I took my first flying lesson at 40 and became an FO at 46. I then flew commercially for 15 years before hanging up my headset at 63 to move on to another career.

Congratulation! I think thats the right way to never give up. Unindependent what maybe other people say. Personaly I think not the age is a limit. The limit is the reason. I collect every Air accident Investigation and I have readen many of them were carlessness. Acaused from young and old peoples. Give "save flying" a change. It's all in your mind.😊

Well, as a 53yo male here in Australia, literally about to fly over to the US on Monday for flight training, I’m pleased I saw this video. Of course, I’ve done much research about prospects, pros and cons…etc, but every video/discussion I here from professional pilots essentially giving the advice as noted in this video, reinforces my decision to chase my dream of flying for a living. I did actually start my flying a long time ago (mid 90’s), but then I got a home loan, and could no longer afford to fly. So career 2.0, here I come…hopefully 😉

This guy is smart! In Australia you pay thru the nose and won’t graduate with enough hours to get a job. In the USA for $80k you can expect to get close to 1000hrs or higher for what in Australia you will only get 250hrs.

Costs vary, but it’s generally cheaper there, and far more opportunities available if training progresses appropriately…I suspect economies of scale is a major factor; the aviation sector is just so big over there.

I am currently doing my EASA ATPL. I have seen numerous guys at the exams well above the age of 40, sometimes 50, and that is at Austro Control. One of my flight instructors back when i did my PPL just turned 50 years old. He recently got a position as an FO on A320 for a Romanian airline. I am just 20 years old, but what i am trying to tell you is that there are a lot of people who are a tad older and still got to achieve their dreams. If you really want to become a pilot, i can recommend you to try it, there are some people who did it and so there is a chance you can as well. I hope this gives all you guys who ask this age question a small motivation boost. See you in the skies.

You are not too old. I am 70 and have not flown for over 30 years (life got in the way). i am just getting back into it and with all the new stuff, it is like just starting over. It is still exciting.. Just go to your local airport and take an “intro” flight. I will bet you will be hooked.

Exactly! Took me 32 years to get there, but I never gave up my childhood dream to become a pilot. 👌🏾 Got my PPL 25 years ago and it was the best thing I've ever done!

In my 52 years in the Corporate world, maturity is one of the things I looked for in those applying for employment. Mature people tend to take a job and stick to it, while younger people often take a job till something better comes along. I'm sure that is a lot more prevalent in regional airlines where pilots are trying to build hours and experience so they can go to the majors. A lot of times older workers have found themselves back in the job pool because of mergers, layoffs, or some off the wall excuse for them to hire someone younger with a lower salary. Keep up the good work explaining your profession in a way we can all understand.

I enlisted in the US Air Force at 35, no prior military service. Won’t give up on chasing the dream of becoming a pilot!

You definitely won't be a USAF pilot in the USAF as an enlisted person. When I was in, the USAF did have Aero Clubs. You can get your private certificate thru them if they still exist.

I'm 20.. becoming a pilot has been my dream since I was like 4. Unfortunately my parents could not afford flight training as it is way too expensive. Even the cadet pilot programs in my country are not paid for by the airlines. So I am now reluctantly taking a degree in university in hopes to save up to be a pilot one day. I'll always be dreaming of one day flying passengers in an A320 or A330 :')

You're gonna be absolutely fine buddo... Dont see your reluctantcy towards a degree as a setback or something that is keeping you from your dream... Focus on yourself and your degree because it's your journey at your own pace! See a degree as a positive and a stepping stone to where you want to be one day. My parents could also not afford flightschool and I myself had to work jobs I hated and got my degree 2 years ago. After doing all that, I have finally reached a point where I started flight training and now more than ever I look forward to leaving my job for a career in aviation within the next few years! The point Im trying to make is - you're obviously doing this by yourself (no financial aids from parents, no cadet programs or whatever) so be patient with yourself on this journey and chip away at this big ambitious dream day by day!!!

You have so much time to get it done, you'll be just fine. Just make sure you go get the required aviation medical certificate needed to be a commercial pilot in your country before you go out and plan to do everything. No point in pursuing it if you happen to have something that disqualifies you. Make sure you talk to as many pilots about the medical and the industry in your country.

