One of the daughters of Gerald and Nest is my ancestor. Angharad, who was married to William de Barry, who is my direct paternal ancestor (hence the profile picture). It was a pleasant surprise to see Gerald's and Nest's names on a random video suggestion in my feed.

@@norlofthor7088 My last name is a variant of de Barry, but to confirm whether or not I was actually descended from the de Barry's, I took a Y-chromosomal test and submitted the results to the database on ftDNA, which confirmed that about 700 years ago, my direct paternal ancestor diverged from the bulk of the rest of the Barry's in Ireland. They're all over Southern Ireland, and my documented ancestry, so far, ends with my great-great-grandfather. I'd like to find some records of him in Ireland, but it's highly doubtful that I'll find anything. He didn't immigrate because his life was going great, after all, so I'd be surprised if anybody kept any records about him, especially in the early 1800s. If someone in Ireland takes the test and shows a much closer relation, within the past 200 or 300 years, that'd be a major boon. But you can't fool that DNA. I'm definitely one of Philip's many direct descendants, just one of the lesser-born ones. Luckily, those earlier generations are well documented.

@@norlofthor7088 Just read the wiki about the de Barry family. They're a Norman family that accompanied William the Conqueror during his invasion in England. They married into Gerald of Windsor's family, settled in Wales, and then took part in the invasion of Ireland, settling in County Cork.

What I know is that my Y-chromosomal DNA connects me with nearly every other Barry male whose ancestry comes from Ireland, which means that there is an unbroken line of fathers and sons that connects me all the way back to Philip de Barry, who is the first of the Barrys in Ireland. Within 3 generation of the de Barry family entering into England, there were at least a dozen males born into the family who didn't inherit titles, lands, money, etc... and were basically nobodies. That number only grew as the centuries went by. As commoners, they wouldn't have documentation that gives birth dates, baptisms, marked graves, etc... What I know is that my DNA definitively links me to Philip, who definitely was the grandson of Gerald and Nest. I feel like I've been exceptionally and repeatedly clear about all of this.

As a Fitzgerald, whose lineage has also been traced back to these ancestors, hello to all of my cousins out there! So many fellow Fitzies. Great video! 😊

Im so proud to be a Fitzgerald...my grandfather was born in Ireland in 1892 and came to Australia at a young age,he fought in two world wars for Australia, WW1 and WW2, he never told many people of his past so sadly we never found out where he was born,and sadly he passed away before i was born, you are my hero Grandad.....

You could have also chosen Brian Boru, a native Gaelic king who actually did unify Ireland as a single kingdom under his rule (albeit briefly for 12 years) and his progeny the O'Briens. During Brian's reign, the title of High King actually had real meaning as all of the underkings had pledged fealty to him by 1002. It was only in 1014, during a joint Norse-Leinster rebellion, had anyone opposed his rule. Clontarf was a pyrrhic victory for the Irish. They had crushed the rebellion and broken Viking power in Ireland yet, their unifying leader was dead. Had Brian not been killed at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, Ireland would have probably developed into a feudal Kingdom similar to that of France or Scotland. Sadly, with Brian's death came the old disunification and infighting that he attempted to quell which made it simple for the Normans to conquer the island.

i agree with you on some of this , the infighting was a problem before this too as i think the scotti tribe was being quashed by the as i thought the o'neills and im sure that was maybe before 400 ad , maybe it was the obriens its so long ago i read the history of ireland , i think infighting was a problem in most places and countries , all they seemed to do was fight , no telly or shops

He was exiled from Ireland for a time and travelled as far as Libya and fought with the Knights of St. John and the Knights of Rhodes. His epithet was from his interest in alchemy. It is said his ghost returns "on the seventh day of the seventh month of the seventh year" in Kilkea Castle. He is also an ancestor (through his granddaughter) of the Digby family, who produced Jane Digby, a scandalous adventurer in the 19th century who had lovers and husbands in Bavaria, Greece, and eventually married an Arab Sheikh in Ottoman Syria.

My Grandmother was a FitzGerald. She always used to make a point of the large G in the name, and talked about spending time at Glin Castle during her youth. I had no idea how prominent this family was!!! Brilliant video, and so nice to see so many other comments from this lineage.

Fantastic research. Came to the US in the 80s from Ireland and married a Fitzgerald. Still married to the lass. She's having a not-so-great day today but after watching your timeline I just told her that she's my Mona Lisa.

Only way you're going to figure it out is that you do ancestry and trace your line. Unfortunately, because your surname is Fitzgerald that doesn't mean you're related to them. Especially because you're female too.

While I have no Fitzgerald blood that I'm aware of. My paternal ancestors the O'Dempseys were one of the only few families to resist Strongbow and eventually became the Viscounts of Clanmalier under the Stuarts.

