Microsoft Flight Simulator - How to setup manual caching AND what caching does for you!
Hi. In this follow up to my previous caching video I cover a number of elements of the manual caching system that I either glossed over or did not include in the last video. Moreover I cover new changes that have been made to the UI that make caching larger areas at high quality much easier than the old system
This is a COMPLETE how-to on using the rolling and manual cache systems. I follow this with an in-depth explanation of what the caching system is being used for by Microsoft Flight Simulator and let you decide whether it's something that you need or not.

I am running Windows 10 Pro with Bootcamp on a 2017 27" iMac. It uses a 4 core 4.2Ghz Core i7 processor with 40GB of RAM. My video card is the Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB of RAM and FS2020 is running on a dedicated high speed SSD connected via Thunderbolt 3.

If it is accepted across the board that rolling cache involves continuous read/write operations based on big data download, you will have additional system loads subject to multiple variables (internet speed and consistency, disk drive performance, etc.) Manually caching the same area takes the connection load out of the equation and reduces de read/write operations to mainly read only. With reduced system load you WILL have better frame rates, as you yourself say people are reporting. It's a matter of having a fast and large enough drive (manual cache should always be on the same disk as the sim) and manual is the way to go. Also,when paint brushing an area there's no need to pass the brush over each feature (i.e. pier). The brush is just a selection guide and the cached region is still the darker and larger rectangles that form as you move the brush. The pier was already cached before you repassed it with the brush. Just my 2 cents. Great video!

Thanks for another very clear and informative video and for doing the extensive testing! If it doesn't give me any fps benefits then I'll be switching off both flavours of cache for now. I am lucky in that my internet connection isn't too bad. All that disk access has got to have a performance impact, as you suggest, so I'll do without.

Late question sorry. If my internet is really slow and if I’ve already cached an area will the sim use the cache first or it try to use online data first? I noticed when playing on my series S that I get a lot of poor looking textures sometimes even in photogrammetry cities and I’m thinking its down to my internet speed. Recently got a gaming pc and was hoping that I can reduce this effect by using manual cache.
@badGamr
8 ай бұрын
Sadly I do not own a Series S and I suspect it may have different caching characteristics. I would try manual caching of an area and test it out and see if the photogrammetry is improved for that area. Sorry, wish I had a better answer for you.
So a bit of a difference from what you expressed here vs another video. If I have a manual cache region of medium quality with an internet connection, what do I see? Medium scenery or high? My goal is to relieve my download volume of a specific region when I approach it.
@badGamr
3 жыл бұрын
if you have an Internet connection then you will have high quality photogrammetry. The medium quality that you have cached will only be used if your Internet connection is lost.
Great video as usual badGamr. One follow-up that I'm still scratching my head about: if you can create a photogrammetry cache anywhere in the world, why is that in each world update they say they've added 'new photogrammetry cities'? Isn't the whole world automatically photogrammetry? Is there two levels of photogrammetry, normal and enhanced?
@badGamr
3 жыл бұрын
To the best of my knowledge there are two levels in the sim. Photogrammetry and AI generated. AI is not cached. Photogrammetry is cached at 3 different levels of quality. When I fly around the city of Santa Paula California everything is AI generated. When I fly around the city of Simi Valley California about 20 miles from Santa Paula everything is photogrammetry. Indeed when you look at the list of cities that are photogrammetry Simi Valley is listed in Santa Paula is not. I hope that helps.
Top Man Thanks

Thanks for a great video. However i have a slow connection (10 - 20mbs) so guessing would be best to create a manual cache. Will the cache work with low bandwidth over my manual cache or is it just best to just go offline rather than stream a show bandwidth quality?

@@badGamr hi, thanks for getting back. I've been trying all these options and just reset to default as you've suggested. I'll have to see what happens as I rebuild the cache. God its so frustrating!
Wish I'd skipped to the end and not started setting up it up... I have a great internet connection. But to your statement it does not help FPS, why are my rates sometimes much slower than other times? If I had cached it, seems like it would always be high. Since it's rolling, when I fly around the world and then come back to my home airport, it has to grab and cache it again. What am I missing here? Thanks! 🙂
@badGamr
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben. FPS results were the results of my testing. I get massive variations in FPS as well but my testing has shown me that cache has had zero positive impact on it. None. But everyone's situation and systems/connections are different. I encourage you to create a test plan for yourself and determine what will work best for your specific scenario.
Hey man what is the rolling cache limit ? Does it make a difference what I set it to or keep it at default? I currently play online so everything looks amazing obviously but I do switch to offline from time to see if it would look as good and obviously it doesn’t but I wonder if that could be fixed when the rolling cache limit is increased
@badGamr
2 ай бұрын
Rolling cache is limited by disk space. Bear in mind when you set a limit on rolling cache it will start filling the cache over again at the start once it is full.
Hi! Yes this is helpful. Instead of naming it "Caching" they should have named it "Saving"... If my internet is working and I have the area in my rolling cache, will the sim decide for me to use the cache (faster, no download)? If I fly from A to B, and back to A, the rolling cache would still have A available? Do you know how many square miles are stored in say 10Gb of rolling cache? What about Low/Medium/High quality, does that apply to rolling cache?
@badGamr
3 жыл бұрын
Low / med / high does not really apply to Rolling. It uses HQ only. If you have an area in cache already and your internet is up it will not fetch from rolling - It will write to rolling only in that instance and will use the internet fetched version. No idea what the relationship of physical area to cache size is but it will be dependent on the amount of geometry that you are flying over. Manhattan will fill up the rolling cache faster than farmlands in Kansas for example. Hope that helps!

This system is very clunky. We should be able to zoom way out and select an entire State, then select the quality of cache we would like to download. It takes forever to zoom in that far, in order to have high detail. Another thing. If I'm flying over an area that I've already Manually Cached, why is the Sim using all my bandwith trying to use Photogrammetry for that same area? This is rather redundant...
badGamr ... this is a great video and accurate in most respects ... except one. In Part Two (at around the 13 min mark) you imply that the manually cached areas will be useable and visible in OFFLINE mode. Not so. If you launch the sim ONLINE and then disconnect the internet to go OFFLINE (and get corresponding messages in sim) you can have some success flying in pre-cached areas (I say some because sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't ... and sometimes it outright crashes to desktop). BUT ... it you launch the sim with no internet connection (OFFLINE from the get go) and THEN try to fly into pre-cached areas, it absolutely DOES NOT work! Have you tested this scenario? I need some corroboration on this. It's a feature that should work ... but doesn't work.
