30:50, the actor playing Jamis is Babs Olusanmokun. In real life, in addition to acting he is a third degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. Babs currently plays Dr M'Benga on the Star Trek prequel show Strange New Worlds. Over on that show as well as being the Chief Medical Officer for the USS Enterprise, his character M'Benga is also a fantastic hand to hand combatant. So if you like his vibe check him out over there as well.

Hi Laura. My cousin introduced me to science fiction around 1973. He gave me a ‘telephone’ book to read called DUNE! I took one look at it and said, “you can’t be serious!” He gave me some ‘rule of thumb’ to consider. Each one intrigued me that I wanted to read the book. He said to imagine an army of super soldiers called the Sardaukar, trained in a brutal savage world that turned them into the best soldiers in an empire. They have no concept of fear, pain, retreat or defeat. Absolutely ruthless and vicious…until they meet the Fremen of Arrakis who lived in an even more vicious world. And to survive in such a world that even a Fremen child was a match for a fully trained Sardaukar. That their meeting would shatter the psyche of the Sardaukar! It wasn’t that simple, but my cousin had a talent for words. I read the book all the way through. And I started reading more science fiction books from then on. A few years later he gave me another book. I think it was called Lord of The Rings…

Don't worry bout the book. I try to tell anyone before reading it, it's very different from modern literature, especially modern sci-fi. Classic sci-fi deals alot more with world-building, themes, philosophy, and tons on internal dialogue while being light on physically describing actions. It can be very inaccessible and is simply not for everyone. So don't feel bad if they don't click with you.

I totally understand why you thought the book was inaccessible, it's philosophically dense and full of morally ambiguous characters. Frank Herbert's experience with magic mushrooms inspired some of the novel's themes, and in all the book took six years of research and writing to complete.

25:50 haven't read the books so someone more informed can please correct me but, the reason Arrakis has spice is because its a by product of the wurm's biology and part of that process also strips the water from the planet. So as long as their are worms on Arrakis there can be no hope for oceans, plants, or paradise. It's not brought up in either of the movies so I don't think it counts as a spoiler, but I only found it out from other creators' lore videos.

You got it. Water is poisonous to the sandworms. So the larvae forms of the worms create underground capsules that lock up the water. All of the air on Arrakis is created by the exhalations of the sandworms.

I'm looking forward to your reaction to Part 2. I also found the book a tough read the first time through. The movies mirror the book in that the first part is primarily world building and stage-setting. Then in the second part things come together and the story takes off. By now I've read the original 6 novels multiple times. And every time I find more things that I missed in the previous reads. I have found the same to be true with the movies. They can be a bit overwhelming at first, but later watches allowed me to pick up on the more subtle details. Enjoy!

There are three different movies of Dune. One from 1984 then a mini series then this one. Each one covers the book from different angles. The book is just packed with detail that a 2 to 3 hour movie can never cover everything in one go.

  • @gomme1298

Adapting the first Dune book in 2 movies was impossible so there are many differences. The 2 movies have events supposed to be many years away from each others. We are VERY lucky tho, Devis Villeneuve wanted to shoot the 2 movies in all at once but Legendary Pictures said no. I guess Legendary Pictures didn't wanted to take the risk to throw so much money in such a risky project. Dune part 2 wasn't even sure to exist, but Denis made it, and Dune Messiah is already in production. Not only it's a miracle Dune part 1 exist but it's also another miracle we are going to see Messiah. In french we call it a "serpent de mer". "The non-literal meaning of serpent de mer is a recurring subject or a difficult problem that is often discussed but rarely resolved - it's most often used in politics." A movie project going from desk to another desk for decades. Dune was probably the biggest serpent de mer project of movie's history. David Lynch tried to adapt Dune in 1984. I'll let you take a look at what happened, it was a disaster. The movie is still considered as some kind of weird classic, a beautiful disaster with an incredibly beautiful OST. And then the "Dune people" like me (I fascinated by David Lynch's movies but I never read the books... I'm not a book guy but I just started to read books since Dune part 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 (Neuromancer, Hardwired)) waited for DECADES for something to happen. They're some old tv shows but they're terrible. Fun fact, Apple is going to adapt Neuromancer. Another miracle... I'm very pessimistic tho... Anyway, since there are a lot of differences, I don't think there is one way to discover Dune. You can start with the book or the movies. Just one little point in favor of the books, some details aren't explained in the movies so sometimes you'll wonder "hey, why can they do this ? why can't they do this ? why can do they do this now but they didn't in a precedent scene ?". I've read a lot of comments from people who reads the books and now I understand most of what could be seen as incoherent, but I didn't read the books yet and my english isn't very good so I'll let someone else explain it to you. Probably the most important one : "Lasguns were the preferred weapon for armies. However, when shields were being employed, lasguns were generally not used because contact reaction between a lasgun beam and a shield created a nuclear explosion that often killed everyone within a large radius." This is why they can't just randomly use shield or weapon, which gives another very interesting dimension to combat. Also the shields attract the sandworms... 21:50 is a very good example of the strategy, the enemies are using "slow" projectiles but Duncan knows how to perfectly take advantage of the shield.

