I really thought the 1st 5 episodes were boring and almost gave up on it but decided to give it another try then episode 7 is where things started to spice up. Now i regret saying the earlier episodes were boring because after watching almost the whole season, i cant count how many times ive replayed the earlier episodes the ones i called boring. And the reason is himmel. He is such a good character. The flashbacks are so meaningful and everything ties up to him

I also had the same thought, the first 4 or 5 eps felt so slow, but they are actually the foundation of the anime, after I watched the next episodes, then all first 5 eps made sense. I can't think of better ways to start Frieren than this way. I remember the same feeling when I watched Steins Gate, I almost gave up on some of the first episodes, so boring, but my friends kept telling me to watch it, only then I could appreciate it.

Boring isn't a way I'd describe the series. Slow and deliberately measured breath of air is about how I say it to people when I recommend it. There is action, but it's not the main focus. It's about the space in between the action. I love that in a fast paced reels and shorts world, there is the peaceful slow pace of Frieren.

A really interesting perspective, and one I can even relate to. I'm in my 50s now, but somehow the 4 years of high school still seemed to last longer in my memories than the 15+ years I've been with my current company. And yet still a day seems to last the same amount of time; when you're older the importance and immediacy of that day changes, particularly when looked at in hindsight.

I remember seeing a Vsauce video like 12 years ago about perception of time. Every year added segments your existence. If you’re only 5 then your whole existence is in 5 sections. If you’re 50 you now have 50 segments. Your existence is now spread across 50 instead of 5.

You've connected some loose wires in my brain. I'm normally a Slice of Life fan bc I appreciate their reverence for (glorification of?) the mundane, ordinary parts of life. I love the parts of this show that are like this. You describe this aspect of the show as "human". It isn't the Shounen part of popular shows that I dislike, it's that they're Battle Shounen. The reason this Shounen is so up my alley is bc it's a Slice of Life Shounen. How interesting. Thank you for the insight.

Well I don't know how it can be "boring". It feels like some people consider boring everything that is not screaming in your face 24\7. It is calm beautiful story, it has action in it, it has strong emotions, it has humour, but it mostly concentrates on describing the beauty of the moment and philosophical questions. But not in a nerdy heavy way - it keeps it light but deep in the same time. I watched all of it in one breath and it keeped me involved and entertained from the start to the end. As for me, it's a perfect composition, not overloaded like some other titles. It leaves your mind a space to rest, to enjoy this fantasy world, but then strikes with another gem of the exciting action or the deep emotion

Yeah Frieren is only boring to someone who feels they need almost constant action and/or drama to make a show interesting. There's already copious amounts of shows like that and I'm glad Frieren is different. If someone isn't into Frieren they can find millions different shows that cater to their tastes. The ways Frieren is different is what makes it so beautiful to me. And also someone who would want Frieren to be more fast-paced kinda misses the whole point of this story being after the big epic adventure. Also bit offtopic but still touching this subject. This is the argument one of the executive producers for the Witcher show used to justify the show being so fast-paced. Because apparently they cater it to kids or adult children who would get bored if there wasn't an action scene in every episode. I knew it was such a stupid thing to say back then and now looking back after Frieren's success it sounds even way more stupid.

@@saparapatepete Thank you for that excellent question. I don't know, back in 2010 I really hated gate keeping. But in recent years I came to the conclusion that gate keeping doesn't really stop people from entering a new fandom, BUT it keeps up the spirit of those who first discovered and evangelized something genre breaking and new. As long as those OG fans can protect the IP by assimilating new fans to the core values of that IP, the IP will not so quickly transform into something that tries to appeal to everyone and will keep its distinct features that made it worthwhile in the first place. To quote Arrowhead Game Studios here: "A game for everyone is a game for no one" and I believe this is true for Manga as well. New fans will of course enrich a community by their ever increasing diversity, but only if the growth factor is healthy for that community. I mean a lot depends on the creators and how they are able to handle something like exponential growth. It's a complex topic, but I am now on the side of people who really believe that Gate Keeping is something we should consider to be better for the health of a community as it sounds. Apart from that my OG Post was purely meant to be satirical in nature but true in spirit.

speaking about "ordinary". the most funny thing about this show, at least to me is that some events there are PREDICTABLE, but it still make you loose your shit when it happens, because its not about WHAT happen, its about HOW it happen. this show respect its wiever. it knows we're smart enough to predict some things, and instead of giving us a plot twist that's impossible to predict(aka deus ex machina), it gives us what we predicted but making it look so cool, nobody gives a single fuck about it being predictable. the best example is ep.10. half of the episode we see flashbacks and learn about mana supressing thing, we understand it was 1000 years ago and now Frieren mastered it to unimaginable level. then you remember how Aura's magic work and say "oh, i know what gonna happen next". and it happens. and in the moment of culmination, when Frieren release her mana you sit there and like "i knew its gonna happen, i knew its gooooooooooooooooooo FUCK! HOLY SHIT!"

Serious question WeebJail, Why didn't your channel pop off yet, I wrote couple of months back on your steins;gate videos that you've got it all figured out i enjoyed and still am enjoying your content but, KZread doesn't seem to think so. Im starting to question if all you do really need to succeed on youtube is good videos. Your content is in similiar quality to people like gigguk and other people on anitube. What do you think, is the niche of anime just too satiated or are you just unlucky, you obviosly had success with your attack on titan video but, then in contrast this video about frieren was not that good from the analytic side, idk maybe steins;gate analasis videos which your channel mainly consists of don't have a huge, audience they can reach cause not so many people are maybe interested in that kind of style of videos. You probably have also put way more thought into this than I did though, so do you know why you aren't big yet?

