Prince wrote this song, Sinéad made it a worldwide hit. Sinéad had 10 brilliant albums. Unfortunately she was physically and sexually abused by her mother. Her mother would make her sleep in the backyard in a shed. When Sinéad turned 19 she was ready to try to forgive her mother but sadly her mother died in a car crash before she got the chance. That’s why the song is personal to her. The wee bit about all the flowers that you planted in the backyard, all died when you went away. Sinèad had a very sad life and suffered mental health issues as a result. January 2022 her son Shane aged 17 took his own life. She never got over the loss. She was an amazing activist and charitable lady. Very down to earth. We in Ireland 🇮🇪 loved her as did the rest of the world. RIP Sinéad, back with your son. Your music lives on.

This is why i hate people whining about cancel culture. Real people speaking out have been "cancelled" before "cancelled" just meant being complained about on twitter. Now it's nothing but people bitching about cancel culture because they got mean tweets about them for talking about trans people, when this woman's career was snuffed for speaking out about child abuse in the church. go back to the hollywood blacklist of suspected communists in the 50s. Cancel culture always existed, the only difference is now people take any criticism as being cancelled.

For all that Prince wrote & first performed the song, it was pretty much unnoticed until Sinéad performed it, and meant every word, sung it with every fibre of her being, in the music video tears rolled down her face and I think everybody that saw it cried with her. It remains one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded and Sinéad was a beautiful soul, an activist for the causes she believed in and that deserved her activism, she remains loved and held in high, high regard. 🌸

My favorite Sinead story is that when she was first signed with a record company, they wanted her to adopt the “look” that so many female artists either choose or are forced to take on (sexy, pop princess) which is fine if that’s who you are but it definitely wasn’t Sinead. So she shaved her head. I love that she had the conviction and the balls to defy them like that. Thanks for another fun reaction.

Sinead is held in very high honour . She was a musical legend, no tricks or backing tracks, lip synking. Her voice is real and raw. She was a human rights activist, and didn't back down ,even when her own career was on the line. She spoke out vigorously on child sex abuse by the Catholic clergy, and she suffered personally because of this. But she was right and time has proven that. She gave courage to abused people to come forward and fight for justice. The more they tried to silence her, the larger the number of people came forward to support her, by exposing what happened to them. Rest in peace Sinead, and thank you.

It is so hard to believe that she did not write this song, because she delivers it so personally and emotionally. She did connect with one line- “all the flowers that you planted, mama, in the backyard, all died when you went away”. She thinks of her own mother at that line, and actually sheds a tear in the official video around that point as well.

Thank you from Ireland for your HEARTFELT reaction☘ We are mourning our beautiful Daughter Sinéad💔She was a force of nature with unmatched talent, but she was also very fragile. Please react to her live acapella performance of 'I Am Stretched On Your Grave' - a 17th-century Irish poem that she transformed with just her voice and a 'beat box' sample; She was 'keening' for our Country & it is pure perfection. (Keening is a traditional style of Ireland's culture and Sinéad was a Master of it.) The media and music industry cruelly shunned her for speaking THE TRUTH about the catholic abuse of innocent Irish children, including herself & she was eventually proven CORRECT - now an acknowledged fact globally. But the damage was already done to her and her career. I hope they're proud of their relentless victim shaming of a 23 year old girl who was brave enough to speak out. Rest easy sweet Sinéad - I hope you're finally at peace with your beloved son, Shane💚We will never forget you.

Sinéad (SHIN-aid - in Irish, an S followed by an I or E is aspirated as if there was an H after it). She was an amazing artist, a fantastic voice, full of raw power and exquisite control. A strong activist, someone who stood up to the establishment and lost most of her career over it, but did it anyhow. She struggled with mental health issues all her life. She has an amazing catalogue not only of modern music, but of Irish traditional tunes (The Foggy Dew with the Chieftains makes me cry every time).

