There is no doubt in my mind that Sinead didn't find the song, the song found her. There is no one who can perform this song better. No one.

Yes that's true 100% agree!!!❤
64 year old guy here - after 30 seconds I'm in tears. This performance is perfection.
32yrs later, and I still think this is the best music video ever made. Her eyes show the emotion, and pain of heartbreak.

It’s a great video but it’s no “Take on Me” by A-Ha😁
This video is so simple yet so powerful. It’s literally just her face. But her face is so expressive, and her eyes feel like they look right into your soul. She does such an amazing job conveying the emotion. Prince wrote the song but Sinead will forever own it.
The song, the melody, her stunning voice, her pained face, all imparted grief, a desperate longoing, emptiness. It was astonishing that you smiled throughout.
Sinéad O’Connor is one of the greatest female vocalists! She feels every second!
Her eyes are absolutely captivating. That saying "the eyes are the window to the soul". Sure is true with Sinead.
"you see her sing...and god damn", yep, that pretty much sums it up. It's just perfect.
I could never get tired of this song
Sinead was never one to hide. Others would have long shots or gimmicky movement to hide behind, but Sinead wanted to share who she was with her audience.
Your face at 2.32 that’s me listening to Sinead sing. It just consumes you. She gets inside you. One of the best vocalists we’ve ever had. RIP 🙌
Sinead (Shin aid) has endured more than a bit of trouble in her time but lately seems to have found some peace. I'm so happy for her. Massive, under appreciated talent. She is often maligned by the media and people who just don't matter.
That last shot of her. She has tears in her eyes. This is a song about deep heart break 💔 😢
This video does't need anything but Sinead's face! As you analized, verdy... It's one of the most beautiful songs ever...
Prince wrote this song for another artist. Sinead recorded this version years later, shortly after her mother died, and drew upon her grief, which you so accurately sensed in your reaction. And anyone whose gone through a rough breakup will feel exactly what she's saying. This one always moves me.

I always wondered about this, so I just looked up a video when Prince sings it at Paisley Park and he says "All the flowers you planted, baby, in the backyard" "Baby" or "babe" instead of "mama". Maybe Sinead was sad that she didn't have a good mother not that she lost an abusive mother. ✌
i just want to hug her so much
One of the most emotional and beautifully performed songs ever recorded. Prince was a genius and Sinead just got this absolutely spot on. I cannot imagine ever hearing a better version.

@@MrJocky82 That's a matter of taste. I far prefer O'Connor's vocal delivery to Connel's which I find far too "C&W" for my ears. The sheer originality of O'Connor's vocals place her version far above his. But, as I say, it's a matter of taste ;)

I like reactions in which the person reacting is not posing for the camera, but rather truly enjoying it.
Very nice pronounced.....You got it. Sadly she's not with us no more...Another star in the sky....R.I.P Sinèad 😢
Greatest review, Sinead was the best.
Sinead's mother died when she was 18, which is why she reacted the way she did when she sang the mama verse of the song.
Fans be singing this at Dimash's funeral 60+ years in the future.
I Love Sinead!
I’m loving this song being played by umpteen DJ ‘S,This is the 8th rendition up to now,I loved it back then and even more now.RIP Sinead xx
Troy is an absolute masterpiece by her.
The tight shot emphasizes her stark beauty, the power of her voice and the range of emotions. She’s also disembodied which is a subtle expression of her fragmented emotional state. She’s not feeling whole. At 5:11, the brief capture of her gaze off screen, to me, captures her loss. It’s stunning.
The message was ‘one on one’. Very personal. If there was something that ONLY ONE PERSON could UNDERSTAND it, coming from YOU. Her face is a closeup because she is talking to only one person. AND THATS WHY WE ALL LOVE THE SONG. Because we all have something we can only say to one person, OR WISH WE COULD. ❤
This track was on heavy rotation on the radio while I was having to work through a newly dead relationship. Between those two things life tore the heart clean out of me. Now I live alone, and I can hear this without the devastation of that time. Now I live by the lyrics mostly, and see anyone I care to (rare, by choice) and do whatever I might please to without falling foul of the law. Being alone is a totally fine life choice, but they never tell you that when you are young.🤔 Anyway, superb track, thanks for choosing to listen to it, thanks for the video.👍 Be well.😉
Her face and voice are amazing!
When this came out i was a young boy and tryed not to cry to this because boys don't cry but she cut her hair for this video i think and can remember some girls were so amazed by this song they wanted to cut their hair that short. 😸 She is/was really beautiful and some also thought she was crazy to cut her hair like that. Björk did it too i think...
Troy is another classic from her
I cried when I first heard this song…I was going through some pretty tough stuff back then…
I'm not sure how anyone could NOT be moved by this song. That tear, damn, that tear.
Screw Autotune artists. A great performance lasts forever.

I love this song and her version of it, but it is subject to a huge amount of engineering, in fairness.

