    Next time you use cable for damascus, simply use the stick welder to melt/cut through the cable at the length you want. This will not only accomplish cutting it, but it will weld the end in the same action without having to fuss around at the vise while the strands try to separate.

    Thanks! I like this method the best, I think. Don't even worry about trying to clean it, just heat it up, knock out the crud, and go from there. Somebody on the channel here gave me the tip. Also, I learned that some manufacturers actually puts asphalt in the cable to hold the grease in, so cleaning it is tough.

    Can you make a blade from bisalloy 80 to see if it works.

  • @FireCreekForge

    @FireCreekForge

    I'm sure you could make a blade from that, but it's a low carbon steel so wouldn't provide very good characteristics for a knife.

    @@systemsrenegade9888 to add any relevant amount of carbon you have to do a process known as carburizing which is basically soaking iron in carbon (charcoal) at about 1800F in a sealed container all day. Depending on how you do it, you can get a thin layer of high carbon steel with this process.

    Interesting you ask that as I picked one up from harbor freight just the other day and it works really good for me. I don't have a huge beard but it's enough for a gas mask to not seal properly. That being said I used my respirator to pick up some VERY stinky dog poop in my garage. I didn't smell a thing! So it was very effective for me.
