Hello Brad & Lex ! Nightwish fans here, your musical quest summoned us. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing at Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K+ audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. As I saw, you enjoyed the powerful performance of the band. Hope you'll continue on this path. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " Hoping you'll continue this journey with us, I'll drop here a list of songs (with links) with the current lineup of the band you may like (please consider this list of links only as "a tip of the iceberg", an indication that they have a vast and very diverse repertoire, and not as something mandatory): "Storytime" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqqfu9mIer21frg.html "Romanticide" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) kzread.info/dash/bejne/rK6TmbF8c7TSiNY.html "Ever Dream" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4ydltBxlK3Jdps.html "Song Of Myself" live at Wacken 2013 (dark/metal) kzread.info/dash/bejne/noWpl7Ojmceuh8o.html "Dead Boy's Poem" - live Buenos Aires 2018 (soulful ballad) kzread.info/dash/bejne/hWx5la5wl8qyfbA.html "Ghost River" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) kzread.info/dash/bejne/YmmZy9adXainZqw.html "Dark Chest Of Wonders" live at Wacken 2013 (metal, the greatest show opener ever) kzread.info/dash/bejne/gaqDppixlcbWmJc.html "My Walden" live at Wembley 2015 (celtic / folk) kzread.info/dash/bejne/naKlx6txYJrAnLw.html "Sleeping Sun" live at Vizovice Masters of Rock festival 2016 (ballad) kzread.info/dash/bejne/ooqEtrd-h5S2dbA.html "The Islander" live at Tampere 2015 (Marco in charge..) kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKNs0MWEj5jRqsY.html "Stargazer" live at Tampere 2015 (operatic vocals / metal) kzread.info/dash/bejne/gJx516OJidDFhco.html "Alpenglow" live at Wembley 2015 (uplifting / metal) kzread.info/dash/bejne/eKZ-2K2TfqjOZ8o.html "Sahara" live at Tampa 2016 (middle eastern vibe) kzread.info/dash/bejne/noiqu8iFkZe9nM4.html "Slaying The Dreamer" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) kzread.info/dash/bejne/qXVoltajkbObnpM.html "I Want My Tears Back" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (celtic / folk vibe) kzread.info/dash/bejne/hnaDxsmxmsWWm7A.html "Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean" live In Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) kzread.info/dash/bejne/pmZq1MGvcby3YLQ.html "Weak Fantasy" live at Tampere 2015 (dark metal) kzread.info/dash/bejne/c4JmlZuJktTImtI.html "7 Days To The Wolves" live at Wembley 2015 (dark metal) kzread.info/dash/bejne/iqqnyNl6gMW9iMY.html And if you want to hear to be surprised by Floor's vocals :) then try "Yours Is An Empty Hope" live at Mexico City in 2015 kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqmru5OdXa6vo9Y.html Last but not the least - they just released their 9th studio album on April 10th 2020 named "Human :||: Nature" - just take a peek to their official playlist: kzread.info/head/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg (for example: "Shoemaker", the 3rd track from this album, tells the story of Eugene Shoemaker, one of the founders of planetary science, whose ash was sent on the Moon after his death, as a tribute from the scientific community ..) Yes the lyrics are bitter sweet but ordained. The strength of a woman to go into the pyre and burn with their deceased warrior husband in Viking heritage is to die for their fall. This song is both lore and heritage of some of Europe's first peoples before the current stage. It is love in both sentiment and violence. Sacrifice and yearning. A heritage greater than oneself. It speaks volumes to what we use to value (deep connections) and how shallow a stream we cuddle ourselves and those relationships in now. Im Aboriginal yet I really respect and love this band. History had real people in it that did such things, fueled by those robust human values and the passion of such things. Although not interested in burning for love. It was a fierce and sometimes indelible connection. : )

Some of the definitions include: a) an elaborate instrumental composition in three or more movements, similar in form to a sonata but written for an orchestra and usually of far grander proportions and more varied elements. b) an instrumental passage occurring in a vocal composition, or between vocal movements in a composition. c) anything characterized by a harmonious combination of elements, especially an effective combination of colors. d) harmony of sounds. Symphonic definitions include: suggestive of a symphony especially in form, interweaving of themes, or harmonious arrangement Any of those above can be applied to this type of music. There is no time limitations except those you put on it yourself. In general, Symphonic Music is the best way to describe this genre.