The union between lreland and britain broke in 1922 (Anglo-Irish Treaty) when the 26 counties became the Irish free State. Ireland became a republic all but name in 1937 (executive power act) when the office of the president was formed as well as controlling it own international policy. It was not until 1949 (Republic of Ireland act) Ireland became official known as the Republic of Ireland and left the commonwealth Good video and enjoy your work.

She was not Leonardo's wife he just painted her and her husband was a silk merchant from a prominent family in his own right.

This was great and I wish you would do more Irish dynasties! My family name can be traced back to Norman-Gaelic times (back to 1172 and Gilbert MacOisdealbhaigh, a junior branch of Jocelyn Nangle, who's senior branch, Nagle, held the title Baron of Navan for a few centuries) and there is still a barony in County Mayo named after our line.

The Gherardini origin is hotly disputed by historians just no way to be sure

I’d really love to see some family trees of different Scottish clans from you.

My mother’s maiden name was FitzGerald, and her branch of the family came to Canada (early 1800s?) from Turlough, County Mayo. No grand earl’s palaces for them, although they must fit into the family tree somewhere. Our family has had lots of Maurices, Desmonds, and Edwards, so the names are consistent. I think I have a family tree done by a great-aunt, so will see if I can marry up the two charts 🇨🇮🇨🇦

My cousin was the last of that family to live at Turlough! His stepfather was one of the 'Fighting Fitzgeralds'. I think were descended from the Burnchurch family in County Kilkenny but I'll have to check up on that.

Great video :) my maternal grandmother's family are Fitzgerald's. Such a shame so many of our records were destroyed (and that we weren't great record keepers too), I'll never be able to trace our line pre early 1800s.

I can, maybe not directly but.. Your second name is O´Neill olden version was Ui Neil. They were kings of Ulster all the way up until the plantations of the 1600´s and still tried rebeliions there for years after. Strongest around where modern day Tyrone is, roughly.

I've got some GERARDs from Lancashire, it never occurred to me that they might descend from the FitzGeralds; though I have several lines of descent from Gerald de Windsor.

I only found out all this when researching my maternal lineage and who they are descended from which led me to it. Her' s goes all over the place and not just Irish it also leads to a lot more besides that figure even more prominent in history like Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Stewart's, Plantagenent' s, Queen Victoria, the Huns, the Yellow Emperor of China, the Xiongnu who were also a part of the Huns and many others. A lot of royal families since they are all related, aristocrats, Vikings, Native Americans etc some famous and some infamous. I never realized I had that much Irish in my heritage I knew there was some but not nearly to that extent and I have yet to do my father's lineage and descent and ancestry. I know he has Queen Victoria and a lot of Scottish and German like the Stewart's at the very least it will be interesting to find out more about.

I'm Directly related to Maurice FitzGerald through the Butler family of Ireland on my Maternal side, Didn't realize there was an Italian link or a JFK link either so that will be interesting for me to go and study now as well, thank you for your informative video and charts.

Missed out on Lord Edward Fitzgerald, who fought in with the Brits in the American war of Independence, and then later attempted to launch a rebellion in Ireland after falling in love with the native Irish culture.

My grandmother’s family is the Fitzgeralds from Ireland. She married my grandfather, Fred Carroll from the O’carroll clan. A very powerful warrior clan of Ireland. They now live in Canada.

Gerald FitzGerald the 8th Earl of Kildare was my 18th great grandfather through the Hennessy (Cognac) line of my family. My 17th great grandfather was hung with Silken after the Kildare rebellion.

Leinster house is the house of the parliament (the oireachtas) of the republic and the prime minister (Taoiseach). The president (Uachtarán) works and lives at Áras an Uachtaráin in the Phoenix park. The president is the head of state he is the equivalent of the queen in the UK but he is elected. Great video!

Minor corrections: The Oireachtas is the government as a whole while the "Dáil" is the parliment. The president of Ireland is like the Queen, but with much less power. He is but a figure head witha ceremonial role in government. No actual power

I am a descendant of Guillermo de Morfi y Calana/William Murphy a knight of Santiago in Spain. His grandmother was Katherine Fitzgerald of the Earls of Kildare. Her father was Gerald Fitzgerald the 9th Lord of Kildare. Sebastian de Morfi a great great grandson founded Utuado Puerto Rico in 1743.

3:38 Of course. There are always the families of the main Irish kingdons however. (Leinster, Munster, Connacht etc) And the families of them often intermarried. One on Brian Ború, possibly the ONLY ever High-King to be undisputed, and his family would be great. Keep up the great work anyway I'll be watching all your videos anyway whatver family its on 👍

Yep there are a lot of FitzGeralds in my family

We are all related somewhere in our family trees.

