Of all the reactors I've watched, you're the only one who caught how scary Paul's foresight was.

You had a fantastic grasp on the ramifications of all the powers at play in this story - how Paul by trying to prevent one vision based only on possibilities can inadvertently cause that very thing to happen. Great reaction 👍

43:13 Some folks didn’t understand about Paul. Sure he is a young skinny kid. But he has been trained by Gurney and Duncan since he could hold a blade. Those two guys are legendary swordsmen in their lifetimes. So Paul is already one of the deadliest people in existence…he just hasn’t killed yet.

I actually like that Paul comes off so unassuming in his stature, but is deadly proficient when placed in a fight. It’s get character writing and quite the subversion from the typical protagonist’s “tall and muscular” build.

Power is not size, power is human consciousness. Yeah Dune is all about the limits of the human body and mind. The most important part of Paul's training is from his mother, who taught him total body and mind control. Prana Bindu and the weirding way martial art, which Stilgar mentions Jessica is a practitioner of at the end. Btw, Duncan and Gurney aren't just some swordmasters. They're renowned as the two greatest in the imperium, and Duncan says Gurney beats him 6 times out of 10. But that's for even more detailed character reasons I won't get into if nobody asks.

The Atreides legions are trained by the best in the imperium, and are getting to the point where they can rival even the Sardaukar. What the emperor and Baron Harkonnen do not know, however, is that the fremen are already on par with the Sardaukar. When Paul and his mother teach them the weirding way, the Sardaukar become trivial.

Paul also has Bene Gesserit training from Jessica, who have their own fighting style and powers in reading others. It's not in the movies, but in the books he's also be trained by Thufur Hawat as a mentat, so he's also a human supercomputer

It's not only that Paul hasn't killed yet. All of Paul's fighting training is focused on fighting with shields, because in the empire everyone uses shields. "Fast on the defense, slow on the attack" to be able to penetrate your opponent's shield. Except in the deserts of Arakis, since shields attract the worms. Fremen don't use shields. To the Fremen it looked like Paul was playing with Jamis, while Paul was simply being slow on the attack like he was taught his whole life. He had to adapt to being fast in the attack too, as well as adapt to fight for the kill.

He didnt see the vision of Jamis “helping him”. He saw a vision where Jamis promised to “teach him the ways of the desert” - which he did.

When I went to the theater to watch the David Lynch film 40 years ago, ushers handed out glossaries. So I know how daunting a big info dump can be.

@@michelleneedsahobbythe book describes it as being like a terrain of possible futures. This terrain has metaphorical hills and valleys. If he’s on a hill, he can see many possible futures with great clarity. But sometimes he’s in a valley and some or all of the potential futures are obscured.

And even after Jamis dies in the book Paul can still talk to other possible future versions of him and get advice.

yes jessica as a trained bene gesserit can alter her body chemistry in various ways one of which includes choosing the gender of any child she has, along with The Voice and her fighting style. there are two "prophecies" in dune the one on dune about the lisan al gaib which is completely invented and planted by bene gesserit for it to make use of and the other about the kwisatz haderach isn't so much a prophesy as a eugenics experiment designed to create a male Reverend Mother with the power to see the future clearly.

I’ve said before: the Kwisatz Haderach is product, not prophecy. And the goal is not for him to be their leader, but rather a tool they use to further their agenda. The prophecy of the Lisan Al-Gaib was planted by the Missionaria Protectiva. Versions of this prophecy were planted on many worlds, the goal being that a Bene Gesserit who finds herself in trouble can deliberately play into the prophecy in order to ensure her safety. It was planted long ago, and Lady Jessica knows the original form of the prophecy, but she doesn’t know how it’s evolved in the time since. There’s a number of scenes where she has to get a feel for how the prophecy has changed so that she can properly play into it. We see this happening in her scene with the Shadout Mapes. She’s basically using a very advanced form of cold reading to guess what the Shadout Mapes wants to hear. The book makes it clearer because you can see Jessica’s thought process.

Nice reaction! You picked up on so much. I post this in all the reactions where people question the Jamis vision, but I interpreted it as falling under the category of a dream happening not exactly the way he dreamed it, like he told the Rev. Mother. Jamis very much did teach Paul the ways of the desert: Mercy is for the weak and only the strong survive. This was Paul's last rite of passage as he moves fully into manhood and leaves his boyhood behind, in which he was raised with compassion and kindness. There is no place for those things on Arrakis. (I won't spoil the next film, but in the book this moment is portrayed as the point of no return for how the rest of Paul's story unfolds. It's a critical juncture in his journey.)

