that was not the point, war generates developpement fast by need of defense, so it creates spells, upgrades them, create strategy and stuffs, it make a world more exciting for someone like Serie. She totally could obliterate the fuck out of the demon king BUT it was not in her interest. To Serie research and developpement is a tool not a purpose, so making it fast is necessary and to frieren research is just fun, it's a game. To Serie magic is a form of power, to Frieren magic is fun.

Despite the implications i believe Frieren is still more powerful than Serie. Frieren doesn't have the advantage of millenia of accumulated knowledge, and probably has less mana, but not by a lot. She however casually displays more practical skills in battle, and in dealing with unknown magic. I don't know if Serie simply didn't care to deal with Macht, but it seems like a stretch to say she could, but just let him sit there for 50 years. At the same time Freiren deciphered Di Algoze in only two months and dispelled it instantly. Her also breaking Serie's barrier after only a day shows that she has the abilities to counter Serie's superior knowledge. Fern being able to hurt Frieren clone shows that age and mana of a mage doesn't necessarily guarantee victory. I would really like to see the showdown at some point.

​​@@nikkan3810actually, no. Magic in the series is visualization. And Serie is basically beyond that, even by Frieren's standards. To add up, Frieren doesn't know every magic Serie has and is even aware of magic that only Serie can perform and pass on to her students.

@@mansoola1231 She left Macht alive to preserve the opportunity to dispel Di Algoze which she for some unknown reason decided not to do. Freiren not believing she can overcome Serie doesn't necessarily mean that she can't. She simply doesn't want to. But if she had to, with how rules of this world's magic operate, she would provide some real challenge to Serie. Again, Serie still doesn't have any significant feats behind her except those that Freiren surpassed, such as breaking invincible barriers, dispelling unbeatable curses and fighting and defeating enemies that know no equal. Imagination is clearly more important in this world than anything else, and imagining a thing isn't as hard as you think it is, especially when you have the will. Hell, bro, Freiren multiple times stated doubt in her abilities in dealing with problems that she then blasted away unphased, so her testimony in that regard isn't reliable, she's underselling herself.

Flamme really left something to keep the two elves busy for thousands of years. Serei was kinda hesitant of the notion of having the entire continent able to use magic... Now she dwells in finding new and interesting mages created by Flamme's spreading of knowledge of magic.

They are probably closely rated in power level. But Serie probably can’t visualize life after the Demon King is defeated, and visualization is important in magic. While the Demon king could probably visualize living after Serie with no issue.

but when serie questioned flame & said “you think i can’t” flamme responded it was specifically because of her beliefs. Series knows how strong her beliefs are & yet when she questioned Flamme she referred to strength. Not to mention Flamme confirmed that’s also why she hasn’t gone against the demon King despite being HIGHLY HIGHLY capable. This implies that it’s like a concept. *in order to defeat the demon king, you have to believe in peace itself* like how isekai protagonists have a cheat code, this is the demon kings cheat code. which could explain why he wanted so much chaos & killed off the elves, not because they’re potential. *but because all of them are inevitably peaceful* this could also explain himmel & his party was able to defeat the king, bc he is peace itself & passed it to them.

@@SenseiThat in his own way, macht is probably the only demon shown in the entire story that is closest to being human, he wanted peace & even trained human mages *but he also brutally murdered thousands & tortured hundreds for the sake of wanting to understand humans*

Fern means Distance. She is a sniper mage, she can kill anyone without enemy realizing it... For her detection and stealth skill and casting spell so fast and a very long range attack even Frieren can't do that. It will makes Fern untouchable... This is her true power by the way. Killing enemy in distance named Fern...

for the main characters at least, their names come from their personality. Frieren means something like cold, himmel means heaven, heiter means jolly or happy, eisen means iron which kinda describes him since a large part of his persona is his durability, plus he's a dwarf. So fern being named distant/far is usually interpreted as her personality. If anything she's known for her speed in the series. She only snipes someone twice in the series. Or maybe not cause as I'm typing this I remembered that in her introduction the first thing she's trying to do it hit a rock far away.

