Forest Service Sent Me Angry Letter!

Forest service sent me an angry letter saying I had to fix a bunch of stuff on the property around my cabin but the only way to access the backcountry cabin this time of year is by ATV.

As a certified propane technician, you have 2 options. Get a certified letter from your propane supplier stating that the 2nd tank is needed for btu capacity of cabin and hand that to forest department. Or notify forest department that tank will be removed when empty and get a drift hose from propane company to tie the tanks together. Once tanks empty it will slide on the snow just fine without a sled or anything. We do it all the time in winter

    (a) the cabin isn't heated by gas. (b) FS doesn't care. you get one tank. (it's in a document nobody bothers to read.) Also, the building itself is made of wood. That's as much a fire hazard as the pile of fire wood.

I like that the FS is concerned about fire hazards going into winter, when that pile will be covered by 5' of snow in no time, and forest fires are non-existent. I know Dave is being nice, but spending time on BS like this is why they're closing campgrounds that people would use in the off season "because they don't have time to patrol". The rangers are often nice fellas, but their directors are a bunch of useless bureaucrats.

I used to work for the Forest Service. You are correct about leadership being the problem. There are foolish policies they try to implement from Washington meant for all, but they don't work for every different type of landscape and region. Then you have a WHOLE BUNCH of middle-management people who are more and more young college grads who are snarky, know-it-all overbearing tree huggers who couldn't even install a fence post to save their lives. These people are telling the real workers-the productive ones-what to do and it's often ridiculous. They also come out into the field and tell some old ranch hand, a man like this fellow HeavyD, or other common sense land owners what they are going to do with their own land. And they do it without any sense of charisma, common sense or kindness. Obnoxious and insistent. They make it hard on the folks like me who tried to actually serve the people and make things better. They have forgotten it is the Forest SERVICE. The point is-not all of them are bad.

Yea that was all absurd. I could maybe understand the dumb rope swing as they could say and animal could get trapped in it but the rest is BS. The forest is full of firewood so who cares about a stack of it near a cabin. The LP tank certainly posed more of a risk moving it than letting it there. They could have easily given a season or two to finish it up and then remove it.

Forest service bureaucrats. Can't have a swing, that's a hazard. *rolls eyes* The firewood buried under snow is a hazard, you have to move it. *sigh* You can't have two tanks, you have to immediately move one of those or be fined. So, can I use a truck? Nope. So, I have to use a 4 wheeler or snowmobile, go up a mountain, attach this tank full of fuel, and then drag it down the mountain because it's a hazard? Yes. And dragging it down the mountain isn't a hazard? Don't ask questions, just do as you're told!

Personally I would have written them back a kind letter stating you moved the wood and the strap, and you will remove the tank before next fire season. Then just use up as much propane in the backup system you can through your visits in the winter, and remove it when you could get a truck up.

Not only do the tires get better grip by letting the air out but flotation increases incredible. We here is Iceland travel the mountains in trucks, vans and other 4x4 vehicles. But letting the air out of the tires without special rims, like you said, is not a good idea. We run our trucks from 10 down to zero psi in heavy snow. So much fun seeing how much these vehicles on 36-54 inch tires are capable.

I worked for a propane company for 5 years. If they tank is full it’s going to be heavy. I see it’s only a 120 so it shouldn’t be too bad even full. We needed a boom truck to move them. They could have let you empty it first. If your using that for heat and appliances you’ll need at least a 1,000. Anyway I can’t stop watching you guys. Great content and I look forward to the next episode. I also would like to win something from you guys. Even a trip out there to hang for a couple days would be cool. 😎👍🏼
