Fix for Annoying Belt Chirp Squeak on Mercedes C class W204

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Is your drive belt making noise and driving you nuts? Time to replace that belt tensioner on your Mercedes? Maybe not.

    I have an E55 AMG with same chirping even after new pulley and bolt cover installed. I sprayed back of belt with water and it went away, so turns out my tensioner is misaligned so the belt is chirping as it ride across the pulley. I don't think the tensioner alignment is adjustable so it's either belt dressing or a different belt to correct it. Trying dressing first as it's cheaper and since it's the back of the belt, a gatorback belt probably won't make much difference.

    This is a very temporary solution, get the kit with all the idler pulleys, tensioner and belt as soon as you hear squeaking beacause on these cars, if the tensioner gets weak, it will shred the belt and get you stranded.

  • @merczero1184

    Indeed, if you're going to do this, you need to check it regularly. If you notice any excessive or uneven wear or just want peace of mind, just get the kit and change it. Plus, it's pretty easy to reach in and feel how much tension is on the belt and to watch it run. This was more to address that annoying chirp everyone complains about with these cars. A lot of the time it seems, the tensioner isn't bad, it's just the bearing in the tensioner pulley.

    www.fcpeuro.com/products/mercedes-accessory-drive-kit-adk0012p ^ Been running on this for 3 years now and I recommend the parts, that site has life time warranty so when those parts go in 5-6 years you ust send them back and they replace them.

    Also PelicanParts.com is decent. RockAuto.com you can get really good prices but you have to make sure it's a quality brand. They carry some premium stuff but also some cheap junk as well. In Canada, Germanparts.ca is great but their prices aren't always the best. Just a quick google search and you'll find what's best.

    Great video, I checked my belt and belt alignment and there were no problems. I noticed the sound started right after I cleaned my engine at the manual car wash using the degreaser mode. Right now I have a low level squeak, when I start the car in the morning...then it goes away. So I will try your recommendation. Thank you for sharing.

    You're welcome Dwayne! It is also possible if you catch it early and are careful, you can take the pulley off, remove the seal and repack the bearing with grease. Then replace the seal. Either way best of luck, glad it helped!

    Hi Quinn, I used the Sonax CC36 Ceramic coating. I got the whole kit on sale for $70 or $80 CAD. It's decent but if I ever do a coating again I'd likely go for the CQuartz UK 3.0. It's a lot of work to do a ceramic coating so having something that stands up a little better to the salt and sand during winter would be nice. The Sonax does work but it doesn't seem to be as durable. If you just want great water beading in a paint sealant, Sonax Polymer Net Shield is a really good product.

    Didnt have chirping sound with old belt. Had belt replaced and it chirps all the way till the car warms up to operating temperature then it goes away. It's a 2012 c class with 62,000 miles. Any idea what I should look for?

  • @merczero1184

    @merczero1184

    5 жыл бұрын

    Was the old belt fairly worn? I'd spray a little water on the belt while it's running, if the chirp goes away it's likely the belt or a misaligned pulley. If it keeps chirping you may have a bad bearing. It's completely possible that the old belt was really stretched out and the new one is tighter so it's putting more tension on the pulley's and bearings. Replacing the idler pulley's and tensioner are semi regular maintenance on these cars anyway.

    @merczero1184

    It's a bad pulley or bearing. Or worn belt. If the tensioner, belt and pullies are near the service interval, just change them. Running oil into the bearings is only a temporary solution.

    Hi Jairo, I think I understand your question. Likely a seal was damaged or the belt flying around in there hit one of the plastic bits and cracked it. Follow the oil trail and you'll find the faulty part. It's not uncommon for some gaskets to start to leak as they get older, so best to take a good look around while replacing your belt and pullies. Best of luck with it!

    damn, i think i have this problem as well :(. I also just replaced a tensioner and two pulleys and about, 6/7 days later it started squeeking, kinda chirping like a baby chicken.... I'd blame the tensioners and pulleys i just bought, especially since i think i got finessed and was sent some knock offs, but when looking at the crankshaft pulley it looks to be a little wobbly. Out of curiosity, what was the mileage on your Benz when your crankshaft pulley started making the noise? My is a 2008 model but only has 77k miles.

    You can use any good penetrating lubricant, I used Lloyd's Moovit. DON'T use WD-40 unless it's their penetrating lubricant specifically. Put a little bit behind the retainer and let it soak in, a little more then wipe the excess and start the car for a few mins. Then repeat one more time. Make sure you get all the oil off the belt and pulley surface that contacts it. Also make sure you look at the belt for any excess wear, if that's the case, replace the tensioner. Also watch it run after a cold start and make sure there isn't a lot of jump or vibration in the belt or tensioner itself. Again if there is, you should likely replace it. I hope that helps!

    You have endure all this BS after paying so much to these Mercs! They want you to replace parts to make money period! I can understand if issues come up say after 100K or 150K miles but something’s to come up even before 100k is ridiculous. I am having a W166 engine with 80K miles and there’s a whining noise in cold starts. I have had to replace so many parts even though I bought a certified vehicle from a Merc dealer. Shame on the company to make lemons that break down so much! There should be a class action suit on this company!!!

    Hi razvan jzb, it's really tough to know and I haven't spent any time in the W205 gen. If it's happening at a specific speed or speed range and not related to engine RPM as it appears, I'd check the drive-train and/or check for anything that could be whistling with air going by it. ( for ex, I've noticed on cooler days if I hit the road before the internal air starts blowing, the flap for outside air is shut and it causes a low volume whistle sound until it opens up) Does the sound go away as speed gets higher or the pitch change? Have you done any body mods? If there's any kind of low grinding or rumble associated with the sound?

  • @razvanjzb1043

    @razvanjzb1043

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your reply! The sound does change it's pitch somewhat but it still sounds like a "whine" at all times. If i am slightly accelerating or coasting it's there between speeds 50-62km/h although if I floor the gas pedal or hit the brake it goes away and I also noticed the whine is louder on colder days however there are no other sounds like low grinding or rumble and I didn't do any mods to it. Just so you know as I was reading forums about this issue, ive seen W204 generation with this exact issue too and other mercedes models as well. Thank you for your time

    Almost makes me wonder if it's an intake issue, maybe the throttle body or related to incoming pressure vs the turbo.....My best advice at this point would be to find a good independent mechanic. Anyone who is decent, and actually cares about doing a good job, will have a system for narrowing down the problem which is what you need. I would just be taking random guesses because I'm not familiar with this issue. If you can't find anything wrong with major parts of the vehicle, transmission, engine, etc. leave it alone. It will either get worse, break or go away. Either way you'll be able to narrow it down. Sorry I can't be more help. If you figure it out let me know what you find.

It actually made me think of your problem and I'll bet you have a bad center support bearing or an issue with the carrier itself.
