"Du hast" actually means "you have..." but in German it sounds the same like "Du hasst" meaning "you hate". So it has very intentional a double meaning, very hard to translate properly.

  • @TomTom-zw9is

You can't translate that to english. There ist an english version from "du hast" by Rammstein that makes the translation with "you hate". But I am pretty shure Rammstein will never again make something like that again. "Du hast" dates back to the late 90s, they where younger then... The pun with "du hast" with "hast/hasst" / "have/hate" is the main idea in the song. But the german text only says "du hast".

"They're showmen." Yeah, extremely. I've seen them live 3 times, and the only way I can describe it to people is that it's not a concert or a show. It's an experience, just an assault on the senses (and I mean that in a good way). You walk out of the stadium afterwards feeling exhausted and thrilled and blown away by what you've just experienced. It's an absolutely wild ride from start to finish, and an absolutely unique event to be part of.

The lyrics you have referenced aren't exactly wrong, but they are from their english version of the song, which basically lost its whole wordplay fun (specifically the double entendre of "du hast" [you have] and "du hasst" [you hate] in the context of the actual german wedding vows) and leant directly into that hate aspect of the german version. As far as I read up on it (which isn't all that much tbh) Rammstein themselves regret that they did the english version (afaik, their label "forced" them to do it).

Your pronounciation of "Rammstein" is correct. 👍 You got a translation of the lyrics that's not quite accurate. Lyrics of "Du hast" shortly explained: The first three words are "Du hast mich" (you have me) which at that moment doesn't make any sense in German. But it sounds (intentionally) the same as "Du hasst mich" (you hate me). Later in the song, the first three words are extended to a full sentence: "Du hast mich gefragt und ich hab nichts gesagt." (You asked me and I did not answer.) And then, to show what he was asked, the chorus is a wedding vow: "Willst Du bis der Tod euch scheidet treu ihr sein für alle Tage?" (Do you want to be faithful to her for all days until death do us part?) This is answered first by a kind of female voice "Ja" (yes) and afterwards by Till's harsh voice "Nein!" (No!). These - plus a slightly obscene word play on the wedding vow, that I will not explain here - are the whole lyrics (repeated a few times). According to the making-of video, it's about the sense of community within the band (whose line-up hasn't changed since they started). What videos to watch from Rammstein? I have a "few" suggestions. If you want to see more of their (incredible) live performances I would suggest Rammlied (live from Madison Square Garden) Sonne (live at Rock im Park 2017) Links 2 3 4 (live from Madison Square Garden) Ich will (live from Hurricane Festival 2016) Ich tu dir weh (live from Madison Square Garden) (don't take the lyrics too serious) Mein Teil (live at Hurricane Festival 2013) Amazing official videos Sonne (Sun) heavy, screwed up fairy-tale Links 2 3 4 (left) partly heavy march Ich will (I want) heavy, simple, way to celebrity Spring! (Jump!) (fan-made animated version with english subtitles) slow, partly heavy, very dark sarcasm! Radio (Radio) catchy song (with serious background) Keine Lust (not in the mood) heavy, funny, slidely sad Mein Herz brennt (My heart burns) scary, nightmarish, very special Amerika (America) catchy, not a love song Mein Land (My land), sounds & looks like easy living (unless you look at the slightly developing of the lyrics) Newest official videos from their last album "Zeit" in sequence of the tracks on the album: Zeit (Time) slow, dark, melancholic, emotional Zick Zack (Snip Snap) catchy song, sarcastic, funny Angst (Fear) very Rammstein, scary, credits at the end are helpful to understand the message Dicke Titten (Big Boobs) heavy (most of the time), catchy, funny, credits are funny too (my view) Adieu (Goodbye) dark, sometimes heavy, emotional Last but not least the great (but not nice) video "Deutschland" which has a lot of references to (mostly unpleasent) parts of German history. Video, lyrics, and sound are great (my view) and work very well together. For many of Rammstein's videos there are English subtitles available. To find a lot of them, you may search on KZread for: "educated marine rammstein" + songname For live videos of Rammstein songs, www.youtube.com/@Bucksttabu/playlists is a good source. In case of Rammstein, precise translations of the lyrics is hard work (and sometimes not possible in subtitles), because they are playing many times with double meanings of words or slightly modify common German expressions and symbolic language pictures to invert or change their meanings. I wish you to enjoy your Rammstein journey.

@@nickforell1 And if you are interested in that wordplay Arno didn't want to explain: The German verb for "to part" is related to the English word sheath, so by swapping "death" and "part", we get "til the death of the sheath". You may guess which female body part has that name in German. That detail is, in my eyes, actually somewhat important, as it underlines what the song is about: The difference between the female and male desire to be sexually faithful. Understanding this, "you hate me" becomes more than a cheap pun. The male feels like the female hates him and wants to torture him with that restriction.

