Hello everyone! We’re getting into the second half of the “Dune Part Two reaction” today! “Dune” has utterly captivated me to my core. I’m obsessed with the story of Paul Atreides. While “reacting” to “Dune” I couldn’t escape the feeling of dread over what actions Paul might take as the movie progressed, but as I’m “watching” I feel for the conflict Paul Atreides is trapped in. Paul’s love for Chani, Lady Jessica’s desires to bring forth the Kwisatz Haderach, vengeance for Leto, and liberation for the Fremen are all swirling inside Paul. It’s maelstrom of pain, fear and justice that grips Paul and throughout the movie Timothee Chalamet nails every nuance to these emotions. Timothee Chalamet does such a great job making Paul Atreides transformation after he drinks the Water of Life believable. Rebecca Ferguson brings such a creep factor to Lady Jessica that underlies her strength both as a Bene Gesserict and Paul Atreides’ mother. Zendaya brings both strength and vulnerability to Chani as she fights for the liberation and rights of the Fremen, but also while falling in love with Paul. Chani’s heartbreak at the end was palpable and the shipper in me hopes Paul and Chani find a way to reconcile. Anyways, thank you all so much for watching my “reaction” to “Dune Part 2” and I hope you all enjoyed my commentary at the end. Take care everyone!

Timothee Chalamet blew me away with his performance. He was incredible throughout the entire movie of course, but his portrayal of Paul's transformation after drinking the Water of Life was phenomenal. I'm now a fan and plan on doing more reactions to his movies on here! So glad to see how much you LOVED and the movie and invested the time to thoroughly absorb these movies. I also agree that Chamattes' performance AFTER drinking the water is oscar worthy. I think Rebecca Ferguson (Jessica) and Austin Butler (Fayde Rautha) will both get supporting oscar nominations

I love how much you became hooked by both the story and the performances. The Water of Life has a profound effect over both the rate of growth of the fetus but also virtually makes Alia a Reverend Mother in the womb with all the same knowledge mom has. You nailed it when you said, experiencing what the Water of Life gives you, can't not change who you are, for the exact reasons you mentioned, you also become a vessel of all the knowledge and experiences of all previous reverend mothers. Paul has that but with a twist. The movie doesn't go into it but a male drinking the water of life has a different experience because male genetics unlock different experiences than female, and this twist is what gives the Kwisatz Haderach the extra power the Bene Gesserit wish to control. So because of those experiences everyone who survives the Water of Life must be changed to their very core. The term for if that person loses control over all those personalities now within them is called abomination. I simplifying a lot but that's the gist and weight of what's going on with Paul, Jessica, and Alia. Lastly, keep in mind this is still feudalism albeit over 20K years in the future, and love doesn't mean much in the upper echelons, exactly as in our history. This is typically a type of business transaction. So when folks say, Paul betrayed Chani's love to live happily every after with Irulan, it's such a fairytale. This is a power play pure and simple. Historically a marriage can be a loveless transaction, just as much as deep profound love can exist when 2 people are not married, like in Leto and Jessica's case. (She was his concubine) Thank you for an amazing reaction. You're take was so spot on. Great job!

It’s entirely possible that Jessica didn’t know who her father was. Remember, she was raised by the Bene Gesserit and part of their breeding program. Often this was done with secrecy to mask true parentage.

Chani did ask 'Who will our next oppressors be?' in the beginning and arter the title card it immediately showed Caladan and Paul's face. So yeah, we had the answer from the first minutes of the movie. Stilgar did an excellent job at being both comedic with his fanaticism and then making you go 'oh... oh no wait this is actually a really terrifying thing' His character really highlghts both the absurdity and danger of fanaticism and cult of personality. I so look forward to Villeneuve's take on Dune Messiah.

2:10 Giedi Prime orbits a black sun most of its output isn’t in the visible light spectrum. They filmed this sequence infrared cameras. The Atreides warrior fighting Feyd isn’t Doctor Yueh. This is Lt. Lanville who was in a few scenes in the first movie. He is played by Roger Yuan the fight coordinator for the series.

Behind the scenes, the costume department didn't realize that the gladiator scene would be filmed with IR cameras, and even more significantly, they had no EXPERIENCE with IR cameras. So of course, the costumes were delivered and then when filmed under IR, parts of the costumes which were supposed to be black, and which were black in normal light, showed up as white in IR. And had to be returned to the costume department for urgent corrections.