Well done, I did a degree in Computer Science, worked as a programmer and achieved my PPL (1994), worked hard and saved money, do not spend money on houses, cars or women ( you can still date girls/boys etc try and avoid having children). By 1998 I had quit my job and trained as flight instructor. By mid year 2000, offered job as FO on BAE 146 airliner (4 engine jet!). Started as new FO in 2001 ( I was now 31) moved to B777 by 2004 (had a great time all over the world), moved A320 end of 2011, command on A320 in 2014, Now command A350 since 2023. I will stay on this until I retire. If you really want it, you can do it. Good luck.

Me too but now im 39. Don’t give up on it. I went to university then i got a engineering job. Things were good and bad over my career. In recent years i went freelance to work on a side business but also contract as in the engineering sector im in there is a big shortage which is favourable. This move has allowed me to charge more for my time and now i can afford flight training. The side business i started is in my industry and i have rolled it back and outsourced to almost like an investment with little time needed on it so i should be able to have enough money to train and support myself now. Get your university course done and work in a sector and save but also! Learn to invest too and look for opportunities to invest or market gaps too. Im not meaning quick money but long term so your savings work hard for you too.

Let's push till we get there....I'm 26. Was told by my sponsor that I couldn't become a pilot just after completing high school cause it's like being a "driver" So a "better" career was picked for me😪 I'm currently saving up for Air School. All I know is, one day I'll be a happy driver❤

For Cathay (COS99) retirement age was 55, for various reasons this was pushed out to 65. Anyone starting out in aviation later on in their life is going to struggle to make it to the left seat, 40 sure, 50 really starting to push it although not everyone wants that left seat. Another factor with age is your health, you can be super fit and still end up losing your medical cert for reasons beyond your control, aviation is expensive to get into so there's risk involved, and with age comes higher risk.

I’m a retired airline pilot and was a training captain for most of my career. Can a person become a pilot later in life? The answer is yes. However, the best pilots are experienced ones who’ve flown for decades during which they developed and honed their skills and instincts to a fine edge. The later in life one becomes a pilot the less time they have to undergo this process. I’ve found that the best captains are those that have had decades of experience. Those that became pilots later in life are at best competent but almost always are missing some key components that the more experienced captain can bring to the job. I think this is true in any profession.

You have the right spirit and attitude. When/IF you resume lessons, try everything possible to complete them this time. I was 32 when I started in 1998 (had a wife and small kids), so the family came first! However, I did everything possible to finish and get my PPL. Went into a little debt as well (not advising you to), but I was deternmined to finish what I started lol. Fortunately, I had and still have a succesful electrical career, and my salary steadily increased over the years. It's an expensive endeavor to pursue, especially without any extra funding, military, etc. So, my advice to you is, make sure you have the funds/means to complete it, so that you don't disappoint yourself by starting again only to have to drop out again. The drop out rate of student pilots due to the cost is staggering! Hats off to you for even trying! 👍🏾

Aviation is not a profession, it's a devotion. I love aviation and I never heard a pilot saying that he flys just because of the pay. Unfortunately there are some that get into the field that are not meant for them. But, overall, aviation is something magic where man and machine become one. And yet, when you do what you really like, and then you don't work anymore! You do it for the pleasure.

You're a star, it's worth adding anyone in that group to look deep into his/her mental and physical health, a major point.

Thank you for your suggestions, Captain Obet. I am a Hongkonger living in foreign country. I want to be an airline pilot. However, I need to get my citizenship before applying cadet program (in any airlines, no need to be Cathay Pacific) because I need a foreign passport for family reasons. Otherwise, I would have applied Cathay Pacific Cadet Program in 2023. At this moment, I have a good prospect in my current job and living environment. It is the most difficult thing I need to persuade my parents to support my plan. Now I regulary review the textbooks, listen ATC and keep in touch with my pilot friends . Once I am ready, I will submit my application.

Best wishes! I was your age in 1998 when I started and got my PPL. I was already at the top of my career as an Industrial Electrician (working at an airport at that). I had a wife and small kids, so unlike you, I wasn't even considering quitting my job for a career change lol. However, the main thing is that I did it (fulfilled my childhood dream). I said to myself and my wife....it's either now or never (as I saw the years going by without me doing anything about it 😂 BEST THING I'VE EVER DONE!