Great reaction! Thank you! And very unexpectedly, it's a psychologist's reaction (usually either musicians or listeners do reactions to Rammstein), and this unusualness is very valuable. I'll subscribe to watch for future reactions to Rammstein. Till's lyrics for the psychologist are very, very good😊 You had a pretty easy start, and Engel and Du Hast aren't overly difficult lyrics. But there's just a huge amount of masterpieces ahead on this journey, both in terms of poetry and m musically, as well as in terms of show and video. Rammstein is a really unique band. I'm a teacher, but I studied psychology as an elective, so I can safely say that Rammstein's lyrics are a field that doesn't end beyond the horizon, there are many layers of meaning, wordplay and traps in them. From my point of view, the most interesting psychologically are those Rammstein songs in which Till maximally abstracts from his own self and lives through the song on behalf of his character (and the choice of these characters in Rammstein... - A maniac, a child witness of his sister's murder, an incestuous rapist, a cannibal victim... Till explores in his lyrics sometimes absolutely extreme sides of human consciousness) I would recommend these songs with subtitles superimposed on the video (educatedmarine channel): "Wiener Blut" (kzread.info/dash/bejne/k2xmq6SbmLe9f8o.html) Mein Herz brennt Piano Version (kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6FmzqSApsWzmso.html) Heirate mich (kzread.info/dash/bejne/gIWKzJmTd7Xdo7Q.html) Amour (kzread.info/dash/bejne/aIyltciAmbbSfs4.html) With embedded subtitles (Buckstabu channel): Mein Teil (kzread.info/dash/bejne/fJyNlK6vnby3fMo.html) Morgenstern (kzread.info/dash/bejne/nWGlq6iQYpbJoZs.html) Mutter kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2Zq0KaNoc3Febg.html And of course - Puppe (in my opinion, you should listen to the album version first, there is no music video for this song. There are closed captions here kzread.info/dash/bejne/gpmXl7FrgqTOZZM.html But the concert version is very strong too, it has built-in subtitles: https:/ /kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6eJuM2jhdK4ntI.html ) Greetings from Germany 😊

lyrically, it is not that easy. it is a clever play on words. "du hast" means you have, while "du hasst" means you hate (same pronounciation). the song plays intentionally with a double-meaning, but it is mainly "you have". and it is not the only double-meaning. at some places he sings "bis der tod uns scheidet" which means til death do us part, at others he sings "bis zum tod der scheide" which means til death of the vagina.

I only have a couple years of highschool German under my belt, but I'm pretty sure a significant part of this song is the ambiguity of "du hast mich" (you have me), and "du hasst (haßt) mich" (you hate me). Without context you can't tell which he is saying. And I think the more literal translation of the first part is: You, you have/hate, you have/hate me, you have/hate me, you have asked me and I have not said anything.

Awesome reaction!!! Was stoked to see this come up. A couple fun little tidbits about Rammstein’s live shows: Flake’s treadmill actually serves an important purpose. The guy is a ball of energy and needs to be moving all the time lol. He used to want to run all over the stage but since he’s a keyboardist…that’s not really feasible haha. He got a treadmill so he could keep moving without actually going anywhere haha. Their pyrotechnics actually started out because of Till’s stage fright. He has pretty bad social anxiety and during their early years a lot of their songs had long instrumental interludes. He used to perform wearing goggles so he couldn’t see the crowd but he needed something to do to during all the interludes. So a buddy of his recommended lighting himself on fire to pass the time. Till enjoyed it so much that he went and got a pyrotechnics license so he could keep upping the ante the way he wanted to. Turns out that lighting yourself on fire is a legit coping mechanism given the right environment lol. Can’t wait for the next one!!!! I hope it’s either Deutschland or Ich Tu Dir Weh!!! Cheers!

lyrically, it is not that easy. it is a clever play on words.

Du Hast... means "You have me" - But... Du Haast means You hate me. Its a word play in entire song. When you hear the entire "Du hast mich gefragt" it means "You asked me" So yes it is kind of Wedding vows, but if you hear only one part of it, it sounds like "You hate me when I say no to your question". before he sais "NEIN" it is heard ... like female voice saying JA (yes). And when it is heard that, flames on stage go UP, but when he yells "NEIN" (No), Fires on stage go down. They are awesome band.

A lot of the "make-up" they wear, especially Till, is flame retardant. Till really liked the pyrotechnics aspect, so much so that he is a trained and licensed pyrotechniction. Till and the other two up front have it on, it has A LOT on, because they work so close to the explosions and flames. If you see Till with his hair slicked and tied back and with a lot of "make-up" on, shit is blowing up that show.

"Du hast" in german means "you have" or "you did...". "You hate" would translate to "du hasSt" (double S). "Du hast mich gefragt und ich hab' nichts gesagt". Means: "You've asked me, and/bud I didn't say anything."

Rammstein is often doing a play on words which have a double meaning in german. Regarding to this song you can " listen/read " it in two ways. That " Du hast " would mean " You have ". But " Du hasst " ( with two s ) means " You hate ". But only when the whole sentence is sung, you realize the exact meaning. Because only singing " Du has(s)t " can mean both but once that whole sentence is sung: " Du hast mich gefragt... " ( meaning: " You have asked me..." ) the real meaning becomes clear. The false lead comes also by singing and repeating " Du has(s)t mich. " This sentence alone would mean " You hate me ". But following it with " Du hast mich.....gefragt " it changes towards " You have asked me..." -vonStahlmach (Same i've posten on another channel so if you commented on that one i've already read it :D )
