Flight Simulator 2020 Does Caching Work at all??? In this video I talk about some extensive testing that I did on the 2 caching systems in FS2020. The answer to this question is not a simple yes or no!
All of the footage in this video of flying around the Hollywood Ca. area was with manual caching at the low quality setting.
Here is a list of all of the locations in the sim that were created with photogrammetry. Make sure you manually cache any of these locations if you want to visit them with the highest visual fidelity:

This is misleading. Rolling cache wasn't designed to be a performance booster. Its simply a folder that stores the data of scenery you streamed during a flight. Once you hit your designated cache limit that can be set manually, it deletes the first area you downloaded and stored. This happens automatically when this is turned on. Saying that its broken because it doesn't add any performance doesnt make sense. It wasn't designed that way.

My FPS stay the same, but I used to see hickups here and there, and after disabling rolling cache, these are gone and it feels smooth. Additional fact for me to aggree with you that rolling cache is broken, and if anything, it only adds for additional processing going in the background that causes stutters to me. Great presentation. I found no difference with Cache either. Also appears that there's not much graphical improvement between med and high...even less difference between high and ultra. I turned Ultra off for the speed benefit of high setting. Could probably run at medium in some areas. Sure hope they use photogrametry for more airports and cities, although I think they purposely left out many cities to allow payware a reason to exist.

Rolling cache works: While online slew (yes that slew) around the area you want to cache (from lowest to highest altitude), change settings to offline, and fly. The graphics are now as sweet as being online. I'm sure rolling cache gets pretty fragmented since it can only "roll" based on the size of the cache. One area could be spread across the file therefore the larger the file the more fragmented and sluggish things can get.

Flying around New York I can see the graphics improve in front of my eyes as the data loads in as you fly along (and I can see this data download in task manger) and if I then go back to New York the high quality graphics is already there and I can see in task manger that no more data is getting downloaded so for me at least the rolling cache is working. I've also done some manual caching and again when flying over manual cached areas I can see there is no data download but whereas I can when flying over some non cached areas. I think it just really depends on which area you are flying over as the quality in bing maps is very inconsistent between regions. Manual cache is very bugged mind you, I cached the whole of the UK in Low detail with large parts in Medium and although I could see many gigabytes of data where actually downloaded the value for the region in the manual cache setting only shows it as a few megabytes (even though it now no longer downloads more data s you fly along) The biggest pain for me though is adding areas to the manual cache as it's painfully slow to do anything once you've already added and area. I'm enjoying FS2020 but with all the silly bugs I just wished they waited few more months before releasing it.

Did it help with stuttering at all? I noticed on my system (3900x,64gb ram,2070S ftw3 ultra overclocked) I get stuttering or pausing on occasion when it seems to be loading or generating scenery or new regions. And I don't mean stuttering where it turns into a slide slow or something while turning. I mean just flying straight and level every now and then it will pause for like half a second or something every now and then. I was hoping increasing my rolling cache or using manual cache would fix that. I also have a fairly fast connection (250 down). And as you stated manual cache doesn't work with regular sat images so that won't help me any in rural flying over Michigan and Ohio. Only over larger cities like Detroit and Toledo. I hope they fix that at some point.

@@badGamr You are correct, I just tested it. I ran it like I normally do, online mode, rolling cache on. Then I put it in offline mode and rolling cache on. The only thing that changed is it didn't do the voice atc thing anymore and I didn't have to ask for clearance to land or any of that. Everything looked exactly the same with the same performance. Most likely because that area was already in my cache. Then I turned off rolling cache. With that off I lost the fancy sat images. Honestly it didn't look "bad" though. Just didn't look exactly like where I actually live. For instance in one spot there is a big stone quary near me. With the cache on it renders it correctly and looks amazing. With it off the depression and hole is there but its mapped with houses and stuff lol. And performance was not better either, actually it was a bit worse! Frame rates dropped by a few fps over all, but were more constant. And I still got the same little random stutters and pauses, in the same exact places! How odd is that. So going to a manual cache isn't even going to fix the issues I wanted it to. Must be an optimization thing or something. Hopefully they will work out some of the kinks in the months to come. I think the pushed the release a bit early to be honest.

Tried to cache in high quality city with photogrametry today (Quebec city). Didn't work at all...had the same AI buildings than my previous flight in rolling cache. If you look at how much memory is used on cached areas outside of photogrammetry it is obvious that it can't do that much. Maybe the heightmap is slightly better and maybe the textures of the ground get slightly better, but AI generated buildings will see no impact at all on this. I found an area of 10x10 km will need only a few MB of manual cache memory. So you could easily download this on the fly even with a slow connection. For photogrammetry it's a whole different thing. The LA area is several gigabytes in data. So low/med/high should make a visible difference there. That said photogrammetry always looks kind of bad up close. It has not only buildings, but also trees and cars as heightmap data, which has a far too low resolution to depict it in a realistic way. Textures are blurry, too.

Here is the reason why the rolling cache doesnt work for many people: Yes, the game creates a huge block of cache, lets say 500GB. But it barely writes to the cache or load from it. So it doesnt use the cache atm.

I thought the cache feature is intended to simply reduces amount of times the software downloads the planet rendering data, no sense reloading an area every time you fly there if your continually flying in the same location. I don’t think it is intended to improve FPS but to save a persons data limits imposed but some internet providers. You said you unplugged your internet for part of the test and nothing changed.... I think that’s the whole purpose of the cache, to remove the reliance on the internet connection.

tmkongen I got the 10700k, I have all traffic at 100 and object and terrain distance at 200, and in every area of the game I have tried, the highest my cpu load has gotten to is about 50-55%. With the in-game Dev Mode FPS Counter, I will occasionally get the signal that my cpu is the bottleneck, but it will only last for half a second or so and go back to gpu bottleneck.

Your internet or visual settings are off big time for Seattle. That looks horrible. Here I posted the same location with photogammetry turned off, no manual cache for the area, but rolling cache on. Same spot as your 3:00 mark. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2219276410

badGamr despite all the bugs, I’m glad it released when it did. The place I live went into a second lockdown and it’s been an extremely depressing couple months until this game popped up on Game Pass. Never having tried a flight sim I decided to give this one a go cause it’s “free” so why not. While going for my first flight and seeing the beautiful vistas, I smiled for the first time in weeks and it’s been helping me cope ever since. This game came out at the time I needed it most :’)

I would say that depends on how it performs while streaming or rendering the data. I have 250mps down, which is plenty fast for this sim. They suggest 50 on the high end side. I still get occasional stutters when its streaming scenery and rendering it. I was hoping manually caching it would fix that problem.