57:37 Yep you could hear his father Leto’s influence in some of the ways Paul spoke to people. Leto was an honorable, charismatic and compassionate leader who valued people. His goodness of character drew people to him and made them fiercely loyal. The Bene Gesserit sent him a spy/concubine and he flipped her to his side by just being himself. That’s why the Mohiam called him defiant and dangerous. If he was that charismatic as a Duke imagine how he could screw up their plans as Emperor? Now all of their plots just put Leto’s son on the throne. 😂🤣

Your post analysis is so profound!! Thank you for this! I'm a big Dune fan: I've read the books, and I have seen the 1984 film. I absolutely LOVE the Villeneuve adaptations. Like you, I can't even count how many times I've seen these films. As I was watching your analysis, I just kept thinking, "She's GOOD!" You really understand the lore and the major themes so well. And I love your appreciation for the film. 100% with you: the complexity and duality of the characters, the parallels, the performances, the writing--all so good. And it is great to see an analysis that isn't shallow and actually embraces the conflict and tension that we feel about the prophecy (propaganda), about Paul & Chani's relationship, about Jessica. The lack of choice/control/agency that many of the characters experience is tragic. I swear, there will be books and classes about Villeneuve's films in the years to come. Can't wait for Dune: Messiah! Thanks again for taking the time to create this reaction and analysis.

The Bene Gesserit had good reason to be confident about being able to control the politics of the imperium. They’d been doing it for thousands of years . Their miscalculation was trusting Jessica to have a daughter. Instead, she had a son who couldn’t be controlled.

  • @bernbsy
    @bernbsyАй бұрын

Jessica’s decision to have a son instead of a daughter in defiance of the Bene Gesserit sets into motion a path that determines the survival of humans and it was based on her love for Duke Leto who wanted a son not as much her desire to produce the Kwisatz Haderach. You really get the gist of Dune. Recommend that you read Frank Herbert’s 6 books. It get’s really freaky yet deep.

42:10 A primary way that the Bene Gesserit control politics in the empire is by steering the alliances between the houses, and male children are the key to that. Leto was to be given only daughters, because without a son and a clear strong heir, Leto's house would be at a disadvantage and held in check. It's actually why Leto and Jessica never married - marriage for Leto was reserved for a political alliance with another house. But Leto wanted a son very much, and Jessica loved Leto very much, so in a moment of weakness, Jessica gave Leto a son. Edit: And Chani and Jessica are the same, both concubines to powerful leaders, but not wives. Influencing from the shadows, not exercising public power. In Dune Part Two, it is a departure from the books to have this break between Paul and Chani.

Hi Michelle. I read the books in 1973. Saw the 1984 film by David Lynch and the mini series of Dune and the Children of Dune. I felt like Paul after having drank the Water of Life, knowing the future, how it all ends. But the choices that Denis Villeneuve took, I can see several ways that he could take the story. I don’t see any ‘narrow path’ that could lead to a good one. It all seems hopeless and tragic! For the first time with Dune, Villeneuve has left me ‘blind’. I have no idea what the future will bring. Scary and exciting.

I think the most crucial moment to understand all Paul’s motives after he drinks the water of life is all in the scene where after chani leaves the temple after slapping him is the moment when he is sat on the steps talking to his mum. It’s so amazing and really explains all his motives to me included with his defeated and then accepting expressions. I think when he states I seen all the paths and only a narrow path will lead to victory I think he means the only way I can keep our people (fremen) alive is this one path, which includes everything that happens from that moment on in his story. I believe he sacrifices himself to save chani from more pain and death and to give fremen a chance at living as everyone wants to wipe them out to have the spice for themselves. He only decided to go south after the bombings from the Harkonnans started and he was cradling chani as she sobbed in his shoulder and he was concerned all his new followers and family were going to die because they wouldn’t abandon him. I can’t imagine the heart break and mental torture he’s been going through. I also think that when the fremen took him and his mother in they were refugees fleeing a gencide of his people and they rescued them and then he earns his way up the totem pole and rightly so I believe. He proved he’s a good leader, smart, affectionate and cares for his new people and new family. I genuinely believe he is reincarnated as fremen prophet but he had to die for that. And I think the death was of who he used to to be his old self as just being atreides. To his new role where he will lead the rest of any surviving atreides refugees and fremen.