@@dondumitru7093I gave this a lot of thought, and I think I know the exact inflection point. It’s when they are in their stillsuits and Paul steps on the drum sand. They have to run as fast as possible to escape the worm. If Jessica tripped, and was killed by the worm, there would have been no real controversy about accepting Paul. Then Stilgar could assign Jamis to teach Paul their ways and look out for him.

46:41 Many of the characters in this series would be transhuman by our standards. They are still considered human but they are further from us than we are to cavemen. Dune takes place over 20,000 years in our future. About 10,000 years prior to this movie, the human race fought a war against Thinking Machines which were highly advanced artificial intelligence. Near the end of that war, the planet Earth was destroyed and AI was outlawed. Without advanced computing, the human race had to evolve to take up the slack. That need for forced breeding is where the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild and the Mentats came from. That’s why Duncan can fight so well despite being mortally wounded. That’s why Bene Gesserit like Jessica can choose the sex of their children and posses the Voice. That’s why Mentats like Thufir Hawat can outthink our greatest supercomputers. Not mentioned in this movie is that Paul also is a potential Mentat.

In the book, Paul underwent the earliest training to become a mentat, but the Harkonnen assault prevented him from completing the training. One of the things I love about Dune, at least in the first book, is that there are no stupid characters. Everyone is highly intelligent and skilled at playing the political game.

@@wackyvorlon Yes Paul had underwent the training portion in which the potential is not aware that they are being prepared to be a Mentat. If memory serves me correctly just before they left for Arrakis Leto told Paul what was going on.

Dune has some of the best worldbuilding I’ve seen. Not just interesting, but the consequences are also *very* carefully thought out. The amount of information cut out for this movie is honestly immense. It was necessary, and Denis Villeneuve IMO made very good choices in what to cut. The movie hews closely enough to the book that you can read the book and it will enrich the experience of the movie. I do highly recommend reading the book if you can, it’s truly excellent. I will add that the Bene Gesserit have developed an extreme degree of control over their bodies, even to the point of being able to choose the sex of their baby. If they ingest poison, with great focus and effort they can even instruct their bodies to create an enzyme that will neutralize it. They are called “witches”, but they have not really harnessed anything supernatural. It appears to be witchcraft to those who are not Bene Gesserit, but the reality is one of carefully applied science.

57:09 Dune is written as a cautionary tale against charismatic messianic figures. Paul is our protagonist but he is not the hero of our story. Sure he is better than his family’s rivals but this is not a simple chosen one story. Dune is the origin story of a conqueror and a tyrant.

Paul was NOT a tyrant. People are misinterpreting his role. He tried very hard to make things right. He was a flawed Hero. But a Hero just the same. He saw what the future could be. And chose the least horrible one. Is still a cautionary tale. But people today interpret what Herbert said to mean something different from what he actually said. Herbert put the burden on the people in the Society. And the quote actually mentioned that it is what happens around the leader that has to be taken with caution. Did not say the leader themselves are the problem. Is a huge difference. Frank Herbert created Paul. He had to make huge choices. Horrible choices. But Paul saved humanity in the long run. And with personal sacrifice most of us would not choose to do. Herbert wrote him that way.

@@technofilejr3401 Well, I was taking the perspective of the surviving Human Race. I would guess they would think fondly upon the person who made their survival possible. Also was thinking of Frank Herbert. He wrote 6 Dune books. They spanned thousands of years. And in the last books, Paul was a revered figure, a "hero". If the Author of the story makes the character a hero. Who am I to disagree.

Fantastic reaction. Your instincts were so on point. Can't wait to see Part 2. To your comments on the books, they are extremely lore heavy and things were left out, but enough detail retained to give a sense of how dense the lore is and maintain the essence of the story.

“Damn the spice!” That line moved me. it feels so rare that we get good dads who love their sons regardless if they choose to be a great leader or greater man. I wonder how Leto would’ve felt about Jessica after she drank the water of life.

Paul's future sense is one of the most fascinating parts of the story, books go reaaaaaly deep on it.

I cannot wait until you react to part two because part two is so conclusive with what is set up in part one. as you know, it is the first book of the series in the movie is broken into two parts. Great reaction. The original book came out in 1965 and it's a big read. You should love part 2, it's even better! As far as I'm concerned this is as close to a perfect sci-fi movie as I can imagine. 👍🤩💙

Love your reaction, you picked up a lot! Some info to add on: The power of the voice is a bene gesserit skill that they are trained to posses, at the same time they are also trained to resist it. Some of Paul’s visions are not certain like Paul being stabbed and Jamis helping him Paul’s prescient power indeed have pros and cons, noticeably it cost and confined him a lot in the later books.

