Flying: Career paths. Captain Peter Ogertschnigg

Hello again and how do you do? In the next few months or so, I’ll be doing some short interviews of pilots/engineers/mechanics and other aviation individuals focusing on career paths they took in their selected disciplines. The sim is to encourage and give insight to the various segments within aviation. There’s a lot to choose from. Today I’m talking to Captain Peter Orgertschnigg, a friend I worked with for many years on the B747. Peter was also a senior training captain on the B747 before he returned to his country. There are several paths to becoming a pilot one of which is via the airforce. The airforce is a good path as you get trained well without a big financial burden. When you complete your contract period you can leave and join the airlines if you wish with good experience and respect for serving your country too. Do- consider using this route seriously. Have a listen to Captain Peter.O. On his path.
Hope you like it- ‘Chi Di Gin! Later!✈️✈️✈️✈️

Cathay definitely in need of more B777 crew these days! Going via the Air Force pathway is an option for some depending on the countries where they live.

Thanks for the video, Skipper. The Air Force is a great place to start one's flying career. However, compared to Europe, Africa and Asia, we do not have many ex-Air Force pilots flying for civilian operators in Sub-Saharan Africa. Could anyone explain why?

I can't think of another civil profession that is so demanding in its requirement for constant, demonstrated proof of competence, both in health and proficiency. Fail either one and it's - "see you LATER"

Of course medical standards are fairly high for airline pilots. However, failing a sim check will just result in extra training. It's what we are prepared for from Day 1 of our training in a small Cessna. People fail checkrides for their private, commercial etc.

I think the role of a Police Officer, certainly in the UK is very mentally demanding as well. You have to have a high level of knowledge of the powers they can use and how to deal with such a range of differing scenarios, whereas an airline pilot is very much regimented and procedure based…that is of course not to say that they aren’t quick thinkers as well and know exactly what to do in an emergency before even looking at the QRH
