Notice that Ronnie Van Zant, the lead singer, did his part at the beginning of the song, then let the rest of the band have their moment to shine. When his vocals were done, he moved out of the way and blended into the background. He didn't try to be out front and be a part of it. In my opinion, that makes him a great front man. He doesn't want nor need all the attention, all the time. RIP to him and the others who tragically lost their lives.

Afaik, the long solo was attached to the song in the studio simply because of that very reason - Ronnie wanted to have 5 minutes to rest his voice when playing live, so he said 'just do something for 5 minutes' and they did ( iirc, Allen Collins played both guitar parts for the recording to get that sweet chorus effect ). Again, specifically for the purpose of the singer having time to rest when performing the song live. Allen was simply a beast, no matter how much the drummer and the bassist are hyped up here. It's clear that him and the slide guitar carry this one. Stupid, stupid plane.

Check out "Tuesdays Gone", "That smell", "Simple Man" and "Sweet Home Alabama", they are really good tunes, too Thanks so much for your thoughtful reaction.✌❤

On October 20, 1977, a Convair CV-240 passenger aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed in a wooded area near Gillsburg, Mississippi. Chartered by the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd from L&J Company of Addison, Texas, it was near the end of its flight from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Lead vocalist/founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray all died as a result of the crash while 20 others survived

The sound you asked about near the beginning, that sort of "bird tweet," was made by Gary Rossington using his slide right near the pickup. Allen Collins, the guitarist in white, wrote the music and is the main soloist. They were founding members of the band. During the recording of their debut album the bassist, Leon Wilkeson, left and was replaced by Ed King. When Leon returned Ed switched to guitar and Skynyrd's three guitar attack was born ("Bring all my mules out here," as Ronnie liked to say.) He co-wrote "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Saturday Night Special" and generally did great work with the band but left after their third album. A few months later, after some prompting by Cassie Gaines, one of the Honkettes, Skynyrd's backing vocalists, the band agreed to let her brother Steve audition as a replacement for King. He got the gig and is the bearded guitarist in the video. He's on the live album "One More From the Road" and the studio album "Street Survivors." Three days after "Street Survivors" was released Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines died when the band's plane ran out of gas and crashed. The rest of the band was severely injured. That was about 3 1/2 months after this video was filmed.

Billy Powell and Leon Wilkinson had a gospel southern rock band in the 80's called Vision. Also, they were Decons army church. They were part of the youth program there. Let's just say the weekend retreats ROCKED! We didn't play Kumbaya. Also, Ronnie Van Zant's brother is in the band 38 Special.

Yes, the plane went down at 6:52pm on October 20,1977. The crash didn't have to happen...it was solely the fault of the pilot & co-pilot. Ronnie Van Zant, was the lead singer, a musical genius & this was, without a doubt, his band, the guitarist with the short brown hair, Stevie Gaines, his sister & backup singer, Cassie Gaines, their Asst Road Manager Dean Kilpatric, along with both pilots died in the crash. The other members & crew survived but many, including the epic guitar soloist, Allen Collins, who wrote this song when he was about 16-17 years old, had very serious injuries. In fact, the doctors wanted to amputate Allen's left arm, but his dad wouldn't let them. He went on to fully recover the use of his arm. His wife (girlfriend at the time) unknowingly contributed the opening lyrics to the song when during an argument with Allen one day, turned to him & said, "if I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?". It's since come to memorialize Ronnie as we all remember him, now poignantly, singing those words... If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me. And 43 years later we still do! Tragically, she later died during the miscarriage of their 3rd child. He had a very hard time trying to deal with the deaths of Ronnie, Stevie & Cassie, then his wife whom he adored, and sunk deeper into alcohol & drugs & subsequently had a drunk driving accident that killed his girlfriend at that time & paralyzed him from the waist down & could no longer play the guitar. He died of pneumonia due to his parallelization in 1990. Yes, there were 3 guitarists & they all played lead in different songs. In this song Gary Rossington played the lead in the beginning, Allen, of course, played the epic solo & Stevie played the position of backup lead towards the end. The killer keyboardist was Billy Powell, the badass bassist was Leon Wilkeson, the awesome drummer is Artemis Pyle. Gary & Artemis are the only 2 members still alive. Heartbreakingly, trader seemed to follow Skynyrd. RIP to the extremely underrated musical geniuses that made up this band. You are ask greatly missed! 😢😢 Anything else you'd like to know, just ask. I can answer most any question about them. They are my fav band & I grew up listening to them. Saw them in 76 when I was 10yo...no one knew that in one short year, that Skynyrd, was was knew then, would be no more. Love your insightful reaction to them! Happy that you are knowledgeable enough to catch the awesome nuances that made up this song & band. A lot of reactors don't. Subscribed to you after watching & listening to you watch them! Great job hon. Thank you for getting them. A better life of this song is from Knebworth, England...check out that performance. Allen's solo is even longer, more epic & you do get to actually see him (Stevie & Gary) shredding this! You won't be disappointed...trust me!!