How she tanked her career - on Saturday Night Live, she got up on stage, held up a picture of the Pope, and ripped it in two, on live TV. She was protesting the centuries of cover-ups of sexual abuse within the church. Now, decades later, things are finally coming out and being proven, and there are finally lawsuits and consequences, but back then (1992), there was a stranglehold on such prosecution. Also, this was a picture that her mother personally owned. Her mother abused her for years - so it represented lies and abuse. Brave, strong, symbolic. In 1991, she was nominated for four Grammys. She refused to attend or accept an award, in protest over the industry's focus on money over artistic value. She used her fame to speak up about abuse, human rights, racism, organized religion, and women's rights.

She had mental issues all of her life and was a commited activist and still was untill her death. I think at the time, she was sadly misunderstood by the fans and booted out by the medias, but she still remains an important figure of the 80`s era

She’s from Ireland 🇮🇪 & totally worth going down the rabbit hole. She does come from a very troubled background. Her mother was abusive in every sense of the way. She was controversial for standing up to the Pope live on SNL, regarding the sa in the Catholic church. She also did not want to be marketed in a “sexual” way. This is why she cut her hair & refused to dress provocative. She wanted to be known for her music. She wrote a letter to Miley Cyrus telling her to beware of the industry sexualizing her….you can find said letter online. Some of my favorite songs of hers: *Three Babies, *Emperor’s New Clothes, *The Last Day Of Our Acquaintance, *Black Boys On Mopeds, *I Am Stretched On Your Grave, *Mandinka *This Is To Mother You….. gosh, so many more!

It’s a fantastic performance. She did have a lot of pain and suffering in her life. She has said she had really healed through her music. Sadly, her life never got any easier. She was an amazing activist, incredibly, intelligent, she ran circles around pretty much anyone who interviewed her. I suggest that you look up interviews with her, I am always amazed by what a intelligent and remarkable human being she was. There’s a very good documentary about her called. “Nothing compares”, I strongly recommend watching it.

That was the Amnesty International concert in 1990 which took place in Santiago Chile. It was organized to celebrate Chile's return to democracy after the 17-year dictatorship by Augusto Pinochet. Many international stars were part of this lineup: Tracy Chapman, Ruben Blades, Sinead, Peter Gabriel, NKOTB, Sting, among others.

Sinead had a "diffcult" relationship with her mother who passed away in an RTI and some of this is addressing the issues. Perfect song for the perfect singer. RIP Sinead ❤❤

her mum had recently passed so the song has a couple of "meanings" .The part about the dead flowers is about her mum. They had a rather tough relationship. On the album version video she's actually in tears wen her voice trails off & she's looking down.

I'm crying listening to this. She spoke up and know one listened. Both my Grandparents were in Catholic Residential schools in British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦. They were Native Indians, they were beatin raped and tortured. If they spoke our Native language they would stick needles through there toungue. We have a Dark history here that they tryed to cover up. Now they are finding over 10,000 unmarked Graves of children who didn't make it.

SHE WAS FROM DUBLIN, IRELAND....O'Connor has spoken openly about her mental health struggles. She has said that she was physically abused by her mother as a child and told Oprah Winfrey that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2007, which she later redacted. PEOPLE reports that in 2015, the singer posted on Facebook she had "taken an overdose" amidst a custody battle with Shane's father, the musician Donal Lunny. She later lost custody of her son. Her son took his life at 17. RIP Sinead, thank you for your music........

In my mind, both the official video and the live performances stand in there own right, as equally emotionally charged, but in different way I’ll say again, Sinéad was one of the beautiful souled, but troubled angels, and will be missed. 💐🇮🇪🇮🇪

You pronounced it correctly. It’s Irish, so it sounds like “Sh” Lots to know about her. She got brutalized by the media and celebrities after ripping a picture of the pope up on SNL calling out the rampant child abuse by the church. After that her life when downhill. Mental health, substance abuse, death of her son. She once said “They say horrible things about me. They say I’m a bad person. But they never said I couldn’t sing” ❤️🇮🇪🇨🇦
