Thank you sir
Next time you use cable for damascus, simply use the stick welder to melt/cut through the cable at the length you want. This will not only accomplish cutting it, but it will weld the end in the same action without having to fuss around at the vise while the strands try to separate.

Thanks! I like this method the best, I think. Don't even worry about trying to clean it, just heat it up, knock out the crud, and go from there. Somebody on the channel here gave me the tip. Also, I learned that some manufacturers actually puts asphalt in the cable to hold the grease in, so cleaning it is tough.
dude the end with that giant ring on it would be neat to forge weld then grind some cross hatching into. This one is your eureka moment attempt. Everything went smooth as butter. Also I'm super jelly of that badass swage block lol

One day take slices of the cable and layer that horizontal. It looks like a flower 🌸 blossom and that would look nice down the center of a layer blade. Might have to make a canister to start it but it would look awesome! Idea submission complete- I Silver Smith but secretly I love black smithing!

Stay away from anything galvanized, otherwise figure out what you can. Cable is usually classified as improved plow steel, extra improved, and extra extra improved I believe. The xximproved is basically 1095 with a tiny bit of chromium. How you will know what is is, is another story. I'd just start trying a piece and see how it acts.