I took 10 years to finish my pilot training on my own experiences and here I’m aging 40 with decent job and income, but I’m willing to give all just to be in the cockpit. I’m full of confidence that soon I’ll get the opportunity to do full time job pilot as I’m willing to work in any pilot jobs regardless if it’s airline, charter or what so ever as long it will be in the cockpit. I have been working Line maintenance in haeco more than 10 years. My daily job is to inspect passenger aircraft. It is a pity that I did not have the opportunity to meet you.🥰😃

I finished all my training at 35 … I’m now 37 and still haven’t been able to get work out of it, because even with a multi engine command instrument rating nobody would take me on as even after spending $130k for a diploma and degree in Australia - you only get 250hrs .. companies won’t look at your resume unless you have 1000hrs minimum. My advice to anyone looking to start an aviation career is unless you get a program with close to 1000hrs for the $100k price and ATPLs included … move along!

I think you should look into the bush flying outfits to gain your flying time. There are a number in Australia if that is where you are. Another route is to take up an instructor job but first getting instructor rating( money is not great), but a good way to gain experience

I don't think this problem is as straightforward as you necessarily make it out to me . I've heard of pilots with around 200 hours struggling to find jobs but for 2 years straight? At that point generally it's an issue with the pilot, usually to do with not willing to accept certain kinds of jobs that they find unattractive or move out to remote locations. Getting a flight instructor rating takes a couple of months and there are so many positions available that you have to try to not get hired as an instructor. Getting 1000 hours with an ATPL for 100k is just not going to happen. Even then, the kind of flying you do matters very much. Airlines love to see turbine and multi-IFR time.

The points he makes are valid and spot on. Its really important to have the appropriate motivation if you decide to pursue this at an older age. I have some practical experience to share as a decades long professional airline pilot who has been a Check Airman, issued type ratings at the airline level, acted as Standards Captain and participated in the interview process. Let me start by saying that I fully support pursuing it as an older person. If its something that you have always wanted to do and you are passionate about it, this will of course be an aid to success. You need to be aware that there is truth to the saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” This is simply the reality of our abilities as we age. All of us decline. We just do. Its our human condition. It happens to each of us at different rates! It has been my experience that this can be observable in older individuals learning how to fly. It even applies to people who haven’t flown in many years-decades even-who re-enter the field. I have seen this personally quite a few times. Please let me clarify something. There is “learning to fly” and then there is “becoming an airline pilot”. These are 2 different things with 2 different standards. Most people, but not all, have the ability to “learn how to fly.” The basics. The mechanics of control manipulation. How to talk on the radio. These types of things. In my opinion, thats the easy part. You must be able to accomplish this but don’t take it for granted as an older person. I say this from experience! A quick example: many years ago my airline transitioned from airplanes without Flight Management Systems (computer input) to those with said systems. Many pilots with vast amounts of experience flying heavy airliners transitioned to these new airplanes. The basics were the same-pull up you go up, push down you go down. No problem. Its the same in both airplanes. The computer interface wasn’t the same. Most successfully transitioned. Some did not. The majority of those who weren’t successful were older. These dogs couldn’t learn new tricks well enough to perform the job appropriately. There are several qualities in my opinion that a pilot needs to have that are more important than the basic raw skills involved with mechanical control manipulation. You need to have good judgement, you need to be able to manage multiple things at the same time and you must be able to make decisions. Don’t take these 3 things lightly! Especially as an older person, it would be wise to do some honest self introspection. A person may be able to “learn how to fly” and get a pilot’s license without needing to demonstrate a “higher” level of these things. That changes at the airline level. Significantly. The standard is higher. I realize this part will be difficult to see looking from the outside in but it is very real. All this to say that as an older person or as a career changer it might be wise to go and get a basic pilot’s license and see how it goes! Self evaluate as you proceed. Hopefully, this helps to shed some light on the process. And make no mistake it is a lengthy expensive time consuming process! By all means pursue your dreams! If you can, find someone who is intimately involved in airline level training and checking and sit down with them face to face about all of this. Probably not many have the opportunity to take advantage of this but if it comes along take it. Good luck!

You can fly Part 135 doing cargo and shuttling, taxing with no mandatory retirement at 65. However, sometimes the 1st Class Medical gets harder to pass as you get older.

Thank you Captain Obet. Here where I live most of the academy which provides cadet pilot programme have a certain age limit. You cannot join if you are 32+ and in some aviation academy age limit is 17 to 25. Be hopeful and give your best! You'll be on that seat one day!

