Claude Nougaro was one of the greatests, singer, composer, writer, he did such beautiful songs... I wish one day you'll react to some Alain Bashung's songs. He was a legend, an icon and we miss him so much.

He gave us some very beautiful and popular songs. It is true that his departure for the USA gave him a new lease of life. Thanks Derek. You should know that we are talking about you in France 😎 ..... He's one of those artists that, after he died, people finally recognized his talent. Even the songs that didn't work at the time are now famous and even sometimes taught in schools in music classes. Who in France never learned Armstrong when they were in school?

I love where your discovery of French music leads you! LOL. I'm from the same city (Toulouse) as Claude Nougaro. He is an institution in France and particularly in my region. I love what you said about the instruments "having sex". That's Nougaro 100%. Always very epidermic, intuitive and lead by sound. He was a great fan of jazz, bossa nova, and really anything that felt raw and authentic. His lyrics are always full of play on words and word sound play. You really are very perceptive to have felt that just from the music. As you read, this was a second breath for his career. He'd be very successful in the 60s and 70s, but had hit a lull. He went to New York and it got his creative juices flowing again. Nougaro is a really interesting character in French music. He sports a strong Southwestern accent from the Toulouse region. This was a BIG no-no in France (still is to some extent). You had to lose your accent if you wanted to make it. But he didn't. He celebrated it in many ways and he was so talented that even the elitist Parisian music industry couldn't stop his success. Glad you enjoyed it!

You should watch and hear about this French masterpiece from Michel Polnareff, a musician, a pianist since his 3 yo. I created the melody of this song and ask to a writer, a friend of mine to write the lyrics and the guy wrote it like a letter to a girl but in fact it's a letter from Polnareff to his original country : France. He left the country in 1973, 4 years before, because he had been betrayed by his accountant who had emptied his bank accounts. Polnareff is now 76 yo and always lived in Palm Springs but came back in France during the 80's, 90's to live anonymously in France and came again in 2007 and 2016 for tours and his last album was released in November 2018 :) Enjoy @

Even in France this song did not had the fame it should have get. Indeed the title is a contraction between Nougaro and New-York and he is describing the energy he felt in this city. The simplest things are the most efficient. Nougayork works on 4 chords only - Gm, Eb, F, Dm - and Philippe Saisse (the composer) makes the best of them with his insane instrumentation and riffs. Needless to say, this song (and the eponymous album "Nougayork") relaunched Nougaro's career in no time. Thanks for your reaction video.

Great Claude Nougaro. Unique Jazzy Blues Poetical... Listen to "Le Cinema" , "Une petite fille en pleurs" , "Armstrong" "Je suis sous..." etc... Each of his songs is a true creation and a whole scenery of life, music-hall and orchestra... Nougaro brings dynamics to the brain and the body !

Pour voir un différent style de Claude Nougaro : 1965 "Armstrong", 1967 "O Toulouse". On parlait des influences jazz de Nourago, ce qui m'a fait penser a Michel Jonasz "La boite de jazz" et "Joueurs de blues". To see a different style of Claude Nougaro: 1965 "Armstrong", 1967 "O Toulouse". We were talking about Nourago's jazz influences, which made me think of Michel Jonasz "The jazz box" and "Blues players".

Nouga York is a double game of word... First about new york and second because in the south west of France we call the ham " jambon d'york" I don't know why. My grandma and my parents used to say like this. It's an all expression. In the rest of France it's jambon de Paris (ham of Paris) so it's a way to put a "made in South West" stamp on the song 😁

With musicians like Philippe Saisse, Nile Rodgers (Chic) and Marcus Miller among many others, Nougayork was the ultimate FU sent by Claude Nougaro to the french record company mogul Eddie Barclay who fired him because he thought he was outdated. Check out other Nougaro masterpieces, like Lady Liberty, Brésilien, Le Jazz et la Java... And his live rendition of "Le Sampa" with Richard Gotainer is ridiculously entertaining.
