It's amazing how much Reloaded reveals. So basically the first movie says The One freed the first humans who made Zion, and when the One died, the Oracle prophesied his return. Also it's the Year 2199, so 200 years in the future. Reloaded reveals the real truth . . . The One rebuilds Zion after it's destroyed and the entire population of thousands is killed. He frees new people to rebuild Zion and lies to them, "Hey, the Matrix was just built and you're the first ever humans I've freed, yep, no humans before you were ever freed, now go build Zion, a city you're rebuilding for the first time." When that One dies, people wait for the new One. The new One goes on the same path as the previous One. The thousands of humans who've rebuild Zion since the last One for the past century are all killed as Zion is destroyed again. The one chooses the door to free 23 new people to rebuild Zion. Rinse and repeat. So Neo is the 6th one and it's REALLY 2699 . . . which means it's basically a Millennium since the 1700s at this point . . . So, really Neo is just ANOTHER One . . . Here's what makes Neo different (in the sense, why Neo, this trilogy could be about ANY One, so why Neo), the previous five Ones, they all choose the door to free 23 humans to rebuild Zion. Neo on the other hand, he's basically a wrench thrown in the Architect's cycle. Like the other five Ones, Neo was supposed to do the same. HOWEVER, he has fallen in love with Trinity. And it's that love that basically "blinds" Neo from making "the correct choice". Neo is the One who let love "blind him" and chose the OTHER door to save Trinity, thus Neo has now screwed up the Architect's cycle which has been working smoothly for six centuries . . . Wow that's a lot :D Edit: Also, the previous five Ones, they didn't accidentally imprint their code onto an Agent, giving an Agent One-Powers. Neo's little move of going into Smith and blowing him up from the inside gave Smith One-Powers, so now there's the added element of there's a rogue Agent basically corrupting the Matrix by copying himself into everyone, throwing a second wrench into the Architect's cycle which has been working smoothly for six centuries, lol.

13:48 (Literal) translation of the French swearing: "G*ddamn of wh*re of br*thel of filth of a-hole of bugg*r of mother". It doesn't make much sense in English since the swearing is so different, there's no easy way to chain swear words in English, but in French you can just keep going by adding 'of' in between curses. Most of the words aren't literally meant when swearing (even though they're still roughly as vulgar as if they were meant).

When this film first came out I was on a school trip to Paris (I'm from the UK, so it wasn't far to go), so we went to see it in a French cinema, where it was subtitled in French. The bit where the Merovingian swears in French made everyone else in the cinema burst out laughing. Our French teacher, who we assumed understood what was said, wouldn't tell us what it meant. I know the pain of that curiosity.

Literally 'Whore of shit', where 'putain(e) de' is used to indicate the worst extreme of an example, where an American would say 'fucking'. For example, French 'putain de voiture' translates as 'whore of [a] car', where Americans would say 'fucking car'. The Parisian vernacular pronounces this as three syllables - putain d'merde - similar to how many American regional dialects say "fuckin'" rather than pronouncing the final 'g'. For reference, see the French girl assisting Harrison Ford in "Frantic", who says 'Oh, putain d'merde!' during the film in her apartment. Bordel de merde - literally 'whorehouse of [a]' has the same general connotation - the worst extreme of a case. The concatenation of these two terms is most famous from "The Matrix: Reloaded", where the character known as the Merovingian swears in French as "Nom de Dieu de putain de bordel de merde de saloperie de connard d'enculé de ta mère!'. 'Nom de Dieu' is literally "Name of God", where an American would say "God Dammit". A 'saloperie' is a dirty trick. 'Connard' is used like the American 'asshole' - figuratively, not literally. 'Enculé', root word 'cul' meaning 'asshole', literally, means sodomized, fucked in the ass. In the movie, the native French-speaking actor playing the Merovingian ad-libbed this phrase when asked to swear in French, which the Wachowski Brothers liked so much that they added it to the script. An approximate American version would be "Goddammit, fucking piece of shit, fucking asshole, fuck your mother in the ass." In French, as he says, "It's like wiping your ass with silk." Right it's not a bad translation, but you cannot just translate french word for word, it just doesn't work like that. The translation would be "godamn fucking load of shit, asshole, mother fucker. Enculé with the accent is past tense, so means fucked, as in fucked of your mother .

I think one of the cooler parts of this movie are the "old programs" turning up in the new matrix where they're hiding/living. That's how you get vampires (the dudes in Club Hell), Ghosts (the two freaky white twins), even Persephone and Hades (at least I always interpreted the Merovingian as Hades). They're not "nods" to the old creatures or anything. They are literally, point blank, those creatures/deities from an old version of the matrix where the machines tried to create such things to control people.

Then later found out the role was actually written with the idea of casting him but he turned down the role cause he didn't want his martial arts digitally recorded on file or something which is crazy cause now in 2024 i think you can do just with technology without human involvement.

