To add to this quality video... Rolling cache is an online mode and includes photogrammetry data captured based on your current graphics setting, ultra, high-end etc. It is an online mode meant to speed up, smooth out, and compliment the online data transfers by storing local. One has to fly over areas a few times to build up this cache to see performance increase. Manual cache is an offline mode captured and downloaded from servers over your desired areas. I do not think it is photogram data and is lesser quality. It looks a lot like XP scenery. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I have know idea why there are some people in the msfs community who are adamant that manual caching does nothing for performance. My FPS (approx 60, so never an issue) didn't change at all but my stuttering on final approach is 100% gone by doing this. I also believe the clarity and detail is far superior for those cached regions. The lack of stuttering makes sense to me because nobody's internet connection is perfect and the game is constantly relying on a perfect connection/speed. This way, the game just has to obtain all the scenery from your hard drive.

@@2020fsers Not a problem, thanks for the video!
Hi, nice video. I have been using manual caching for sometime now as my Internet bandwidth is 50 Mbps which is just about the minimum requirement for photogrammetary. It used to work fine till I tried caching the region around London City Airport EGLC. I cached the region and it made a big 5 GB file. However, when I jumped into the sim all I got were melted buildings (except for the ones that are not dependent on photogrammetry.

I don't have fiber so I have DSL so around 5mb/s download but I have a lot of mostly 4tb seagate skyhawk HDDs from work that the customer wanted to get replaced and I keep the ones that are still working and around 200mb/s sequential reads and writes since they are from servers running 24/7 they have a lot of power on hours but not much power cycle count and start stop count, I have one 10tb helium filled one with some interface CRC error count and it remainded unchanged when looking at the log so just a faulty SATA cable and I have 4x4tb RAID 10 array with intel RST which was good choice over RAID0 as 2 drives have failed so far but I have many replacements in my drawer, and set my manual cache size to 1000gb on the RAID 10 array drive and the folder size is actually 3,51TB not sure why but don't care with nearly with 2.36tb of free space left, the game is ofc installed on an SSD - WD black SN770 1tb and it really helped with that amount of data the HDD is still way faster than my internet is so I'll probably increase the size to a few more Tb and instead of deleting the cache I'll put it on the 10tb drive with 6tb free space.
Thank you for your informative video. I have been wrestling with either on or off for about a year and a 1/2 now and I still haven't come to a conclusion which is better. You tell me... So I don't fly in the same spot and I hop all around the world but I do have fast Internet at over 1GB. So since I have fast Internet and I jump all over the globe would you recommend keeping this off?

Keeping manual cache off ? It's not something to turn on or off . You must be thinking about rolling cache .

I would love to see a follow up on this where you do a comparison of before and after of a cached region also letting us know how much space it’s takes up and about how much area could you expect to cache like 1gb = 10 square miles. And how long did it take to save that amount of data.
@2020fsers
Жыл бұрын
I probably won't do a comparison it's easy enough to try it and see how you like it. I can say that I was able to cache the entire USA in low, and it used about 3.5gb of space . The time to download it completely up to the speed of your connection . Mine is very slow so it took a couple hours for me.

Not necessarily if you are having issue with certain area scenery being not great then manually cache that area and it should.clear up.
Is it possible to make the sim use another disk for the cashe other than the default, in my case disk C that begin to be full. I want it to save the cashe to another disk.

if you need to do this work around then no you cannot if you dont need to use the work around yes you can select the disk and save there.

i am not sure i was going to do the exact same thing for the USA. i was planning on caching at the low and med around airports or break it up into groups or regions and label them. i was going to set aside 200gb and i hope thats enough

@@2020fsers The quality of manual cache seems poor, even when captured at high settings. What is your take? I don't think manual cache downloads include photogrammetry? Not sure.
how can i change the default location of the rolling cache?
@2020fsers
Жыл бұрын
ok its pretty easy create a new folder on your desktop and then in the rolling cache section click the location box and enter the new location thats it.
Very nice tutorial! But I have a question! Can I move rollingcache and manualcache to another hard drive? Or does that have a negative effect?
@2020fsers
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment 👍 you can move the rolling cache to another drive and as long as it's an ssd there shouldn't be any issues but manual cache you cannot move doing the workaround this way . It must stay in that local cache folder .