Her spell travel maybe like a speed of light(maybe Frieren can't do it, because she already mention it already in anime) it is so fast that even a demon that is very good in detecting mana can't detect it and die in an instant. Quick side note, all of the characters in the series are named after german verbs and nouns. Which should display a little bit of their character archetype. Frieren for example means freeze. Talking about her cold personality. Lügner means liar hes a good liar after all Denken means thinking. Stark means strong. Aura not only a german noun but obviously talking about her ability. Himmel means sky (his hair and his character reflect this) Flamme means flame (her hair and character) Übel means bad (shes a bad girl after all) Heiter means either cheerful or bright Draht means wire (his ability is a wire) Eisen means iron (he is built like iron anyway) Kanne means can but in the context of this rather should be taken as watering can (shes a water mage after all) Kraft means power (this guy is a good magician and also a good fighter, so it fits) Laufen means walking (which her ability does really fast) Lawine means avalanche (do I even need to explain this) Lecker means delicious ( hes a cook ) Just to name a few.

@@samkorican1128 slight anti correction. This heavily depends on who you ask. But you are right it's not really "walking". The english language doesn't have a word for laufen, so it translates to both walking and running. If we were to say it correctly it would mean something like "fast walking".

honestly her spell kind of already does what dismantle does. Dismantle is basicly a invisible cut through space. In order to cut something you would need to move through it and to slice with her blade she would need to move it through space. Thus she can already cut through space because she does it unknowingly all the timd.

In the manga he kinda make a bouquet out of thin air and in the anime he uses a type of flower bed magic on a tinier scale than Frieren and Flamme. So he should be able to learn Flamme spell no problem

Its not that Serie can't defeat demon king, she just can't imagine she living in peaceful world but just because she dont want that, she dont prevent other from killing demon king which is a good thing Frieren is far weaker than Serie but she and her hero party still defeat the demon king. Flamme said she and Serie couldn't defeat the Demon King but only peaceful mages like Frieren. This hints so many speculations, but still speculations. I suppose it is too simple to think Serie and Flamme do not want to kill him and just let him live, especially Flamme. There must be something special about him that yet to be revealed. He is the Demon King after all.

In the end, it's about the mindset of the mages. Serie is a mage of war, she could start and win wars, but she could not finishes it. Flamme was a mage of development, she could create massive advancement in human society at large to *help* fighting the destruction, but not stopping the source of destruction. While Frieren is a mage of peace, she may not help the development and advancement of society, nor she wins large scale war, but if it's for peace she would definitely finishes it.

Excellent list! I initially thought that Fern at number 8 was too low, but your further discussion about that convinced me that at 18 years of age, Fern still has much to learn, and probably will continue to grow. Another interesting fan theory discussion is who the Demon King was. Being over 1000 years old, that would almost have to be an Elf who at this point in the story, are the only beings to live that long. Great and fun list.

Ehre weakness is that she's not very tactical and quite wasteful with her mana. Look at her battle with Fern: She fought from the sky, requiring constant defensive spells to protect herself from Fern's ZoltraAK-47 because she didn't have any cover. Both the Flight spell and Standard Defensive Magic are noted to be very mana thirsty spells. The moment she improves her tactical instincts, her ability and confidence will skyrocket.

I just want Sein to meet Methode. Fern can easily lie in a battle, her statement to Ehre could be just a lie especially when Fern, is like Frieren, is constantly restraining her mana. 36:14 Frieren would've detected Solitar too if she's not busy analyzing Macht's memory.

very good list. i agree with all the placements. denken really grew on me throughout the story. the arc with macht is probably the best in the manga so far. i enjoyed learning denken's backstory even though it was very heartbreaking. i really hope we get to see more of the other mages from the exam in the next arcs.

Just felt the need to say that just seeing someone cast a spell does not mean that it's their specialty. For instance Laufen using Jilwer does not mean it's anything more than a spell in her arsenal. I distinctly recall her using a different spell in the second test.

I think Ehre's biggest thing is a naturally high mana capacity. With her having more mana than Wirbel. But, she doesn't have his experience or tactical skill. Plus, Wirbel is quite a bit older than her probably by about a decade.

14:25 Metalturgy... its also how he can form hardened earth that would normally be easy to break if not enhanced by that magic...

If Ubel learns the clone ability she will be much, much stronger... imagine an army that can bind you in place and that can cut trough anything while the original body is somewhere else. Quite possibly she can cut Serie too... judging by the look she gives her at the exam. The treatment Ubel got was pretty much "I know what you are, just go away"

You took that scene the wrong way, she can't cut serie that should be pretty obvious lol. Serie passed her because like everyone else she showed no fear and etc. On top of that ubel can't through anything. Plus serie would know where she is lol.