According to Ancestry DNA i am a descendant of the Kildare FitzGeralds, says that Sir Gerald II FitzGerald the 11th Earl of Kildare is my 20th Great Grandfather. He and Lady Browne had a daughter named Mary who married a Nugent, then they had a daughter named Margaret who married an O'Brien. I am learning so many new things about my family history, thank you !

The Normans got very far in Europe. I heard a story about a Irish soldier in the British Army billeted to a small Sicilian town in WW2.The locals were reserved until they found out his name was Fitzgerald.Turns out the town was settled by Norman knights in the 11 century.Small world.

My Great grandmother was Catherine Fitzgerald of County Cork. She was born in 1867. Don't know when her and her father, Thomas sailed to America? Married my Great grandfather in 1890 in New Hampshire.

My great grandmother was a Fitzgerald from Ireland! Probably not of the same family but it would be cool if it were. I will have to check with one of my aunts who has the family tree written down somewhere.

The offices of the President would be in Áras an Uachtaráin in Phoenix Park. Pretty sure Leinster house just holds an Dáil (Parliament) of the two houses, an Oireachtas (lower house) & an Seanad (upper house).

As my own family tree has been documented numerous times and as a cousin of JFK I am wondering at some of the differences that exist in your chart and their own documentation. Rodrigo Ignacio They many different O' connors many of them unrelated .The most famous would be the connacht O'Connors which is probably the family you are thinking of.

Hi Matt! I have been enjoying your videos since KZread's algorithm brought one up into my suggestions a few days ago. To my delight this is one of the videos I found. Nest ferch Rhys and Henry I are 27th great grandparents of mine but not through their son, Henry. I have separate lines back to both of them. My line from Nest comes from her and Gerald's son, Maurice. From there it goes Gerald, Maurice, Maurice, and then to a female line, Juliane. That being said, I hadn't thought about a possible connection with the family of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Were you able to find her line back to Gerald and Nest? I have not been able to find one via Google or Geni.com. I would be very grateful if you could point me in the correct direction to sources to see the connection between Rose and Nest. Thank you!! Great video! It was interesting to learn about the Fitzgerald history. I have both Fitzgeralds and Kennedys in my family tree. My dad's sisters have said they thought we were related to the Kennedys (JFK's family) which I haven't been able to confirm. My paternal great grandmother Nora Fitzgerald was born in Meath, Ireland and moved to Springfield, Massachusetts and then Chicago. Nora's father's name was Michael J. Fitzgerald born in Meath, Ireland. Nora Fitzgerald married John Joseph Dowd born in County Kerry Ireland whose mother's maiden name was Mary Kennedy born in Ireland.

I'm a FitzGerald, whose family emigrated to Newfoundland prob sometime in the 1750s from Munster .. I think I might descend from the Desmond line . Learned recently that piracy was prominent there in the 17th century.

Coastal clans were notorious for it and the Fitzgeralds were based in Tralee and Askeaton castles but were also overlords of many Irish and Norman clans in that part of Desmond.

My last name is Jerrell, and we are descendants of the FitzGerald’s. I was able to follow our line back to Ireland, and this video answered some of my questions. Some of the children of the FitzGerald’s that came to America changed the spelling to different variations, Jerrell/Gerald/Jarrell, etc., still some questions as to why, some think to not sound too Irish, which is ironic, as the FitzGerald’s were “more irish than the Irish themselves”.

I miss so much this guy's voice 😊

Brilliant family tree but Nest had a daughter who had another leader of the conquest named Milo de Cogan. Her kids and grandkids basically invaded Ireland with a few lads and and a cuddle.

Doing my maternal grandmother's family tree, I discovered we are not only descended from the FitzGeralds, but also the MacCarthy Reagh dynasty as well as the O'Sullivan Bere line. And I just thought we were random immigrants 😁

my great great grandmothers maiden name was Fitzgerald. My ancestors on my fathers side came from Ireland. So interesting.

Hello Hannah ! My Great Grandmother , Helen M. Fitzgerald Paull & Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy were cousins. Maybe we are related ?

This is literally fascinating. I have been studying lately on a few of the old Irish families who ended up being royalists and supported King Charles I not only against parliament but a few even during the Irish Confederate war prior to Cromwell. Among those was a branch of the Fitzgeralds, Col John Fitzgerald, who even went into exile with Charles (with some of his regiments). I would very much like to hear one of your family trees on the O'Brien family of Munster. They are said to be descended from Brian Boru himself (and therefore maybe a bit "more Irish" than the Fitzgeralds in that sense) and became English peers and supported King Charles.

Just to let everyone know, Ireland did not go through this willingly