As Quinn is referencing from the Dune Encyclopedia (though i personally have not read that), i will go with the 34,000 year figure......however, i am aware that, again, according to Quinn, the encyclopedia traces Atreides back to ancient Rome, that is only knocking off 2000 years from that figure. However, as the encyclopedia does go through the ENTIRE Dune timeline, including Leto II, his reign of "ABOUT" 3500 However, after seeing that the timeline actually doesn't stop with Duncan Idaho, Sheeana Brugh, Scytale, Miles Teg, escaping on the no-ship.....that the timeline continues, for which was being referenced of the 34,000....ok i can see 20,000 again, me referencing the 35,000 years, wasn't meant as a definitive exact time, as i said "about" but sure the point was merely to say that, we aren't merely talking about a couple hundred years from now, nor merely a couple thousand....this is tends of thousands of years in the future.....this was my point

16:10, Paul is the result of the Kwitsatz Haderach (KH) breeding program which is intended to create a male Bene Gesserit. To prepare the way for the KH to ascend to power, the Bene Gesserit send out missionaries throughout the galaxy to spread legends and false beliefs about a coming messiah. On Arrakis that false legend is called the Lisan al Gaib. Because Paul is the KH his abilities will dovetail quite nicely with the Lisan Al Gaib prophecies. The KH breeding program is a secret known only to the Bene Gesserit and a few other people. The Fremen don't know anything about it they just suspect that Paul is the Lisan Al Gaib.

Have you considered watching the 1984 David Lynch version of Dune. Although it's not my favorite, it is more accessible. That is if you can stand what the studio forced them to chop to make it fit into a single movie. And Lynch makes a few substantial changes to the story, but it also includes things from the book this movie doesn't. I absolutely loved Dune, I read it in my late teens and had to read the book twice how to get the full understanding of the story. Good luck in your literary journey, I admire your grit and determination in trying to get this story finished.❤ Maybe I can show you the way... 3:38 although the voice is a kind of control it isn't magic. Over thousands of yearsthe Bene Gesserit have developed a method to pitch their voice that causes people to respond without thinking. It is similar to the way you respond to your mother telling you to do something without thinking about it or your dog stopping what is doing when you forcibly tell him no. The Bene Gesserit have also spent centuries developing methods of controlling their own bodies. They can slow their metabolism, They can neutralize poisons, They can choose whether or not to become pregnant and the sex of their child, and they have the ability to read people's body language microexpressions and ways of speaking to fairly accurately determined what their intentions are. The best of them called truth sayers can fairly accurately tell it to the lying or telling the truth Again this is Not magic. Just observation and control turned up to 11. They are also concubines too many of the houses a common practice in this universe. They seek to manipulate and control from the shadows. Jessica is a concubine freeing Lito to get married for political gain. 4:58 the emperor Who you don't see in this movie is in control. But there are limits to his power he has to work within the framework of agreement with other great houses. You have to abate the emperor but you also have limitations as to what he can do. And I don't know off the top of my head what those are but his power is not unlimited. For instance he cannot directly destroy one of the great houses or start a war against one. There would have to be justification such as a failure on the house's part. 12:50 The religion isn't real it was created by the Bene Gesserit to control the people of Dune so that they could manipulate the situation behind the scenes and control the spice. The prophecy is designed around the abilities that they expect the Kwisatz Haderach to have. The predictions are also vaguely worded enough so that they can be metaphorically interpreted to come true. This is all cynical manipulation not actual miracles and religious events.