Timmy is versatile. I'm not at all a musical guy but I begrudgingly watched Wonka and was blown away. Very charming, very delightful, the songs were clever, and of course much credit to the director who also was behind Paddington 1 and 2 which I haven't seen but understand are well loved. The other big ones for him are Call me by your Name, The Lovely Bones, Beautiful Boy (I've seen none of those) and Little Women (which I saw and loved), also with FloPu. I also saw him in The King which IIRC was a retelling of Henry V by Shakespeare. And that one in particular I think led to the War Council speech in Dune Part 2. The guy has range and I respect it. As for Lady Jessica, she was great in this. Terrifying. She really did a great job in Doctor Sleep (check out the Director's Cut of that). It's a sequel to The Shining and she is once again a fierce force of nature. One thing I notice about her is how she whispers with dramatic effect.

Love your reaction! Glad you love this world as much as I do. Some tidbits bits for you. There are humans that have evolved over time without machines. The Bene Gesserit are women but have been breeding to produce a male version. Jessica was training Paul in this way. The mentats (Thufir) are human computers. Paul was also being trained as a mentat but this is not revealed in the movie. The guild is another faction that can do space travel but not mentioned in the movie a whole lot. So Paul was trained as Bene Geserit and mentat.

Jessica drank the poison and saw she was Harkonnen, and so is Paul. How would Fremen react, had they not been convinced he is their Messiah? They don't give a shit now, but what would the implications be otherwise? She's been trying to protect him the whole time. Lisan al Gaib is a convenient story, sure, but Kwizats Haderach is not a story. How did Jessica quote it in the first movie? "A mind, powerful enough to bridge space and time". That's him, even his visions tell him that. By getting Fremen convinced he is their Messiah, he gets best warriors in the world that would never betray him. He executes all Harkonnen rulers - kills the Baron, asks Gurney to kill Rabban, and kills Feyd Ratha. By blood, he is the only remaining ruler. He is also Atreides, his children will be Atreides. Centuries-long war against Harkonnens is finished. He then gets the Emperor to "approve" him as the new Emperor, and marries his daughter. He can reshape Arrakis now, give prosperity to it, the ocean in his vision, the Green Paradise.Holy War is a small price to pay for that. He also can command Sardaukar warriors now, in addition to Fremen. Complete advantage. Cudos to Jessica for defying everything she knew. She fell in love with Leto and decided to give him a son. If it was a girl, she'd be sent to Benne Gesserit from birth, never knowing her father or any other family, just like Jessica was, and she'd eventually be a concubine to psychotic Feyd Rautha. Instead, her son remains at his father's side as his heir, shows signs of immense intelligence and higher power, is capable of Benne Gesserit abilities. Good for you, Jessica.

I get what Villeneuve was aiming for with making the Harkonnens look so freaky. He wanted to get across how different they were to regular humans. They're essentially an alien race. They remind me of the forerunners from Prometheus and Alien Covenant. They're inhuman, brutal and thrive on violence and conflict. I think if they were presented as regular humans I don't think it would've been as effective. They would've just come across as a more violent version of the Atreides.

Really interesting that you don't feel like Jessica protected Paul. From one angle I can see that, but Jessica's choices were based on "do or die." She did as Leto asked, and protected him with Bene Gesserit manipulation. It was pretty much her only option. No telling where Villeneuve is going to take the next film, since this one has a few substantial differences from the book, but if we knew what Paul knows after taking the water, we would understand that even though his choices bring about terrible atrocities, they are still the best options he has. The Lisan-al-Gaib worship has already been set into motion, and the holy war is unavoidable regardless of whether he orders it or not. He really is a tragic hero, trapped by fate. But yeah, I think this film really highlights how much Jessica has bought into the Bene Gesserit mindset of being a perpetual manipulator, regardless of any other moral concerns.

In addition in Dune part 1, Leto asked Jessica not to protect Paul as a mom. But as a Bene Gesserit. She was teaching him everything she knew to keep him alive. Then she went into manipulative momma bear mode to keep him alive from the onslaught of the Harkonnens, the Emperor & Rev Mother. She fully believed in the KH. And implanting religion for centuries. Jessica went further & used forced trickery on the Freeman to convert them into following Paul.

