded character who is incapable of loving and caring for others. A bit clueless when it comes to understanding emotions? Sure, but she is not absent of them. If she were she would have no ability to cry if she lost Fern either and I simply can't imagine that. So OF COURSE she'd shed tears over Heiter while sitting at his deathbed. And those tears would be for him, not Himmel. I agree in those circumstances old memories can come flooding in. Thoughts and grief over the loss of yet another person you cared for might also bring others to mind. But to imply she only had the capability to love and cry for one being is so out there I can't follow the logic. Love has no such boundaries or restrictions and the heart's ability to love is endless. To imply she was not capable of shedding a tear for a dear friend as he literally lay dying in front of her eyes makes me question how much loss you have yet to experience in your life. To quote Eisen, "That's not how relationships work" and I certainly wouldn't want to wish for you to experience more loss to find more of an understanding. I am a romantic at heart myself but people are building up this romance to be far more then would ever be possible for this writer to depict. At this rate people are going to be sorely disappointed at the story's conclusion.

@@genesishep I'm sorry my comment was upsetting to you. I think Frieren is still in the process of understanding relationships and at this point she would totally cry if Fern or Stark passed away. She didn't cry over Heiter because she actually got to say a proper goodbye to him. In Himmel's case, she took his life for granted, and not spending enough time with him is her biggest regret. Her inability to recognize Himmel's romantic feelings is tragic but relatable. Frieren is one of my favorite fictional characters ever. I'm 100% sure the writer is building up a romance between Frieren and Himmel. Have you read the manga?

  • @genesishep

@@rumaristo129 There is no need to apologize for how I took something. I appreciate your kind reply though. I'm well aware that the only person responsible for my actions or reactions is myself. I only meant to express my feelings not place blame for them. Interpretations of a work like this are always subjective and personal. I have not yet read the manga. I only learned of the story from the anime. I am purposely resisting the urge to read it since they are doing such a good job with the anime I do not want to ruin the surprise. My comment about the level of build up comes from both personal experience and how common the same feelings are often expressed by others who fail to manage their expectations. Unmanaged expectations can ruin the reception if the author is unable to meet the unrealistic expectations fans have fantasized about. There are so many examples of this happening particularly in the anime world. And so, at the conclusion I expect that Frieren will realize her feelings and emotions at some point in the story however her personality wouldn't mesh with an overly emotional display. I expect some tears, some reflection, some regret, acceptance and lastly a realization that the time they spent together was precious. Perhaps an admission that describing their Journey as a mere 10 years was completely inaccurate. Beyond that I have no clue what grand gestures fans are expecting. Does that make sense?

Frieren made me realise why I still can smile, laugh, and be happy even with the tragic past I've had - the deaths of family I used to love and the regrets I've had, and that's because I do love the present - the current people around me who cares about my existence and remembers me, the hopes my long gone loved ones had for me, and that it would be an insult to them if I live miserably.

I can already see the black panel that reads "50 years after their journey ended" turn the page to Frieren holding the hand of an 80 year old Fern in bed. Can't wait for you Dungeon Meshi video. What a whimsically eldtrich series of hijinks those characters get up to.

Frieren really embodies the hope for humanity. It is realistic, but it doesn’t take the doom and dreaded mood that most modern media takes. Frieren portray humanity’s bright side without over exaggerating it. A true rare state for a modern media where being cynical is being realistic

Jokes on you I cried anyways- this was beautifully written my god! I’ve watched a lot of essays on Frieren, but this one comes the closest to capturing how I feel about the series. Even though people discuss the flaws of Serie’s philosophy or how the demons have no connections to highlight Frieren’s growth in making connections, none of them seemed to discuss how the wider world fits in with the more intimate and personal messaging. Frieren is just one person that was touched by her party, and her kindness ripples out through the entire world. All the characters have lost something, lost someone, but they keep choosing to love and care and connect all the same, in defiance of what they “should” be or “should” do. Thank you for writing this, I’ll definetly be looking forward to your work in the future.

A heartfelt, thoughtful analysis on a genius piece of storytelling. For example, I missed that Frieren reminded Serie that Serie maintained her flower garden with the same field of flowers spell that she declared worthless. No wonder she banned Frieren for a thousand years. No one likes it when their hypocrisy is exposed as being that transparent. But Frieren sums it up best when she tells Lerner: "Serie is a child."

I think the real reason that Serie passed Methode wasn't because she said she was "cute" (though that probably could have thrown her off enough she would pass) but because Methode was the only person who was able to resist her mind reading ability, as demonstrated by her having to ask "what did you think when you came in here"

None of the characters in Frieren are throw away. Every one of them, even the villagers or other regular people they meet in passing on their journey are meaningful. This show feels alive because of that. And don't you dare think I didn't catch you putting Aeris' theme at the end of your video. Well chosen, but dang, way to put another emotional layer on this emotional series.