  • @WeebJail

haha idk if im gigguk quality but assuming i am it would probably be a combination of saturation, video packaging (ability to make good titles/thumbnails), and maybe a little bit luck. time is also another factor, growth on platforms like youtube is very exponential.

Tbh im getting a bit tired of the word boring, its like the only way an anime can be considered "good" is when the action picks up, if anything i was a little wary when they got to the test cause i was concerned it was just going to be another exam arc(which tbf it was to some extent) but what made it good was that it all stayed focused on people, humanity(and elfmanity?), it didnt get caught up in overblown drama or comparing power. I like that frieren feels a little less like an anime and more like just a story, its not just an arrangement of the same tropes and stock scenarios anime repeat over and over again its actually taking a set of characters and a situation and seeing how one thing follows from another and doesnt rely on flash to cover every important moment. Life is not as mundane and meaningless as people make it out to be(im not talking in an ideological or philosophical sense... well i guess everything could be reguardless) art emerges from life, life is where these ideas come from, they may be more focused and dressed up than reality but that doesnt mean reality is something boring and unrelated its the originator of these ideas its why things are relatable, because we have lived some analogy to these things. Its a little annoying how even in videos about how good an anime like this is we still seem to only be able to talk about it in the frame of being boring, in contrast to things that spend all their time trying to excite you through action or drama or comedy, we dont talk about film this way, or books, people dont talk about how the hobbit is good cause its boring it just feels the way it feels and that feeling is right for the story, things can be mellow without meaning its boring or unengaging. I personally find drama and action a little tiring at this point and hope to see more human stories like this, cause tbh it does really limit the number of anime im interested in watching.

Frieren’s understated tone is so interesting. The action, jokes, and heart-tugging don’t really demand your attention-instead it presents a masterpiece you have to choose to engage with to get the most out of it. Like a wise old person quietly dispensing their wisdom. I also love the anachronistic art style. With the amazing film emulation it looks both like it came out today and decades ago, which is so fitting for the character.

There’s nothing to choose to engage with. The show being boring in every single aspect is not a positive. This just means you have too much free time on your hands so you spend it consuming meaningless content.

Weren't Serie actually saying in that context, that since Flamme spread magic to human kind, that the humans will surpass the Frieren since they aren't stagnant or complacent the way elfs are, because humans can't afford time to be, so Frieren should keep up?

I'm kinda disliking the show's move from the "boring and mundane" into the "exciting." While I look forward to a season 2, I worry there will be an increase in the number and length of fight scenes along with world building expositions needed to make everyone feel the fight scenes didn't create plot holes. I dread a focus on the politics, fights and technicalities instead of the everyday moments that actually make all the political nonsense and fighting worth the effort. The unfortunate reality is that this show will probably fall victim to the very thing that it originally set out to expose: Losing sight of what really matters.

Your perspective is nice, but I disagree and don’t think it’s accurate to who Frieren is as character. The story? Yes. However the character just displays too many instances of undermining time and its passage to embody that. This video ignores the smaller moments like how she never gave Fern presents until it dawned on her that maybe she should. The passage of time was shown to us slowly not for the character but for the viewer as it was the first introduction to it. After all, we never get another time passage scene quite like the first one again. Frieren does a bunch of things because she’s used to have so much time, so she learned to keep herself busy. After all, it’s not like she can just scroll the internet endlessly. After all, she’s shown to be lazy and take her time. Frieren didn’t like dungeons until Hummel convened her that they were worth it. Again, your perspective is not bad for the show as a whole, it’s just not accurate to the character. I get that the story is about living life and enjoying from the simple to the crazy. I just think don’t this reading of the character is fully genuine. Maybe I just don’t agree with your view on the ordinary, but I simply can’t see it. Also your video was pretty "boring."

  • @WeebJail

    @WeebJail

here's something i maybe didn't touch on enough in the video that might convince you. i don't think frieren is necessarily conscious of how her own mind works. she's ditzy and often a fool, and the reason she acts this way is, as you said, because of other people. the reason she likes boring magic, the reason she takes life slowly, is mostly because of flamme. the reason she likes dungeons is because of himmel. so when i say she knows how to live a fulfilling life, she might not know WHY she knows that. and she might not even know THAT she does. but she does and it's because of her friends.

Interesting; you use the word "Boring" as a means to "get A Rise" out of your listeners. That's one reason why i enjoy teaching English so much; because it reveals so much about a person's values and character. You enjoy infuriating people on purpose, NOT for malicious reasons, but because you like to make them think. I prefer to tell people the truth. in the case of Sou Sou no Freiran, I would NOT use the word "Boring". I would use the word "Ordinary" or "Mundane", because for me, the word "Boring" has the wrong, negative connotations, though using the word to infuriate people makes sense. You use it to gain the attention of other people because that ATTENTION is what is important to you. I prefer the truth and honesty as much as possible. The truth may confuse, infuriate, or even hurt another person, but i prefer that to gaining the attention of others if they do not want to pay attention to what I have to say. That's the way Jesus always 'preached". he just sat down somewhere and began talking. Eventually people would just ordinarily gather around him to listen. Definitely it's very different from the DEI dictators that push their policies and opinions on others, and THEN they get royally pissed when you don't agree with them . In the end, i like Frieren because i like it's story, and it's characters, and the artist's graphic style. Any 'life's lessons" that I get out of it is the icing on the cake, but just the icing. I'm very glad that we both like it though.
