Urban Exploration: Abandoned French chateau of a taxidermist (English, German and Portuguese subtitles are available!) Episode #168
Somewhere in France, we found an old house frozen for 100 years now, with the vintage furnishings still left inside. Today, the former home of a taxidermist resembles a cabinet of horror - with deceased animals everywhere that were turned into decorations ages ago. In this video, in a group of four, we set out to learn the story of this place. Everywhere in the rural areas of France, there are these derelict châteaux - small castle-like estates that were once homes of the wealthy. But wealth is only temporary, and this is what remains: A time capsule that allows us to see firsthand how people were living their lives 100 years ago. In today's episode, we are reading letters from the era of World War One. We are showcasing valuable furniture and old items you can normally only find in museums. And we are trying to unveil the story of the last occupants who simply left the chateau long ago. Join our travel back in time! #urbex #abandonedplaces #bwturbex

The past four weeks, we spent in France - with exploring abandoned places half of the time. We just came back to cold and windy Germany, but brought 15+ new episodes for the channel! This is the first video of our France adventure. Let us know what you think about it! These last few days, we were making travel plans for the summer, and we really want to do a road trip to Eastern Europe and see the ruins of the USSR. At the moment, many borders are closed, but if travel restrictions get lifted we will definitely do a long summer road trip - all the way to Georgia by car.

15:07 The bottom left page of the passport show that she had 11 children. At the time, they have flew away from the war.. escaping forced army enrolment.. could be one reason why they never came back. After the first world war, coming back from a far away country is not easy.. without the certainty of having other siblings back home, the possibility of facing justice.. it's easier to just let it go.. It's sad but her kids probably got a better live that way..

At 18:53 of the French Castle Abandoned since WWI, I wanted to share with you that the saddle you found is not a cattle roping saddle. It is a ladies sidesaddle. Those horns on the top of it are designed for the left foot to sit in the stirrup and the lower horn sits atop the left thigh. The right leg pinches that horn between the two thighs and that second horn sits atop the right leg to give it a little security. You’ll notice the seat of the saddle is very broad. It makes it possible for the lady to sit her butt and much of her upper legs well across the horse’s back. If it were more narrow, she’d have more trouble balancing up there. It sounds very precarious but clamping that horn between your knees gives you quite a lot of security. Women today still compete in sidesaddle classes in horse shows but these shows are usually the most exclusive of shows. The habits they wear and the saddles are usually vintage. That saddle you found was especially grand. The tooling (carving) on it was very ornate and would only have been made for someone very wealthy. It was lovely to see. This one reminds me much of the one you found: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidesaddle#/media/File%3ADamensattel.jpg

Heartbreaking is the word that came to me the strongest. I know urban exploration is to follow the 'take only photo's, leave only footprints' code but in this instance I just couldn't. The sad thing is that any currently living heirs of the last occupant probably don't even know about the house at this point. At best I think it would be family lore 'you're great, great grandparents lived in a big house in France years ago'.

It makes me think that the heirs didn’t have happy memories in the home. When there were so many beds and you think many children/heirs...why wouldn’t at least one want to save the home (even if only to sell). It just makes me think that no one felt love there like they wanted or should have so they just moved on and didn’t want to go back and relive the unhappy memories. Makes it all even sadder.

This is very nicely done! I live in France on a barge and there are often old barges that are abandoned - they are interesting also. The life on the river has been dying out now for a long time. Many villages along the canals are dying but so beautiful. You might think of following the canals there is a very rich history of how France built cities like Paris using the system of canals. You wondered why families would not take care of an estate and just leave it; There was a barge I went onto full of a person's life, When I asked why it was left to vandals, they told me it was too expensive for the family. Too much taxes to pay and they left it and everything. The barge was hauled away for the metal. But, there are barges sitting empty with the life of the last owner telling a story!

I must say that this is one of the best urbex videos I have watched. Very well put together and very well presented. It is sad that the owner would allow the contents to rot away. I am sure there are many who would cherish the contents and preserve them for another 100 years. I liked your comment “Time has no mercy”. It reminds me of my 89 year old father when he looks at his watch and says “What’s the enemy?”. Again a great video. Thank you for bringing us along as fellow admirers of history.

Hello gentlemen , I am please to see this view and history of French people. My husband and I visited France in 2018. We traveled from Paris to Normandy on the Seine on a Viking cruise. Although we visited the most iconic destinations in France we would love to return to do more "boots on the ground " exploring . Your channel is my favorite. Regarding family members disregarding the legacy that's been left to them, here in the U.S.A. the same is occurring . Valuables and homestead are quickly turned into cash by a third party and no items of sentimental value is kept. Estate sales, thrift and antique shops are full of personal belongings of a "great generation". No one wants grandma's dishes or grandpa's metals he earned during the war. On my fathers' side of the family we have a designated chronicler and photo collector. This way our descendants (if interested) can learn more about their family other than Ancestry.Com. Last , I believe that tiny letter with the black trim was an announcement of some one's death. Thank you again for your team work.