I think Floor would love being called a Dark Disney Princess! She's known as the Valkyrie which she's a bit embarrassed about but still embraces. You nailed it though, theatrical, operatic, dark Disney vibes. Tuomas (keyboardist) composed this song and 90% of all their songs and is known as the metal Mozart (because he's regarded as a modern composing genius) and he writes poetry type lyrics, at this sort of time of this show he had a real Dark Disney soundtrack thing going on at this time, although this song was written for their first singer who was an Opera singer. Now the band are more about Nature and the universe we exist in and how it came to be. Next album who knows what the vibe will be. Nightwish play more genres than any other band I can think of, all of it unique, all of it also quintessentially Nightwish at the same time. Celtic, orchestral, rock, thrash metal, operatic stuff even jazz. There's no genres to Nightwish, just music. Floor can sing everything from guttural metal growls to opera and even Disney as well as everything in-between. You haven't seen Troy yet, he plays... well...everything really. One of the most talented bands around with really humble down to earth members with no egos. And live, their shows are about as good as live music gets!

Thanks for finally reacting to Nightwish :)! The song is not everyone's cup of tea, because it is 10 minutes long and as the name already gives away, it is divided in scores. But it does draw you into a different world, so much that you tend to forget that this is an actual LIVE performance for a crowd of 82,000 people. As Brad is a "lyrics-man" this song might be pretty difficult to grasp (it is for me anyway ;)). The lyrics of The Poet and the Pendulum are much more straight forward, but please, before you react to that, read up on the lyrics and the meaning, as it is written at a crucial point in the history of the band. I would even go as far as to advise to keep that song for last. Keep up the good work and don't forget to check out Floor's (the singer of Nightwish) live performances on the Dutch TV show Beste Zangers 2019 :)!

@@XFreQ69 I apologize for misunderstanding; due to your original comment, I assumed you were saying you were a metalhead. And I'm not trying to make anyone like anything; I've met many people who didn't like a band after listening to one song, and then found out later that they just didn't like that particular song, but there were other songs from the same band that matched their tastes. Since "Nightwish" has such a huge diversity of songs, I encourage people to try more of their collection to see if there's anything that they like (which is why I recommended something that most of the self proclaimed metalheads amongst their fans tend to like, since I was under the assumption that's what you might like), but I'm not trying to pressure anyone in any way, shape, or form; if you like it, you like it, and if you don't, you don't. When I first heard Floor singing some of the early Tarja era songs (1996-2005) about 5 years ago, I wasn't a huge fan of it either (as I already liked Tarja's voice and singing style), but it has grown on me since. I just listened to some of your recommendation ("Loathe"); one song ("Two Way Mirror", I believe it was called) reminded of bands like "Red" and "Breaking Benjamin" (more of a post 2000 hard rock sound than metal), while a couple of other songs reminded me of "Slipknot" (and other thrash/death metal type sounds), and there were also a couple of instrumental songs (one slower and one a little faster), so I can see some diversity in their work. I enjoyed the first type but the almost fifty year old me isn't much into pure screaming anymore, so I can't say I really liked that part very much.

It’s a Symphonic Metal band with the best singer out there leading, nothing dark about them, their music mostly created by the keyboardist, is genius. They have a full Symphony, & chorus playing with them in background!

@Brad & Lex - so glad y'all finally got to this! Should you wish to continue your journey into Nightwish, Storytime Live from Wacken 2013 is next. This song is shorter than & very different from Ghost Love Score, all in excellent ways, of course! Let me say that with Nightwish, it's wise to have lyrics handy or have subtitles. Their lyrics are akin to poetry and often have deep meanings. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! GLS is one of their longer tracks. Though there are others clocking in at over 20 minutes. Most of their songs are over 5 min, longer than many are used to via radio play. Nightwish will always surprise you. They cover many styles and sounds. Most songs will surprise you in how different it is to the last one you heard. They have a HUGE catalog of music. Plenty to enjoy! They are the tightest live band I have ever seen. Floor is an amazing vocalist - classicaly trained with a crazy range. Floor is the Valkyrie Queen. Every single band member is amazing. Gabriel's list will not steer you wrong. It's a good progression to follow as the way they are listed truly offers an excellent path to get to know them and their music. I'm here for all of it! Hope you guys are well! PS - The flaming bull head that Lex saw is the logo for Wacken Open Air. It's one of, if not the biggest metal festivals in the world. It's a cattle field the rest of the year. And Lex had the pronunciation right - Vah-ken. Floor's last name is Jansen - pronounced Yahn-sen.

Funny, I guess you are the only reactors that I have been following for a bit that hadn't done a Nightwish song yet... Haven't watched much Nightwish lately, as I have been hooked to the Lorna Shore new EP for a couple a days now. But this got my psyched up for tomorrow, as then I will see Floor Jansen for the first time live (her solo tour)! Hope to see you do more Nightwish in the future.