the opening line of this song is a question that Allens ( 1 of the guitar players ) wife ask him one day. Sadly she passed away and it tore Allen up. So this song is really special.

Yes tragically this was just a couple months before Ronnie VanZant the lead singer, Steve Gains the guitarist in the red pants by the piano, his sister Cassie Gaines a great back up singer, the bands manager, and pilot and copilot were killed when the bands plane crashed. The Gaines lost two children that night. terrible. The plane actually ran out of gas! Seems like they knew and put everything into this version of the song. Awesome. RIP. Check out their performance of Sweet Home Alabama live from this very same concert.

That noice you hear is a bird sound and yea it is from a guitar the guy in the black shirt is doing it. It was October 20,1977 when the plane crashed killing the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gains the guy with the white shirt and beard and one of the back up singers Cassie Gains

The guy with the black guitar in the red pants (Steve Gaines), his sister Cassie Gaines (a backup singer) and lead singer Ronnie Van Zant were the ones who died in that plane crash. The drummer (Artimus Pyle) survived the crash and went for help.

To let you know we all thought the confederate flag was just being proud of the south. No one put any thought into it. It was like someone representing being from NY or something.

@@sarahzentexas Good to know. I didnt know that. I remember kids with the flag up north on their walls because we thought it was a happy flag about southern pride the dukes of hazard and Lynyrd Skynyrd. But we didn't have the internet and public schools made the schools today look like private school.

@@MuckoMan that's how the whole "heritage" mentality came about. Nobody told these kids what it really stood for, they just thought it was a symbol of pride about where you're from. They were mostly innocent and just happy to be alive and have a connection to the band. Now that we all know better, we can DO better than previous generations. Love and unity and good music to us all. 😊💜💚💛✌️

That Flag was created to be the first official flag of the confederacy but was rejected. Instead, it was adapted as the battle flag during the Civil War and eventually it was placed on 2 of the 3 Confederate official flags. The first Official Confederate flag looked to much like the United States Flag only with the stars formed in a circle, they hated it, so they changed it. The second version they called the "Stainless Banner". Which was an all white flag with the Battle flag in the corner. Confederates hated that one as well, cause it looked to much like a white flag of surrender from a far. So they changed it one final time to the "Blood-Stained Banner", which had the Confederate Battle Flag on a White background but with a red stripe down the right side. That was the final flag created but never got to see much use because the South lost the war only a month or so later. The actual Confederate Battle Flag as we know it today was only used by soldiers on the battlefield during the Civil War. it was Hollywood, through films like Birth of a Nation and Gone with the Wind that made it popular for the racists like the KKK to use against the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and 60s. That flag was Never apart of Southern Heritage before the Civil War. It was created during the Civil War to fight against US Americans. It was and forever shall be a Flag created for Traitors and Treason against the United States.

That whistle noise you're hearing is his slide at the lower end of his guitar which they never showed that on the movie. He taps the string with that glass slide and makes that bird sound. Which they cut that out of the video. Back in those days you didn't show your secrets.

You would have to be living under a rock, on a different planet, in a different galaxy to never have heard of what most people might consider the national anthem of rock ‘n’ roll.