Frieren is such a good anime about magic/mages because the series' concept of magic, or their magic system, is so complex yet so simple. Yubel is so strong against Sense because of her imagination/visualization against literally hair; however, she probably can't beat Denken (assumption) due to his magic prowess. It's really difficult to rank them just based on strength or ability

My theory on why Methode can use priest magic is her having the "Blessing of the Goddess" as they call it, but also having talent as a mage. I see it like someone having a great talent for music and painting, it's rare and unless you are talented you won't become equally good at both because of a lack of time, but it's not impossible. This remains a theory, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was possible for characters in Frieren to "multiclass", since Macht is a mage, but he might as well be classified as a warrior with how strong and skilled he is with a sword.

ohhh so that's why Serie didn't said anything to Ubel. She knew that witch would try stealing all her knowledge of spells. Damn.

I think people really do underestimate Méthode and may see it strange her higher than Fern. But I too did notice how she handled Fern’s clone, didn’t seem to have damage, and even detected her presence. You sort of just see her standing there in the anime without realizing she was likely about to beat Fern’s clone-which just shows how insane she is!

Serie is so old that even Macht is too young to remember the crippling terror she brought on demons during the mythical era. Its not an exageration to think she is probably the actual mage who killed the most demon in history. So long ago though no one remember it except her.

Serie is probably the strongest in the entire verse. She was there in the mythical era and probably right there when the goddess was creating the world. She's just bored out of her mind at this point.

36:30 You say that Fern was able to detect Solitär’s appearance that even Frieren was unable to do. Note that it wasn’t her appearance but her burst of mana over the barrier holding Macht to begin analyzing it. And Frieren was otherwise occupied as she had just began analyzing Macht’s magic to undo it.

Erhe has a vast mana pool. She just lacks battle exp

its pretty hilarious that this was basically just youngest to oldest but the middle and young adults duking it out. but it goes to show that in the world of frieren, wisdom and knowledge is what gives you advantage

Also: considering how they're building Fern (and Stark, too, actually), I wouldn't be surprised if she will end up as the new strongest human mage ever. Even if humanity might never know.

Strongest assassin mage

The reason the proctor for the second class exam died is because of his magic which takes in the form of a cloak.. Even we can imagine a scissor cutting through cloth/cloak right?! That is also why Übel can defeat Sense because she can easily imagine scissors cutting the long hair of Sense.. It's like common sense but it's not really common, you know.. 😅

Übel also trivializes the cloth. For her, all clothing made of fabrics therefore can be cut, despite IRL different clothing have different durability to cuts due to their fabrics and build. Denim pants and Cargo's are heavier and more durable than Dress' or Cotton's.

I think the comments about Ehre’s attacks being ‘easy’ to dodge and Fern breaking her barriers down easily aren’t entirely fair. Fern is clearly leagues above her, so Ehre’s own power level could very well be very good compared to most mages. She was just matched against someone unfortunate - kind of like how Frieren easily beats Denken, but if another within his same power bracket were to fight him, he would be a lot more fearsome. A kind of similar story with Edel. Her magic is very powerful in concept, but we haven’t seen her fight against someone where her power is useful. So she is more situational.

abt mana conceilment and detection from fern. her detection is prob one of the highest or the highest on the level of the demon king and prob serie. but her conceilment is kinda "lacking" in comparison cuz demons that are around the level of the seven sages are able to detect her conceilment but aren't able to detect frierens.

I think it's the opposite. Fern is incredibly good at concealment. hence why even when she was just a child, Frieren said she was hard to find. It's just that she is not at the level of the great demons so she will still be detected, but her concealment still is superior to her detection.

@@ardel-4964 minor spoiler Fern conceilment is good but will never be as good as serie or frieren due to being a human and not having the time to confirm it this is confirmed with the battle against soltair who is on par with frieren in terms of power. She also stated that she can detect ferns conceilment and later on while battling frieren she couldn't detect hers but she did know frieren is doing it cuz she studied the fight with aura

@@alexsjarif spoilers I also want to note that Serie's mana concealment is far, far above Frieren's. In Chapter 83, Frieren herself says that even she cannot deceive Macht's mana detection inside the golden city, but Serie herself was able to literally touch Macht's back without him noticing. It's understandable why he was so spooked.