In the book, and in the David Lynch film, and in the sci-fy tv series it's her, a 3 year-old kid who kills the Baron Vladimir Harkonen, with the poisoned needle. This becomes a problem later on in "Dune Messiah" and "Children of Dune" (the 2nd and thrid books respectivelly). By the way, Dennis is planing to adapt Dune Messiah to close the character arc of Paul. Plus, Dune Messiah is just one third the size of the original book Dune

29:24 There are three character rich conversations from the book are missing from the showdown scene with the Emperor. 1) Thufir Hawat (the older light skinned brother from the first movie) Duke Leto’s Mentat advisor actually survived the Fall of House Atreides. The Harkonnens captured him and forced him to work for them. In secret despite being brutalized constantly, Thufir was still loyal to House Atreides. So when he found out that Gurney was still alive, he started feeding Gurney information to hurt the Harkonnen's spice trade. In this final scene, Thufir is given a poison needle to jab Paul with. Instead of betraying Paul he stabs his own hand with it. Thufir lives long enough to stand in front of Paul and address him as “My Duke”. It is a bittersweet moment for both of them as Thufir was like a grandfather to Paul. Thufir died happy to see Paul live to avenge his father and reestablish House Atreides. He had served Paul's grandfather Paulus Atreides and then his father Leto Atreides. So with his last breath Thufir let Paul know "I'm still your loyal man now and for always". As soon as Thufir dies, Paul stands up, wipes away his tears and calls out Feyd Rautha. He wanted to make sure everyone responsible for the death of his father and teachers would get it. Denis Villanueve did film this final scene but left it on the cutting room floor. Steven M. Henderson who played Thufir Hawat gave an interview about being disappointed that his work was left out of the second movie. 2) After Paul defeats Feyd, the Emperor Shaddam asks his best friend Count Hasimir Fenring to challenge Paul. Fenring is the husband of Margot Fenring the Bene Gesserit who got impregnated by Feyd. Fenring despite his mild manner appearance is the Emperor's personal hitman. Fenring is almost a Kwitzach Haderach like Paul and has been trained by his wife Margot in Bene Gesserit ways. So with all of those skills Fenring could potentially defeat Paul in single combat But when Fenring and Paul looked at one another across the throne room, they experienced a shared moment of kinship. Fenring sees in Paul all he could have become had he not been born a genetic eunuch. Because of this birth defect Fenring can't father children with his beautiful wife or any woman. Paul also sees what Fenring is seeing in that moment and conveys back to the Count not pity but brotherhood. After that shared moment, Fenring turns to his best friend Emperor Shaddam and says "No". This was the first time that Shaddam was ever turned down by Fenring and he is shook to his core. Denis Villanueve also filmed this final scene but left it on the cutting room floor. Actor Tim Blake Nelson who played Count Fenring has also given interviews about his heartbreak with being left out. 3) Paul and Jessica letting Chani know that the marriage to Princess Irulan is merely political. They explain that Paul will never spend time with Irulan, show her any passion or sire children with her. The Imperial marriage is all for show. Paul basically marries Irulan then goes home to Chani. They never mistreat the Princess but everyone knows that she is Empress in name only. David Lynch the director of the 1984 version of Dune actually filmed both the Thufir and Chani scenes and they can be found on KZread.

So an over hour 45 overall for Doom 2 ... THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT. ❤ Girl you are my soul sister when it comes to how you take Paul's choice to lead them from Paradise. Loved your response to Chini's being forced into the role from the prophecy.😢❤ 12:05 There is an explanation from the book, the Jamis he sees is from a different timeline, he can't control this.

Leto wanted a son, and Jessica was his concubine who fell in love with him, and gave him the son he wanted. Leto did not marry her to keep potential alliances open. Jessica was not supposed to fall in love, and the Bene Gesserit referred to this in the future as "the Jessica crime". Yes, Alia Atreides (the baby) grows up to be almost as powerful as Paul. After the holy war, she is worshipped across the Imperium like Paul, as a god. She even does what you're not supposed to do as someone with her powers and controls her aging.

It's been the same oppressors. Jessica and Paul are half Harkins notice when Paul went to the temple, he had a black cape. Alia of the knife (Paul's sister) showed terraforming arrakis what happens with worms and water. Those who can control a thing have true power.

