These aren't in short supply. Most the ones blown up have been sitting for years with no buyers. Hundreds of thousands at minimum are still available Just in the USA and Canada. Should they all be saved just to rot into the ground?

natoe5 I totally would've reached out if I got to keep the gen set. I only got to keep the engine though.
Detroit Diesels will ALWAYS fire up providing no obvious holes in the side or bent/destroyed internals. Hell, it may just fire with those issues depending on the severity. Might run away, or grenade shortly after, but they don't need much to cheech away. Love Ole 2 stroke Detroit's. Easily one of the best engines ever built.

Same for the 850 Etec Rotax, i got an 8v92 silver turbo out back, 2 strokes are more durable and the detroit with their anti-friction bearings allows them to come online quick.

Wayne just keep doing what you're doing I love your content man you always make me laugh and I always learn something new every time when I watch one of your videos I even learned something about the old two-stroke Detroit engines between the 71 series and the 92 series that was pretty cool to see that 12v71TT generator can't wait to see more content in the future

Love the 2 strokes! I'm a Cat (power generation) guy now but I worked for 10 years for a Kohler dealer, Kohler used a lot of Detroits in the gen sets. I've serviced everything from 4-53's to 20v149's and then the newer series 60's and MTU/Detroits. You are correct about hospitals and critical care these 2 strokes sense power loss and are online in 3-4 seconds. Can't do that with 4 strokes but they still have to meet the 10 second deadline. I would check and see if the start leads from the gen controller are shorted together and trying to start the unit when in auto position. It will typically be only be 2 small gauge wires that normally run to an ATS (automatic transfer switch) for starting but if shorted together it will try to start the unit when in auto.

I worked on those old Detroit 2 cycle diesel genesis at Suffolk county water Authority on Long Island. There is probably nothing major wrong with the generator. Sometimes it’s only a matter of cleaning up the selector switches and flashing the exciter field. Or installing a more modern regulator. These old beasts are very hardy. If it has brushes just spray some contact cleaner on the slip rings as it’s running. If it’s brushless spray cleaner in at the prime mover. I still have books on the alternator.

Drove a 1971 LT9000 Ford oilfield tractor with that engine the 12V71TT in it. Wish I knew where that thing went it was one powerfull truck set up for heavy haul. Had 54000 axles three driven huge winch 13spd with 4spd brownie and a power tower for the winch and a Hercules 4 axle mechanical folding neck trailer. At the time 1972 there were no other trucks that could stay with you. With the doulble over in the brownie it was good for 100 plus even with 411 axles. Only bad thing about it was the straight stacks after making a 10 hour run you were deaf unless you wore ear muffs
Dude, that reminds me of a woodruff governor on that engine. My first day on the mechanic job, after my years working offshore at McDermott. I was sent to tune up one just like that since it would not load bank . When I got done, that thing was walking the dog, carrying the load with two mufflers on fire. @@Ol2Stroker I've seen lots of wore out governors, but I've never come across one of those with a malfunction that a little adjustment could not cure. My Dad got a 40ft. wooden shrimp lugger from my Uncle once. That boat had a 271 on a 4:1 marine gear. It was a nice cypress hull. He could catch a lot of shrimp with that rig.