He is one of those who survived it. As he is now over 80 years old, what would he say? Yes, he still flies his ultra lights and light aircrafts with a maximum of one passenger, meanwhile. Everything else is too much chatter in the cabin, as he told me. What would he say here now? It's never too late and rarely too early! Always have a good flight and the best weather conditions. I have always wanted to fly and did a bit toward my PPL in my late teens, I'm 30 now and I've just noticed that the Royal Australian Airforce has lifted its maximum age on entry of 28.5 years to 45 years of age. Its seriously got me contemplating giving it a shot. I ended up starting a small family in my early 20s so I gave up a lot of dreams. But the situation is different now and I would have the time to brush up on the education prerequisites. My only worry is getting back into a study mindset, being social again and becoming an integral part of a team as post covid lockdowns I feel I've become quite reserved. Thanks for this video sir, it is highly motivating.

Seneca college said that if your older then 22 years of age for their pilot course then don't bother applying . ✈️ Airlines like to hire Military pilots .

I hate the term fail. Our lives our learning experiences. You become the best version of yourself through experience. Airline recruiters should note that.

I am a retired rescue diver from the fire department and am intentionally moving forward with flight training at 60 years of age!!! NOTHING IS STOPPING ME FROM REALIZING MY DREAM OF FLYING. In 18 months I will be flying commercially until I turn 65. Who care about left seat / right seat?!?! I WILL BE FLYING!!! By then, I will STILL BE FLYING MYSELF AROUND until I cannot fly any longer! Well i believe you should go after what you want knowing the risk you're about to take. Nothing beats years of experience but passion and love for a discipline also counts. I did my A&P at Embry Riddle in the 90's but kids came along and i couldnt do my flight training. Most pilots do it because they love it however some do it for the money and no longer enjoy what they do and what is more dangerous than an inexperience pilot?? A careless frustrated pilot and yes years are highly important but attitude also is. If you don't mind being FO to someone young enough to be your child and you can take the lower pay scale and if the kids have moved out go for it but leave room for disappointments because airlines want pilots who have years ahead but like i always say, every door doesnt have to open only one

Great advice! Thank you! I’m at the top of my game as a programmer. I was a GPU performance engineer at Apple and a senior graphics programmer at Square Enix (Final Fantasy XV etc.), but my dad worked on airplanes and they’re just in the family blood. I want to fly, and now I can feel certain that my age (42) won’t be a problem, and that I actually have decent chances! My only hurdle is that I am a foreigner living in Japan, so I wonder how hard it is to get a job here. Only one way to find out!

The answer is yes. Learning at a late stage can be dangerous.

Thank you sir, i have always considered age as sn obstacle, although my interest is on flying an helicopter.

I know of an airline pilot with Aer Lingus (Irish) , an A330_300 captain who is also a cardiovascular surgeon . I studied with a pilot (B707) in 1974 who became a gynaecologist and another who obtained his medical degree and decided not for him and became a pilot . At 68 I am afraid too old to leave medicine and sprout wings !! I would just love to computer / simulator train just to prove that I could have done it .

In other words I should take my time get my money up and chase my dreams Inshaa allah then 🤲🏽

I’ve been doing GA flying for over 33 years and am pending for my first airline interview shortly. I just hope that I won’t be preceived as too old for joining the airline flying,

I wouldn’t like living in hotels and out of suitcases all the time, away from my precious family. Nothing is more important than spending time with family. I couldn’t do that work because of the conditions associated with the job. Now I get to travel with my family as much as I want, without a schedule.

So very true.

At 58 I have tried to learn to fly several times. Started when I was 26, again at 35, tried again at 47 and now at 58 giving it another try. Each time what stopped me was cost. Just didn’t want to be in as much debt as my previous college debt. So I was trying to do a pay as you go. But, half way through ready to solo it looks like if I want to finish I will have to bite the bullet and fund the last little bit with someone else’s money again. Unlike many other younger students I don’t want or expect to become a commercial pilot. But I would like to get to CFI, to fill what I perceive a large void in instructor’s.

I'm 42 and am about to start flight training. I have been climbing the work ladder for many years and have been successful in that regard. All that success and the last 20yrs of my life was erased by a lazy first wife who divorced me and took everything. Now, I plan to get it all back with a career in aviation.

Thanks for this video ❤. I dreamt my whole life to fly, but there were always many things against it. Now I'm simulating since 2013 with XPlane with now around 4000h on different aircraft. But I'm now 60 years. No chance anymore to fly as a professional. 😢