Brilliant and highly accurate essay on "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End"! Bravo! But at least for me, this is a fantasy story that plays like reality, because at her core, she feels the reality of transcendental love; a world where people care about others. Let fantasy rest on the shelf while one takes down to heart the real of her core emotion, the mother love between Frieren and Fern which both lost but find as each becomes the mother to the other.

For those interested, the name of the soundtrack when Clone Frieren unleashes a black hole is called "Knife to the Throat", and it is funny how, despite it appearing in the preceding episode and even as far back as Stark's fight against Linie, I cannot associate it with anything other than the Frieren vs Frieren fight. Same thing with "Zoltraak". It first played during the fight against Qual, but I really noticed it during Fern's fight against Lügner. And the soundtrack for the passing of time is my favorite of the whole OST along with "Knife to the Throat".

They've both had such a massive impact on the anime world as a whole and I'm interested to see what else keiichirou will direct and bless us with. Just as bocchi still hasn't died out after a year and a half, i doubt frieren will either, and i think it'll stay as no. 1 on mal for a pretty good amount of time as it has been for months after s1 finished so far. This is definitely and anime i will recommend to new anime fans in the future.

Hi Locklan, I just finished watching your review once (planning to watch again later) and loved it! Do you mind me asking some technical editing questions (last time I asked and suggested things, it backfired on me badly as the KZreadr wasn't pleased and gave me a lecture :( I hope my questions don't piss you off this time! Will see.) So wow, wow, your video is so well made! May I ask what is your workflow like and editing tools used? You must have spent like hours making this (30+ hours)? Your anime sequences/images/timing match so well with the points you were trying to make and characters you were talking about! Must have taken you lots of time to markup/index them and was this an ongoing process as you were watching the eps live or you did it at the end? Frieren is definitely one of my fav anime (and manga) and I love the insights and takes that I missed and got a lovely time to revisit these ideas with the anime sequences that felt like I'm rewatching my fav bits! P.S. May I share a Off on a #Tangent story? So I like fellow Canadian director David Cronenberg and he once told a story of how he spotted and wanted Robert Pattinson to star in his film Cosmopolis (2012). Lovely to watch that KZread video interview where I think Cronenberg said he thought of Pattinson might be a good fit by watching a random KZread video of Pattinson! Yes, Cronenberg was watching random KZread videos like us and yes, magic! So I don't know you personally and I think this is probably the first video (?) I watch by you. Anyway, I wish this lovely video you made be your own version of the flower field magic! Who knows who will watch this video and love it and impact them (and you)? #GoodLuck P.P.S. I've been watching Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night this April 2024 season and loving it. I'm not a betting person but I'm betting my 25 cents for it being the top anime of the April 2024 season. Time will tell. Don't know if you are watching it or planning to do a review of it. If you do, I will totally watch it! BTW, I don't remember if I've watched your Apothecary Diaries video but I'm hoping to watch it soon. Thanks again!

Hey Kempton, thanks for the kind words, I’ll try to respond to each bit. Regarding Jellyfish I’ve only heard good things and I think that’s what I’ll watch next though Dungeon Meshi will be my next video. As for workflow, I watch the anime first, then occasionally do a second viewing, write the script, record, gather clips and music, then I assemble it together. I start with the spoken stuff and music, then add in the clips and time everything with my own script and whatever music I used for that part of the script. I don’t mark a ton of stuff since I generally remember most of the scenes in the anime and pick and choose what makes most sense visually or emotionally. It definitely is a long process and I go from start to finish while reviewing the section ls I’ve already done. Hope this explanation is helpful!