@@StevenNinjaZ spoiler Yeah i know what u mean but thats not really all there is to it frieren herself can also surpress her mana for a short while we've seen fern doing it a multiple times ones with denken and with lugner in a way they weren't able to sense her. And yeah serie is obv much better in prob all aspect in battle

We'll probably get to see Serie in action in the current arc of the manga as there's people after her life

Lawin and Kanne I think should be at the bottom tbh. They got carried through every round of the test and are all around inexperienced. Plus their power is very situational as mentioned. Edel might not be great in combat, but she should still be able to beat Lawin and Kanne as long as it's not raining. Plus most of the power they do show is actually just how well they work with each other. Edel couldn't become a first class mage because of her lack of combat ability. Her skills lie elsewhere. Lawin and Kanne didn't become first class mages because of a lack within their main skill set, which they are somewhat aware of, preventing them from considering it possible. I would probably even put Laufen above them, seeing as the power they do show is simply as a result of them working together, while Laufen's ability was even able to evade Frieren's notice the first time she used it.

Kanne should carry a big bottle of water like Gaara carries a pot of sand 😂

Personally, I'd consider Fern's poker face to be a major asset in battle

I still felt sorry for Kanne & Lawine not passing. They did so well in the first test. I hope they make it next time

It's actually not a cap for Wirbel to beat Fern during the first stage of the mage exam. Wirbel's binding spell also relies in the element of surprise. If Wirbel fought Fern instead or bind her from the get go in their surprise attack she will surely be dead but he didn't do that during the surprise attack because he was a softy and just wants to take the Stille from them without killing anyone. If you doubt Wirbel could do that? Then just watch the episode where Wirbel's clone bind Ehre from a distance. Fern and his party will surely be annihilated considering Wirbel's teammates is strong offensive magic users and they didn't even fire any spell that time only Wirbel during the surprise attack. You could even see Wirbel attack Fern first showing he had good judgement, afterall Fern was the first one to react when Wirbel started to shoot them and cast defensive magic to both Lahn and Wirbel, if he binded her that time and attack it's already game over for the them. (Fern wouldn't be able to move and Lahn & Ubel will also taken out given how late they react, they would've been injured for sure.) Fern's team was really lucky Wirbel is not ruthless despite the vibes he had on his appearance.

Denken: My fist has zero manacost

I believe Serie could've defeated the demon king, but she says her and Flamme didn't do it because they couldn't imagine a peaceful world, meaning they lived for violence in a sense, they didn't think of forming a party to get to the demon king or planning a way to kill him nor did they seem that interested in doing it, 1v1 I'm sure they could've beat the demon king but they way to get to him requires planning and a well balanced team which they didn't get.

Exactly, but also wasn't it directly stated that wirbel is was the strongest second class mage which puts him above denken yet his not even in top 10 ?

@@Anne-mn9fs tbf that's just hearsay. We have actual feats for Denken so we can't really compare them fairly. We haven't seen feats from Wirbel yet that would imply he could solo a Sage of Destruction like Denken can.

It's kinda like (for example) the angels in dbs, almost none of them have feats but we still rank them above the likes of vegeta

To be fair Frieren was kinda busy deciphering 100 years worth of memories at the time of Solitar at the barrier. It is literally why she chose that time to do it.

No sadly, the only feat we saw from her is from the Second Exam only and it's as a clone. But the current ongoing arc in the manga will probably show us on how strong she is in a real fights since she is involved in that arc.

If you haven't, I'd recommend you to read where the anime left off (It's Ch. 58) MANGA SPOILERS: Like I've said before, "Probably" we will see a real combat from Sense in the current arc (Ch. 126 & 127). Because, The current arc is about Sense, Falsch, Land, Ubel & Frieren with her party joining on a mission to protect Serie's life from the empire, because the empire is on a mission to Assassinate Serie.

Knowing German makes the whole show a lot more fun. All the names are fitting what is unusual. Japanese use German words more frequently than most other Non-german speakers but the German language is pretty complicated what makes using it correctly very tricky. In general the pronunciation was great or at least fine but Jubel is not Uebel/Übel. Jubel means cheer or celebration while uebel means vile or evil. I was wondering who you were talking about till I saw the spelling. The Japanese voice actors actually have on point pronunciation of all names what really surprised me. So if you want to know what things are called watch the subbed version. I have not watched the dub so I cannot tell you how good the English pronunciation of the German words is. On a side note. The spells are the one thing not using German words but locations and every single character is named after a German word that describes them fairly well.