The freeway care chase scene is basically all practical, up until the big explosion at the end. It was filmed on a two-mile long fake freeway loop constructed on the runways of the former Alameda Naval Air Station, which had closed a few years before the movie was made. The barrier walls lining the freeway were built to hide the surrounding views of Oakland and San Francisco.

the irony of Smith, in the first movie he called the human race a virus, and in Reloaded he has become a computer virus that can infect people and Programs inside the Matrix like a worm or trojan virus. Yes He copied himself onto the human mind of Bane and assumed his identity, and was "downloaded" into Bane's brain, thus Bane is now a Smith, sabotaging things and seeking to kill Neo in the real world.... Note: Neo's "power" to stop the squids (the Sentinels) he's projecting a transmission from his mind, connecting to the Sentinels and mentally commanding them to "STOP!" and as a result they overload and self destruct. Because Neo's mind is still connected to The Source. The Source is the Machine race's central mainframe but also it's the main power hub that distributes energy to ALL mechanoid machine life forms that exist. these facts might of been not entirely clear, but from extrapolating what is presented in the movies, it wasn't that hard to figure out. It's a kind of Technopathy (accessing technology with one's mind)

  • @ceremus

OK, I want to point out a couple of quotes from Angelina real quick, "She [The Oracle] is not taking any power away from you is what you have to understand, she just knows what's going to happen." "Neo is here to free everyone so that people have their own free will and aren't part of the Matrix, and now that [Agent Smith] is free from the machine he feels the opposite ... That was his whole identity, that was his whole thing, Neo took that away from him and he hates that!" I feel like Angelina downplays herself or makes herself out to be a dummy or whatever, but those are _legitimately_ some of the most insightful things I've heard someone say about Reloaded. Keep watching the sequels for sure, I want to hear what you have to say.

I think this film has some of the best action scenes in the entire series (Neo's brawl with all the Smiths, the chateau fight, the freeway battle), plus there are some great and memorable new additions to the cast in this film - the Merovingian (French guy), Persephone, the Keymaker (played by the actor who voiced Oogway in the Kung Fu Panda films no less), the Architect. Curious to see what you make of Revolutions, that's definitely the most contentious film in the trilogy so I'll be looking forward to that reaction when it comes

You are the best actor when it comes to reaction videos. Your control of your character’s voice is pitch perfect. Your nonaggressive emotional stance is flawless. Your bullet point pop culture unsure expression of cool thins is hilarious. Your predictable “sage” advice during all the predictable parts are fun. Keep up the scripted AI inspired Miranda Singsesque reaction first reactions. Thanks for fitting us into your life

My friends and I were in high school when this came out and we saw it in theaters. I remember we really liked the Asian dude, because we're Asian lol. Also, I wanna say that the video game (Enter the Matrix) that's tied to this movie came out right at the same time, which we rented and played together. So Matrix hype was at a all-time high. I think it was at this point my friends and I were like, "if they can make movies like this, then they can make a Dragon Ball movie!" Which they eventually did, and it was horrible lol.

Sadly, many, at the time this and even the third film came out in theaters, wasn't met with the same enthusiasm as you or me for this installment in the franchise. Many people trashed it, saying they were inferior to the first. The original film is great because the Wachoski's created something fresh and new at the time, not in it's story, but how they were able to make that "one" story different and feel engaging. I wanted to see it in theaters, but at the time, I was a kid, but did get to see the second film in theaters with my oldest brother who was 18. Really wanted to see the third one in theaters, but couldn't. Anywho, sorry for the tangent, but my teenage self was OBSESSED. There is a series of short films called the Animatrix which fills in the gaps in the lore and leads into the second film. You should definitely see it. Really cool. I'm guessing many people didn't like that what happens in the subsequent sequels undid the first. I, personally, don't think so. Also, they shot these sequels back-to-back, and had a video game Enter the Matrix which fills in the gaps from Naobi's and Ghost's part. Very ambitious, but wasn't completely fulfilled because during production, the actress who plays the Oracle died, Gloria Foster, so, they have a different actress in the third, heads up. They kinda explain why her appearance is different in the video game/kinda touch upon it in the third film. A friend of hers took up the mantle. Also, Trinity actress, Carrie Anne Moss, by the third film's production, was pregnant. I guess keep that in mind if you feel that her physical presence isn't at the same level as the previous 2 films, maybe cut her a little slack. It's not like she doesn't do some butt kicking in the third film because she does. Can't wait to see your reaction to the next installment.

Back when this movie came out, apart from the floaty animations, you couldn't tell that the fight was computerized. On CRT and lower resolution it really looked pretty real in terms of textures.

Just a couple little things, all the cars you see during the highway chase scene are GM models. I would love to know how much GM paid for that product placement. Second, what the architect is describing is programming 101. Every program will buildup flaws over time until it is rebooted or locks. In the event of a lock, you have to reboot from kernel, which in this case is the insertion of "The One" back into the system.