I installed FS2020 on D: drive (second partition on fast NVME drive) and created Manual Cache and Rolling Cache on separate SSD SATAIII drive. Checked offline with Rolling Cache disabled. Flew over New York (several files about 20GB in Manual Cache) and it seems to be working fine. Unfortunatelly not all ground textures was there even over region was cached. ( Bandwidth from that drive was about 5MB/s reading only in Task Manager and no retrieval from ethernet. Not sure if this works by simply moving the manual cash file from drive C: to another drive.

@@2020fsers Yep. It was all in HQ (20GB). Meanwhile it looks correct in online mode (40Mbit/s bandwith) and i can fly smooth without stutters over NY at 1000 ft and KJFK with some FSLTL traffic in Quest 2 VR, no melting buildings around with high setting at TAA on RTX 3080 (10GB). So manual cache is indispensable in such scenario.
would this be a solution for the melted London?

manual cache is a little buggy for sure you may need to delete the region and redownload it .
Do we have to delete and recreate manual cache every time there is a msfs update
@2020fsers
Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily .. what you can do is after you have cached everything you want then COPY the file to a backup location then if there is an update that comes over then you won't be blindsided with the update and loose everything . After the update you can put the backup file in the cache folder again. But here's the big but I know after any updates you need to delete your rolling cache because of changes in the sim or whatever and if you don't it can cause stutters so I can only assume that this can also be the case for manual cache so you may need to re cache everything . I would try the 1st way I said and if you get stutters bad then you will need to delete the file and remake a new manual cache. Hope that helps
Is there a particular reason why a manually cached region takes so long to download? I have the region around the grand canyon cached but it took over 24 hours for the download to finish with well over 100Mb/s download speed and the total cache size is only 82 MB. I have no bandwidth limit set in MSFS settings.

@@2020fsers For my case there might be a different error. When I was initially installing MSFS I was getting about 7 Mb/s download but I installed NordVPN, changed my server location, and the download speed increased to about 90 Mb/s. I have no clue how to identify the bottleneck in that situation.

Hey thanks for the comment .. indid explain this in the beginning of the video but manual cache is great for 2 reasons people with slow internet that want good ground textures and prevent thing popping in all the time and second if you want high resolution ground textures and details on objects . The level of detail that you can get using manual cache is far better than just letting the sim download as you fly .

Yeah If you use the high quality level you may see things that you otherwise wouldn't using the manual cache . Others have told me this and I also have experienced great textures and roads the roads aren't green they are black when I manually cached . Not sure how you lr roads look normally 🤔 but mine were not life like .

Does this still hurt performance overall to use a higher ground setting even if cached?
Asobo needs to take the mystery out of this process. AKA a USER MANUAL. Everyone is guessing and spreading misinformation. Perhaps myself included. The manual cache can be greyed out if you try to go to options/data menu after a flight has started. You have to go to options/data from the main menu before a flight is started. Also cache is cache. Once deleted, You have to build it back up by flying over the scenery in online mode a few times before you see a performance increase. Also rolling cache includes photogrammetry whereas manual cache i for offline mode and seems different, almost like X-plane scenery, even when captured with high quality setting.Manual cache purpose is to fly offline in captured areas. The quality seems poor. Could be that I am doing something wrong. Have you compared quality of manual cache?
Bruh, turn your microphone down. You must have been red lined when you recorded it, it is really, really harsh on any decent pair of studio monitors. You might have compressed it or put on a limiter, but the initial vocal recording is unlistenable
