The Lisan al-Gaib! For not being much of a science fiction girl you're doing a pretty good job. I've read literally over a thousand science fiction books. Dune is probably one of the most science fiction most complex stories I've ever read. Good job on catching numerous details like the connection between crying vomiting and collecting the water from the dead. I really enjoyed your reaction. I first read it in about 1976 when I was about 16. And I've been waiting for a movie adaptation of this book since then. I'd long ago come to the conclusion that you can't fit the whole book in a motion picture. Cuts and changes would have to be made. But this is the version that seems to be the closest spiritually to the book.

Biss, Denis Villeneuve rewrote the relationship of Paul, Chani and Jessica from that of the book. From the 1984 Dune by David Lynch, after Paul took the hand of Princess Irulan he turned to Chani and said, “The Princess shall have no more than my name…no child of mine, nor touch, nor softness of glance, nor instant of desire. THIS is my promise to you, MY LOVE.” In an instant, both Chani AND Irulan become tragic figures. Jessica then consoles Chani, “Think on it, Chani. WE who carry the name of concubines, history will call us WIVES!” The 1984 Dune had no continuation. I have no idea what Villeneuve has planned for the future because he changed the way “it was written”!

"Dune - Messiah" will be the Final Part. Paul "Muad'Dib" Atreides has ruled as Emperor for 12 years. By accepting the role of messiah to the Fremen, he has unleashed a jihad which has conquered most of the known universe, but is powerless to stop the lethal excesses of the religious juggernaut he has created.

46:18 In the books, Chani and Paul were together for over 3 years by the time this battle took place. She had his son Leto who was killed by the Sardaukar. Also Chani and Jessica were working together to help Paul ascend. They were very respectful to one another. So she knew Paul might have to marry someone else for political reasons. At one point Jessica re-evaluated her life choices. She realized that she and Leto robbed themselves of happiness by not marrying each other. So Jessica actually advised Paul to forget about politics and marry Chani. But don’t get it twisted despite the marriage, Paul only loves Chani. He won’t be giving the Princess Irulan the time of day. He marries her but he lives with Chani far from her.

When you can see the future in perfect clarity, your humanity more or less has to disappear. What ever Paul feels for Chani is irrelevant. Not because he doesn't love her anymore, but because making the wrong choice can lead to galaxy wide catastrophy. I get the anger, the choice he made *in front* of Chani is heartless. Paul knew this would happen. Remember, he said he was afraid of losing her if he went south and people would die. He didn’t want any of this to happen, but she wanted him to go, as did everyone else. Everything he looked to for guidance told him to go, you can’t be mad a him for that. You can’t fight destiny, and once he reached that point, there was only one path to follow that leads towards accomplishing his goals, the only one where they survive. And that’s what he did. In the book though, Paul and Chani came to an understanding. Just as Jessica and Leto (his parents) weren’t married, they were still very much lovers, and that’s what they would be. He repeated he will love her as long as he breathes several times, it isn’t a lie. A loveless political marriage or death for all of them.

@33:00 - There are over twenty Dune books, however, only the first six were written by the original author, Frank Herbert before he died. I think one of his children wrote (or ghost wrote) some and then a bunch of other people. I read the first three as a teenager and they were EPIC. Planning or reading all six Herbert books again as soon as I finish my current book. I kind of remember Dune (at least the first three books) as being the LOTR of science fiction for me.} [SPOILER SPOILER] - Biss, don't lose sleep over Paul's marriage to the princess. It is a marriage in name only. Things are not over between Paul and Chani. There is one big difference between the book and this film. In the book, Paul's sister is born before the end and is walking around as a three year old child with a full adult mind and full Bene-Gesserit abilities. His sister actually kills the Baron rather than Paul in the book. This is accurate in the 1984? Dune film. (SUBSCRIBE!!!) - I'm dying... 🤣 Lisan-Bissfix!! As it is written!