Chalamet (using his last name avoids the discomfort of struggling with his first name) really impresses me in every movie I see him in. I recommend The King (2019) next.

I can tell that you're reaaally gonna enjoy Part 2 and also that you'd like the books. There is an insane amount of intelligence and wisdom in them, about all kinds of things, some of which the movies don't go into as much or not at all. Which is understandable, considering how dense of a material the Dune book is.

Very good. For the first time, you're a lot better than most people.

It's interesting that you noted how there are no bad effects shots in Dune. While both movies have a sizable budget for sure, there have been movies with a much larger production budget behind them, where the effects do not look as good. The reason for this lies with the director. Denis Villeneuve has been a huge fan of the Dune books since his teenage years. He has probably imagined what this world would look like for a few decades. And as a director, Denis is incredibly clear in his vision. Director of other big budget movies with a lot of VFX shots sometimes have absolutely no idea, what they want things to actually look like. This often leads to VFX artists either having to do effects that aren't great looking/don't fit the film or they change their mind last minute, when it doesn't look as they want it to. Which in turn leads to the VFX artists sometimes having little time to completely change the look of the effects. With Denis this never seems to be a problem. He knows exactly what he wants things to look like.

Let's go Part 2 is even better Lisan Al-Gaib will point the way. Good reaction as Written

With Paul's visions, the future is dictated by the decisions he is forced to make. There are hundreds of paths but the choices and circumstances he makes determines his future. In one path Jamie is his friend and mentor. In another Jamie is not his friend. The author Frank Herbert is showing probabilities, not predictions. it can also be called the butterfly effect theory: the world is deeply interconnected, such that one small occurrence can influence a much larger complex system. Which you can see more of when you watch Dune 2. There's a reason they call Dune science fiction for adults. . George Lucas drew most of his inspiration for Star Wars from reading Dune.

Some additional non-spoiler lore : * The story is pretty much set on our timeline roughly 24,000 years into the future. All the characters you see are humans, slightly evolved due to various significant events before Paul's saga. House Atriedes can actually trace their history back to House Atreus of ancient Greek civilization & later Rome as well * Earth is referred to as Terra and has been sadly lost to history after it was struck by a meteor and designated as a National park millennia after humans left it * Roughly 10,000 years before Paul's story, there was a holy war against the "Thinking Machines" or basically AI, aftermath of which resulted in the complete explusion & abandonment of any artificial intelligent technology, machinery, weapons or equipment across the known universe. It was referred to as the "Butlerian Jihad" and paved the way for how human species would evolve & adapt without the luxury of thinking machines * The Bene Gesserit sisterhood, Space Navigators/Guild & Mentats (human computers) were all developed and established in and around this turbulent time period resulting in the formation of the current feudal imperium with an Emperor and various houses with Dukes, Barons & Counts. Various historical accounts were lost, Religious & conservative beliefs started to become the norm. This is the reason why even though the story is set way ahead into the future, it still feels ancient * Arrakis used to be an abundant Water planet until some unknown group before all the AI conflict period decided to infest the planet with Sand Trouts, which later evolved into the Giant Sand worms. The main source of Spice are sandworms & needless to say they are very vital to the ecology of Arrakis. Fremen only arrived on Arrakis only 3500/4000 years before Paul. They are descendants of the Zen-Sunni people, who were these nomadic tribes that constantly traveled to & from various planets until they were settled into Arrakis

And the previous, more recent MI movies treated their female characters with such respect that their writing in the 7th one took me by surprise. I'm really hoping it'll be some sort of switch up situation. I feel like they might've even been foreshadowing things not being as they seem, it in the 7th movie, so we'll see how it goes? But yess, exactly, maybe she's undercover or something, somehow.

Yeah, there’s a lot of lore. I really do recommend reading Dune and Dune Messiah. I love both the books and movies equally, Denis Villeneuve did alter some things, but for the most part they don’t ruin my enjoyment of the movies. Love your reactions as always, I can’t wait for your take on the second one. I can just imagine how you feel about Paul’s mother in that one.