Before I even get into the reaction, I also tried reading it twice before I got through it. I find you need to be in the proper mental space to get through it. I believe I was 20 when I got through the whole book. It is definitely a better watch if you’ve read the book, tbh. I personally suspect that the people who were like, “it was sooo slow, I fell asleep,” just weren’t giving it the effort it required for someone who hadn’t read the book-It takes a great deal if active watching. If you went into it thinking you could just sit back w/ some popcorn, bad news. This story is the kind that trusts you to dive into the world and keep up. There are six books, (Frank Herbert apparently wanted to write 7 but only got through 6…sounds familiar, reminds me to check on George RR Martin 😬,) the three Denis Villeneuve films cover the first two books, (Dune Messiah was apparently written because Herbert felt people didn’t quite get the point he was making with the first book, and because of that I am excited and worried about what the Villeneuve adaptation will be like.) There are no “powers” per se, not in the same sense as “magick,” Bene Gesserit sisters who are fully trained have so much control over their bodies they can stop their own hearts if they need to-Like, to avoid torture-So, it’s no surprise they can decide the sex of their children-especially since eugenics is kinda the whole thing about the sisterhood. Just like how the visions Paul has are potentialities and not seeing a predetermined future. Warning about the book, (that they didn’t add here,) there’s unfortunately a “queer villain” trope at play with the Baron. And with the exception of a few nitpicks, the film is probably the best adaptation we could have asked for. I will also say, I feel like this is a better read via physical book rather than audiobook, (I typically prefer listening to fiction.) Oooooohhhhh, “is Paul the bull or the matador,” loved hearing that comment. 🙏🏼☺️

The Baron was very athletic and had a very fine body but... he preferred male lovers and wasn't too crazy about getting down with a woman. The Baron despised Helen, so he attacked and raped her. Because she had such control over her own body chemistry, she internally brewed a toxin that entered the Baron as he entered her, corrupting his internal chemistry to go haywire and to gain weight that he didn't have the discipline to control himself. He eventually got so fat that he had to rely on suspensor belts for mobility.

It's a made up word that has alot of similarity to 'Kris' as in a Kris dagger, an ancient weapon that has alot of spirituality and mythology attached to it. Dune was inspired by many world cultures so there's gonna be some interesting spelling of words in there. (And i'm just guessing here, but crys may also be to imply it's crystalline in nature, at least not at all a metal forged weapon.) Regarding the pronounciations: Harkonnen can also be pronounced Har-ker-nen. And Atreides is often pronounced 'A-tray-id-eez' ('id' as in 'idiot'). You hear different characters pronounce both words in subtly different ways all through Dune 1 and 2, which makes sense given that they're mostly all from different cultures and native languages. Irulan in Dune 2 curiously pronounces it as 'A-tree-deez' which is a fun example of yet another subtle difference in speech.

One of the reasons you have such difficulty with it is that you're making assumptions that are based on common tropes. "Let me guess, House Atreides wants control of Arrakis . . ." Nope. Could not be more wrong. ". . . because then we'd have both spice and mind control." Nope. Could not be more wrong. The Bene-Gesserite, the women who have "mind control", do not belong to House Atreides. They are an independent, scientific-religious order who have seeded themselves amongst all the houses for the purposes of using them to obtain a goal. For thousands of years they have honed their skills through rigorous physical and genetic conditioning. There is no magic in Dune. George Lucas based his Jedi on them, so think of them somewhat as Jedi except that they are intensely self serving and all their powers are genetically and scientifically derived. Their ultimate goal is to create a superior being who will control the universe and thereby preserve peace. They have worked towards this goal for millennia by breeding bloodlines, manipulating genetics and making themselves indispensable to all the houses. The emperor's decision to send House Atreides to Arrakis is entirely political. He fears the rising popularity of Duke Atreides, so he intends to destroy the duke by setting him over Dune. The duke knows this, but is unable to deny the emperor's command.