You are correct. Frank's son Brian along with Kevin J. Anderson (known mostly for writing Star Wars extended universe novels) wrote 17 Dune books starting in 1999 with Dune: House Atreides 14 years after Frank wrote Dune: Chapterhouse in 1985. As for the original 6, if I may make a suggestion, check out the Dune audiobooks via Audible (if you have a subscription of course). They are really good and often have more than one person doing character voices so it almost has an old radio drama feel to it. I noticed personally that I noticed things I had missed before from reading it as those books can get pretty dense in spots and it all can kind of bleed together.

"It's raining men!" And they say it never rains on Arrakis. As for the books. There are only 6 books in the original series by Frank Herbert. He was beginning work on book 7, more writing an outline, maybe a few chapters of a first draft, but he passed away before he could complete it. So in Frank's original books the series ends somewhat on a cliffhanger or at the very least with unanswered questions. His son, Brian Herbert, along with sci-fi author Kevin J. Anderson (known mostly for writing Star Wars novels) wrote a ton of books (17 if memory serves me right) in the Dune universe going as far back as the founding of the entire Dune universe Empire, the beginning of the Bene Gesserit, and the Fremen coming to Arrakis for the first time 10,000 years before any of this up to stuff right before this and in between Frank's books . However, let's just say those two are no Frank Herbert. Not even close. But it's not bad, it just never reaches the highs Frank's book do. It's just something with a feel closer to Star Wars than Frank's Dune. Much more "Space Opera" than Political, Cultural, and Action Sci-Fi like this is. Hope that helps answer your question.

Although I enjoyed the film, I was disappointed that their restructuring of the story, having Chani leave in anger, required them to leave out one of the best lines in the book. In the book, Jessica explains to Chani that the marriage to the emperor's daughter is necessary to bring peace out of the war. And that Chani would be officially a concubine, just as she herself was. She then says, "Do you see that haughty princess over there? They say she has pretensions of a literary nature. Let us hope she takes joy in such things. For she will never feel love, nor touch from her husband. As for you and I, though we bear the title of Concubine, history will call us Wives." One of the best lines in the book.

Yet despite the fact that they altered events from the book, it actually made the film more authentic to the overall meaning behind the entire saga that Frank Herbert was trying to communicate. More "accuate" adaptations have given us an ending which seems to be quite a heroic, happy ending. But the events of the next books show that not to be the case and that is what Herbert was trying to say - beware of messiahs. So by being slightly inaccurate to the first book, it became a far more authentic adaptation of the saga. Authenticity trumps accuracy every time

Yeah, the original story is not "woke enough" for today's Hollywood... Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie a lot and Zandaya did an outstanding job in giving much more personality to a character that in the book is very important, but mostly in a supporting role, almost never taking the spotlight. But the issue is that the relationship between Chani and Paul in the book is much more "adult" than in the movie, even though the characters are much younger. And part of the maturity of their relationship manifests itself through Chani recognizing that Paul is a man whose choices will impact the destiny and the lives of hundreds of billions of people in the galaxy. As personal and intense as the romantic relationship between the two might be, it can't overshadow the responsibility Paul is invested with when it comes the time to make political decisions. I don't know how many people that didn't read the book have realized that Paul's hesitation in taking control of the Fremen was caused by the knowledge that by doing so he would unleash a jihad that would lead to more than 30 billions dead across the known galaxy...

Nice reaction ! you asked for it. original book serie from Frank Herbert, 1963-1985, 6 books, the two movies is the first book. His son, Brian Herbert, with Kevin J Anderson (a very good Star wars book writer) continue the books serie with two more books ending the story, using ntoes from his father. After that they wrote prequels explaining much more the Dune universe. So you have 22 books plus some short stories.