😭 Jessica certainly is something else

If you go back and watch again early in the film, when Paul is being examined by the Reverend Mother. At one point before he is checked by the Doctor, Paul is walking in a hallway and Paul adjusts his collar, where the poison needle would be - perhaps this was in reaction to a vision where he was stabbed with the needle. And just after the door is opened to the meeting with the Reverend Mother, Paul is walking forward, hearing voices, while looking down towards his feet, but then it is shown that Paul has not yet gone into the room and Jessica speaks to him. Paul is receiving these visions of things that are coming, and of course for Paul, the issue is that the visions are not clear, he can't fully interpret them, nor does he know how things connect, he doesn't know which will come to pass or even which might never even get close to happening. (If you enjoyed this movie, I would highly recommend another film by the same director, "Arrival".)

About the Jamis vision thing, I like to think that the visions he saw were based on what really happens but he sees them "blurry" - the vision was basically that Jamis teaches Paul something about life. But he saw Jamis explaining it in the vision, but in reality it was a much more visceral lesson

29:11 if you recall Dr.Yueh had a diamond of his forehead. He carved a diamond into the chair near the kit so they had gear to survive.

You are quite right about Dune being a very dense story. Even with all the plot lines They left a good third to have one half of the book out. You would need a six-hour mini-series to cover the book in it's entirety. So I have long been resigned to them cutting certain characters and plots out. And they did a lot of that. For instance that guy that's a human calculator had a whole plot arc trying to find the spies and thinking it was Jessica. Dr Yui had a whole arc where he was plotting to set up the capture of the Duke Leto Chini in the book is Dr Kines daughter ( Kines was a man in the book I'm glad they switched the character to a female it works perfectly. So yeah they had to cut a lot and look out. I think they kept the spirit and essence of the story intact. I saw that you were trying to keep up with a lot of the lore And it is quite difficult I've had to read the book two times to fully understand what was going on. Overall a very good reaction I can't wait to see your reaction to part two.

I would recommend the audiobook , there are two very good versions online . The Audible is the Best .

Frank Herbert's book Dune was released in 1965. George Lucas was inspired by it for his STAR WARS movies."The Voice" in DUNE & the "Jedi Mind Trick" in STAR WARS is 1 example. The world of Dune takes place some 20,000 yrs into the future, where "thinking" computers/AI is outlawed. Spice, also known as melange, influences every aspect of this world. It enhances the mind. The Kwisatz Haderach is supposed to be male. U know, Paul is just coming into his abilities during this time, & he is only around 15yrs old. The Reverend Mother believes it is too soon for The One. Reverend Mother is what a head Catholic nun is called usually by other nuns or another name is Mother Superior. The Bene Gesserit is an order of women who can control not only their minds but also their bodies They seem almost superhuman. That is why Jessica was able to select what gender her child will be. Jessica loved Leto so much that she gave him a son even tho she was ordered to only have girls. Other examples of enhancements due to spice r: The older gentleman whose eyes rolled into the back of his head, he is a Mentat. Mentats r basically human calculators, & they also can give u percentages of probability. Dr. Yueh, a Suk physician, had the ability thru his touch to provide a health examination. The thing about Dune is everyone is basically human just different factions & Noble Houses on the different planets. O, the 2nd book is called Messiah. I read several of the books years ago so only remember bits & pieces. I don't know if my brain could handle a re-read of the books. It's a lot! I really enjoyed your reaction & commentary.😊👍

Dr. Yueh knew he could not safe his wife and that he will die. He did it to revenge her and using Leto was the only way he saw to have a chance to kill the Baron.

you are right the visions can be allegorical in nature or he is seeing possible futures, so in a sense Jamis did teach Paul the way of the Fremen

Jessica was supposed to bear an Atreides daughter to wed to Harkonnen male heir. This would end the vendetta between the families and eventually produce the Kwisatz Haderach. But Jessica loved Leto so much that she gave him what he desired...and here we are. Instead of a carefully engineered political outcome with a smooth transfer of power to a fully realized and trained supermind, Paul is a wild card thrown into the crucible of a genocidal war with access to millions of fanatical warriors, all the equals of the Sardaukar, all driven by religious frenzy and murderous hatred.

Hey Michelle. These are amazing movies. I could say so much about this but it would be so many pages. I keep my bigger comment for the part 2. Take care.

Leto and Jessica are not married because she is not noble born and he was keeping his option’s open for a political marriage. They were really in love though (which is the main reason Jessica chose to have a boy).

i really recommend reading the book or listening to one of the newer audiobook releases

these movies epitomize the line tough times create strong men.... also good leaders never want to lead is something the modern world can learn. this is in contrast to as you said 'he doesnt get to choose'. If only more people realized that at times what you want doesnt matter the greater good is more imporytant. leaders of yesteryear understood this, not anymore. this is evident in part 2