Seriously, the only criticism of this video that is remotely viable is your pronunciation of "Flamme". ;) The substance of what you're saying is fantastic, even if in few instances I would have said something else, or would disagree slightly. That's the beauty of well made art - there is no "objectively correct" way to interpret it. And while I really don't care about MAL scores as other people seem to do, I'm glad that it managed to dethrone FMAB and show people that there is a show capable of doing that for more than 2-3 weeks. As for nitpicks (or rather place you could have expanded on and you showed in my opinion from only 1 point of view) - when you were talking about Lord Orden and you said that his situation parallel the situation with his family.... while it is true you forgot to mention that Lord Orden subverts this parallel. By acting in different manner than Stark's father did. And he shows that while superficially he acts very similar to Stark's father, when he goes beyond superficial, differences are quite... stark (pardon the pun). And Stark's (Stark means "strong" and in German) equivalent in this Family - young kid named "Mut" (Courage) is slowed down in his progress by being told that if he trains well, he will someday be a better warrior than his father. This serves as a foil to whole Stark's family situation and as an example to Stark that as bad as his father's treatment was of him (I'm not defending him, by any means), doing the opposite might not have been ideal either. Something as complex as parenting and teaching important skills require both love and discipline. They require genuine feedback etc. - this is one of few places where I thought your video was a bit one sided. But if you mentioned everything that I think should be said - video would be at least 3 hours long. OK. I have 9 minutes left - I usually don't comment before I finish the video, but I didn't want to lose my train of thought. Take care and I hope you will get more views! P.S. I had a quick look into the comments, where while people praise you they also have some opinions that they present as "Ultimate Truth". While it is obvious that everyone presents their own opinion (since as I said there is no way to "objectively true interpretation" of the art), don't let it get to you. It is one of the negative side effects of Frieren being so popular. You get elements of fanbase that are "certain" that their interpretation is correct. They can sometimes get toxic. Personally I don't subscribe to the theory that one always has to say "In my opinion", but I have over 30 years of experience appreciating various forms of art so I know that what others say is just their opinion/interpretation of the art. But for example - you were correct in saying that Frieren cried for Himmel at his funeral and for Heiter on his deathbed. And the person saying that Frieren cried, because it Fern and Heiter situation reminded her of her own with Himmel is also correct. Both of them are not mutually exclusive. The only part that is exclusive is saying "Frieren has only ever cried for Himmel". It is based on interpretation and it might be true. But it is not certain. To me it looked like she cried both because she wanted Fern and Heiter to make more memories together and it reminded her of the fact that she didn't do it with Himmel AND because she realized he was dying and she won't be able to make more memories with him. His time has come nearly to the end and maybe if she spent one day less on translating and one day more on being with Heiter it would be better? That kind of regret might be going through her mind. In the end art is about what you as a viewer make of it, how it affects you, how you resonate with it. Not even what author could say about it is more important than what you took away from viewing and appreciating form of art.

@@LocklanStareyes OK. I finished watching it. And yes, there were 2 categories of people who were initially "disappointed" with Frieren. People who said it was too slow and people who said it peaked during Episode 1 and that the further you went from it the more the "tone" shifted. Funnily enough the latter group overlapped decently with people who thought that first OP didn't suit the show. As a Manga reader I actually liked it, because Frieren is a show that is both sad and happy at the same time. Yes, sad, nostalgic, melancholic things happen and sometimes they are even main topic of the episode. But the main point (as you said, just using different words) is that life continues and one cannot stop living and just treasure their memories 24/7. They have to look to the future. In the limit it is because if they don't then they will have regrets about not getting to know their current comrades. If you want to read Manga - there are couple scanlation sites that are decent. I would love to support author by buying Manga, but sadly Frieren doesn't ship to my country. I tried, I ordered it at Amazon, it said that it will be delivered in 3 days (first 2 volumes). I waited 6 months and even paid for "next day" delivery. Nothing. They had to give me my money back in the end. And that happens with a lot of Manga. If it isn't going in larger batch to my country or if someone didn't buy them in bulk and is now selling for 300% of the price - it is hard to get Manga here. Very aggravating. They simply "lose money" for sending 1 copy of it for some reason (and this happens with some books as well). 1 good thing about Scanlation is that they are only couple days behind Japanese release. I will now look on your channel and watch some other videos. I will try to get what "taste" you have. Maybe then I can suggest some Anime to you - assuming you didn't watch it yet. I watch a lot, but there are people who watch a lot more.

Apologies if this was already mentioned, but given your interest in the series' Goddess of Creation, note it is not said she has never appeared, but rather she has not appeared since the Age of Mythology (which was before Frieren's time presumably, perhaps before Kraft's time even, but still something she regards as historical). Frieren seems to believe she exists or existed at least, but since it's unclear if she still has any interaction with the world she has mixed feelings on "believing" in her as an object of worship (and she also dislikes that the goddess' magic is not something that can be researched).

Regarding Serie not killing the Demon King, I personally wonder if there is more reason for it than her simply not being willing to try. In that same conversation Flamme equates herself as being the same as Serie in not being able to kill him, stating "we cannot do it," and this from a woman who hates demons as much as Frieren herself does and does want a peaceful era. Perhaps the Demon King had some kind of magic that made him invincible to people with the mindset of Flamme and Serie (Flamme certainly liked peaceful magic, but she does confess at the end of her life that all she taught Frieren was magic for killing demons).

The two of them are trapped in a 5 senses illusion of the desire that one (or both) of them could not achieve. The illusion they have is of them at their wedding. While it could be Himmel having given up on it, it is probably the future Frieren wanting to marry him, but he's dead.

Cannot forget that creature that uses memories of who you love to hunt & trap you .