In the book, Chani accepts the fact that Paul needs to marry the Princess as a means of gaining power - and, more importantly, as a means of saving humanity. Remember, he can now glimpse into the future and he sees that humanity is doomed. The only way for him to avert that is by following a narrow path and unfortunately, that path first leads to a holy war which kills billions. But even though he took Irulan as his bride, he refuses to lie with her. It is purely political and is completely loyal to Chani. This concept of taking a concubine rather than a wife runs throughout the books - Jessica was Leto's concubine as he needed to leave the possibility to form political alliances through marriage open, but he never did. Now, if Chani is OK with the marriage in the book, why did they change it you might ask? To prevent Paul becoming emperor being perceived as an entirely good thing. And that was the point of the books, the message is "beware of messiahs". But this message is not fully apparent in the first film. So ironically, while they might have changed aspects of the story from the book, the theme and the original message of the whole saga is more on point than any previous adaptations. You're not supposed to feel happy about Paul's choice but you need to realise he didn't do it because he was being a "typical guy". It was what needed to happen

I LOVE to watch how EVERYBODY freaking out about political marriage of Paul with princess Irulan. XDDD In feodal society is norm, if you're born in rich family you must save your proposal as extremely valuable asset in diplomacy acts. ALSO, Paul's mother wasn't his father's WIFE, she was his legal concubine, in Dune Universe this status of woman means that she have the title and her children will be legal inheritors, and of course that means that SHE is who REALLY loved by man, and Chani will be Paul's legal concubine. :)

"He who controls the spice, controls the Universe." The place the sand meets the sea that I know of is in Africa, on the Atlantic coast to the South. | The film is fantastic visually, but lacking story wise. The miniseries does a much better job with the story. Also the miniseries followed up and did the next two books already. Deni hates dialogue... he had no business taking on this project which is heavy with dialogue. And he did Chani dirty, changing her story like he did making her a petulant child not a dutiful Fremen. And there are no atheist Fremen in the book. Just various views on what is prophecy and what isn't. The barb in the arena is like the picadors that lance the bulls to bleed and weaken them for the Matador. 6 books by Frank Herbert in the Dune series. Several more by his son. You'll like Paul again in the next book. His father loved his mother even though she was consort. She chose that to make sure he could marry into another house. But she's the one that bore his children. Marriage does't always = love.

Stilgar and Chani represented the duality and conflict for Paul’s choice to walk the golden path. Duty over personal happiness. The novel is more layered, but giving Stilgar and Chani the voices that Paul has internally makes for a more compelling movie. Chani still plays a part past this, but it was visually more impactful to see a betrayal of sorts, a sacrifice one could also say

There are 6 books in the Dune Series written by Frank Herbert (and a bunch more written by his son, which are not nearly as well received), which are Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune. These two movies are an adaption of just the first novel. The movies are stunning and excellent as stand alone works on their own merit. As adaptions of the novel, I'd say they capture like 75-80% of what is in Dune, but it is also one of the most complex and multi-layered books I've ever read, so that is an achievement. I think they sort of dropped the ball somewhat at the end, both because they sort of ignored or didn't address the implications of what they had very skillfully built up over the rest of the movie, and because the ending kind of undermines some of the main themes. They also made the Fremen much more two-dimensional than they are in the book. What the movie does do particularly well though, and a lot of this is reflected in the MUCH different character of Chani, is that Paul is NOT a Hero and one of the main theses of the book is that a Hero/Messiah is by far one of the WORST things that can happen to a people.

Everyone has already said this, but if you read the books, every decision Paul makes after domino the Water of Life is the "narrow road" he has to follow in order to lead to the least harmful result. All the results lead to doom for billions, but the narrow path is the least evil option. Choosing to marry Princess Irulan doesn't mean he loves her (in fact, their relationship is ruinous for the princess). Paul loves Chani--I won't spoil it, but it makes sense in the end.

There are dozens of books but the only ones which really matter (in that they are the only ones everyone agrees are canon) are the first 6 published books in the series by Frank Herbert himself. I know you mentioned knowing about strategy, but please keep in mind, we are still in pure feudalism even though it's over 20K years in the future. Generally speaking, at that level, marriage has rarely (if ever) had anything to do with love, and when it did, bad things tended to happen. History also shows it doesn't always mean there will be children or sexytime. Also, Paul's vision is (as far as we know) just about error free now. Not only does he see only one single way forward, but also Chani coming to terms with the situation. As harsh as it feels, as portrayed he has not betrayed his fidelity to Chani. He still has his wiggle room.