Most people missed this but the reason Paul sees Chani Burned is because at that moment if he stayed north she would not leave south and she would have been burned by Feyd instead of her friend. It is another reason why Paul had to go south even though it leads to the holy war. Its kind of a fucked up story actually. Paul is not the good guy its a warning.

First and foremost, I'm speaking to the movie universe. Paul takes the water, and can see all futures, all at once. Clearly. It's no longer fragments which confuse him, or which he could misconstrue. And then Paul says, "...and in so many of those futures our enemies prevail. But I do see a way. There is a narrow way through." He does *not* say, "I see lots of possible futures where our enemies don't win, lemme pick one. Eeny meeny meiny mo." Paul becomes a slave to his own prescience. He's the most powerful person in the universe, yet he has the least freedom. He must claim leadership of the Fremen, despite understanding what that sets into motion across the galaxy, or let them be wiped out by the Harkonnens. He must use the atomics on the shield wall and not the Sardaukar themselves. He must take the punishment to draw Feyd in so he could kill him. He must become Emperor in order to put himself in position to protect the Fremen. He must marry Irulan as a way to legitimize taking the Lion throne. He must unleash the Fremen, despite understanding how that also unleashes their new religion, in order to remove the threat hanging over Arrakis after Paul takes power (remember, all the houses had military forces in orbit) and solidify his place as Emperor. You can argue, "this can't be what is best for humanity," but then Paul never promised to do that. Over and over, what does he say? He's loyal to Chani, he's loyal to the Fremen, he's loyal to House Atreides. There is a sacrifice to be made for the good of all humanity, but it doesn't address your concerns (if anything it would make them worse), and Paul refuses to make it.

Very astute observation of the movie. I can tell you have actually watched the movie multiple times and not just "watched " it. I wanna quickly point something interesting out about Lady Jessica. Whether she actually cared about Paul over the Kwisatz Haderach is an interesting subject. There are multiple moments where she does seem to care about Paul Atreides, her son. One of them is in Dune 1 where she askes the Fremen for help and tells Stilgar "Paul needs to get off world". She knows that the Bene Gesserit prepared Arrakis to be the place where Paul would become the Kwisatz Haderach so why should she want to protect Paul by going back to Caladan with him if she didn't care about Paul. That's the most obvious moment. Another one is at the end of Dune 2, which is after she drank the water of life and therefore should theoretically care way less about Paul and way more about the Kwisatz Haderach, which seems to be the case. All she does from after drinking the water is to ensure Paul becomes the Kwisatz Haderach. There is one moment at the end tho. After Paul gets stabbed, she looks shocked. And not because the Kwisatz Haderach is about to die, no. That is a worried look from a mother to her kid. Also after Paul wins the fight, Jessica has tiers in her eyes while looking relieved. In that moment, I don't see one bit of the Reverend Mother in her. That was 100% Jessica.

18:53 It’s true. Vladimir Harkonnen is Jessica’s father. In the book Paul revealed this to Jessica before either one of them took the Water of Life. I guess Denis Villanueve wanted a big plot twist for the movie. According to a Dune prequel novel, Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is Jessica’s mother. Some Dune fans don’t accept this. I do accept it as the book was written by Frank Herbert’s son Brian using his dad’s notes.

Dune is politics. As Jessica wasn’t wife, Chani couldn’t be either. The moment he decided to be emperor he chose Irulan. At least for the appearance. But who will be remembered by history? That’s a lesson also. Chani wasn’t this.. “angry” in the book all the time. But it’s a great choice to show an opinion. As for Alia. That left out the time jump, so she should be a little girl alongside her brother. Not that important tho… she is a horror baby anyway this does the trick. As for what path Paul sees? The wound he gets from Feyd. That’s the narrow path. Now you see why we love these type of epic fantasy and sci-fi books. You have Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Sandman and this on screen.. (ok Game of Thrones is not finished, Songs of Ice and Fire is waiting for 12 years…. 👀 we are looking at you George…) There are some others where these came from. Joe Abercrombie is on point with Rebecca Ferguson with his book, Best Served Cold… Brandon Sanderson is almost ready with his contract on his book series Mistborn, and Henry Calvill is the biggest fan of his, literally called him to be part of any adaptation he has. And so on… and now Neuromancer the cyberpunk base novel is coming to Apple TV from 1984. Good bye Matrix new movie.