@@dougoneill7266 --- aside from double-tracking her voice (a very common practice in popular music since the 50ss - even the Beatles used it quite often) there's not a whole lot of "engineering" on this track at all.
I believe anyone who ever listened to her do this song had the exact same reaction as you did! Your in good company young lady...Salut
beautifull reaction, it was so magical. thank you so much for this upload!
Prince wrote this song in 1984. Sinead O’Connor did this cover version in 1990. It went to no.1 in the UK charts and no.1 in 18 other countries. She tweaked the script slightly to make it a female version. The part she had tears in (All the flowers you planted, Mama, in the backyard) was thinking about her mum, who died in a car crash three weeks before. She had a very difficult life with her mum, and wanted to forgive her, but it was too late. All the other lyrics of this song (written by Prince) wasn’t about her life. She chose this song because she loved it herself. You pronounce her name “Shin-aid”
You can feel her pain. Her angst. That feeling of being rejected and having regrets. Powerful emotions that at one time in our lives we have experienced. Like the world came to an end.
Her mother died a couple of weeks before they recorded the video,so i think the tears are real..
You are right....SHEE-NAAD. I did not realize how Ms. O'connor changed the focus and meaning of the song to something universal, tender, vulnerable and defiant. She (and Phil Collins) can really MAKE you feel the emotion. Understand the angst they feel through the lyrics, as few can. Sadly, Poignantly Brilliant.

They didn’t plan the video this way, they planned to use the closeup sparingly, and use more of the other footage, but her performance was so genuine and powerful the flipped it.

That's the Song of her life 😢
I think it's the most poignant and sad love song ever. It's hard not to cry.
All the loneliness and breakup sadness in the world packed into one song. Can't ever listen without getting emotional, but love it since it came out. She absolutely knocked it out of the park with this one.
The evocative images are of Paris. I read she said she had no plan, no idea that a tear would come; but as it came she just went with it. So emotionally powerful.
So emotional cover of Prince's song. What a beautiful voice she has. Love Sinnead.
You, having heard her for thirty seconds: "Oh. Wow. She has a really, really good voice." Me, having heard that voice for thirty years: Understatement of the year, lol! Yeah, she's borderline MAGICAL! Her live performances are spellbinding. Just one example: "I am stretched on your grave" (the Sergio SPBR channel version) is absolutely mesmerizing to both eye and ear.
Incredibly soulful, remarkably controlled voice. Love me some SINÉAD. Thank you again sister Verdy.
sha nade o connor one of the greatest broken heart songs ever
I read Sinead was channelling the grief from her traumatic childhood. Thats one courageous woman. Rip Sinead

It's an Irish name x I grew up in Ireland. 3 year's older than sinead. And went through her hell too. She was my hero x
The video to this was directed by John Maybury who was my best friend when we were kids, we lived in a small town near London called Waltham Cross. We've lost touch now we were friends till we were about eleven then he moved away.
It’s a masterpiece

1985, 1990. When they still had a brain to sing.
Sinéad O'Connor used to have long beautiful hair. The Record company wanted to have her look in a certain way. "They wanted me to grow my hair really long and wear miniskirts and all that kind of stuff because they reckoned I'd look much prettier," she says. "So I went straight around to the barber and shaved the rest of my hair off."

"I Am Stretched On Your Grave" and "This Is The Last Day Of Our Acquaintance" by Sinead were on the same album as "Nothing Compares 2 U"; powerful drums, powerful vocals, powerful thoughts...
I saw Sinead O'Connor at Lollapalooza '95, in Vancouver. It was her first tour in her comeback. She was nervous, but gave a great performance. She had grown her hair out a bit, and I didn't recognize her at first.
Sinead has always been uncompromising in her performances - raw and genuine emotion her mother, with whom she’d had a difficult relationship, had died shortly before this was recorded, so when she sings “All the flowers that you planted mam/ In the back yard/ All died when you went away” and starts to cry, she’s thinking of her. A truly overfill singer who has had a very rough life. Other essential songs include Troy, Three Babies, and the trad Irish song I am Stretched on Your Grave.
Great song. Prince really was an incredible songwriter and this cover was amazing......its an oddity really.... very sad and emotional yet uplifting at the same time.

And now if you ever break up with someone, you will have a song to play in your head over and over. Great review.
Best #1 of the '90s for sure, and one of the best music videos ever. Sinead did a lot f the best covers but she also wrote a whole mess of great originals including 'The Last Day of Our Acquaintance' (recommended).
Prince wrote this, but she totally owned this shit man.
She knows how to sing her pain Great song Be safe out there
greetings from Argentina❤❤
The shots that were shown in the instrumental break were supposed to make up most of the video but when they watched the footage of the close up of her face it had such an effect on the team that they knew they had to make the video with just the close up of her face. But as they had spent all the time and money making the shots of her walking through the gardens they settled on putting them in the instrumental break.
I am pretty certain that no song has ever put what it feels like to lose someone better than this
This will blow you away!
The beauty of her voice is more evident in the beginning before they start double-tracking her vocals, when the drums come in, imho
bo burnham's "all eyes on me" also has that full face shot stare straight into camera, chilling effect
This one hits hard 🔥🍸
Her name sounds like "shinade" RIP amazing Irish artist - we will miss her so much
