The tear is real. She was asked about it in an interview and she said during the making of the video, she was thinking about things she had been through including her mother's recent passing. The song was actually written by Prince and after the video took off, he sent her a thank-you note in gratitude.

Prince wrote this song but Sinead O'Connor made it her own and this is the best version ever.

I'm surprised by how many people who review this song have never known loss. Surprised but happy, I can listen to this song a million times and I will shed at least one tear each and every time. It doesn't matter whether it was a lover, a best friend, or a family member if you have ever lived through that kind of loss and the years of constant sorrow that come along with healing, you will be affected by this song.

In her voice, she put the very definition of a broken heart. Prince wrote it years before she recorded it but she sang it as if she had written it herself about her own list love.

That last verse where she cried she was thinking of her late mother(very real tear, she has spoke about it before when asked), i assume Prince, the song writer must have known about her mother and the abusive relationship she had with her mother. I think this song was released in 1989-1990.

She was 16 yo when her mother passed away and in documentary which was love letter to her mother, she was denied by prince estate to put her signature cover song in it and she was upset.

Yep Prince wrote it, but Sinead made it hers. She was horrifically abused as a child and lost her mother as a teen and always wanted a loving relationship with her. She said everything she sings it she thinks of her mom. Watch other live versions. It’s such raw emotion and passion from her. Makes me cry.

Great to see the truth of this beautiful performance cut through the intellect and play. This is beyond art. It is a shared soul connection. You felt it, eventually, and I hope part of you loved it.

Interesting tidbit: This was written by Prince for a collaboration with a group he formed called The Family. He didn't do much with the song himself, and then Sinead later re-arranged it and struck gold with it.

So I believe Prince did *NOT* write "Nothing Compares 2 U" for Sinead O'Conner. Sinead would have been 19 in 1985. Further, Sinead didn't release her *debut* album until 1987. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sin%C3%A9ad_O%27Connor Hence it is extremely unlikely that Prince would know about a young Irish woman, and her abusive relationship with her mother in 1985. Further Sinead's mother didn't die until 1986. I hope that helps.

Sinead R.I.P. covered this song shortly after her own mother was killed in a car crash, and all Sinead's heart-felt emotions were for her own mother who she missed dearly. Love from Ireland

The songs she's written are very personal, and she always brings the emotional intensity. She recently wrote a book that described the stories behind especially her earliest songs like Mandinka, Troy, Never Get Old. She's special - glad you enjoyed! 😊

She was crying because her mom had just died about a week earlier. Her mom liked planting flowers. That little line was about her.

I lost a loved one in lung cancer 15 years ago. Often in my dreams she calls on me, I wake up of a sudden..I cant sop shedding my tears when i hear this song.. I miss her so and sometimes i want to join her. But i have to live m,y life first. After that.. We may meet again. Miss you Anitha my last and only love.

The part where she sings all the flowers that you planted mama and I know living with you was sometimes hard.. her mum abused her terribly growing up and her mum had died… I think she felt something with this song and that’s why she cried at that part.

I've read the comments and I constantly seen people say Prince wrote the song but Sinead own it. This is exactly why Prince did NOT like people covering his songs. He said once another artist covers your song everybody believes it's that artist song. He did NOT like that she covered his song even before it became a hit, but because he didn't own his masters at the time and Warner Bros did they allowed her to record the song.

He Mother was killed in a car crash in 85 , her mother abused her both physically and sexually . The statues represent both her mother and killing her pain within and yet even tho said Doc ( Psychiatrist) tells her to stop being depressed , go have fun , she still loves her Mother and misses her , nothing compares to a Mothers love . And she also lost her 17 year old son to suicide and today shes a Muslim , she was also abused in Dublin Ireland by the Catholic Church of which she spoke out and against , shes an angel indeed . Correction he did NOT give the song to her, his record company Warner Bros gave her the song because at that time Prince didn't own his masters Warner Bros did so they allowed her to rerecord the song not Prince.

I think these reactions should be done individually. After watching hundreds if not thousands of them it's obvious that one of the couple (almost always the wife) is holding back her true emotional reaction which is what we want to see. Men are so trained to avoid their emotions and will try to use humor, distraction, etc. instead. This usually keeps the wife from being truly vulnerable. Just compare the reactions to this song of women who are alone to ones done with their husbands (or anyone else for that matter). I think you will definitely see the difference. Being alone is usually more authentic emotionally. Of course, this is just my opinion, but I'm an expert at my opinion :)

I think this song was composed by Prince. If you listen to his version is not as dramatic and expressive as Sinead O’Connor’s, is almost unrecognizable. O’Connor is actually doing justice to the song. Not being the best interpreter of their own composition happen before in classical music. Piano concerto no.2 composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff was better sounding performed by Sviatoslav Richter, a famous classical pianist.
