A lot of people assume Whitney Houston's version of this song is the original. But Dolly wrote this back in 1973. She wrote it as a farewell to her business partner & mentor Porter Wagoner, expressing her decision to pursue a solo career. Love Dolly's sweet version. Whitney made it into a powerhouse song.

Dolly was once asked if she regretted Whitney's version reaching higher accolades. She stated " When I wrote this song, I was able to open a bank account, When Whitney sang it..... I bought the bank."

Whitney did a cover nearly 20 years after Dolly wrote the song and had twice already had two number one hits on country radio with it. After Whitney's Bodyguard version, Dolly and Vince Gill charted it again in 1995 as a duet. So many younger people or non country listeners are usually astonished to find out Whitney Houston's biggest hit is actually Dolly Parton's song.

Dolly wrote this song (which was later recorded by Whitney Houston). The reason Dolly wrote this song was because she was on the Porter Wagoner show, which was a country western show years ago and she was getting to ready to leave the show to move on with her career, so she wrote it as a goodbye message and was singing it to Porter Wagoner❤ You definitely need time to dig into Dolly Parton, she's one of the best and most prolific songwriters in country music. She is a national treasure and has given Millions to charities. She's got an amazing vocal range and she sings gospel so beautifully. One of her most known songs is "Coat of Many Colors" that she wrote about her childhood, because her mother sewed pieces of scrap material together of different colors and made her a coat and she was so proud of that coat and when she went to school, the children teased her and make fun of it. Probably 4 or 5 years ago they made a movie of it and it was on TV❤

Dolly has written so many songs that other people have covered that it’s insane. Whitney Houston’s version of this song for “The Bodyguard” movie is the most famous though. Elvis wanted to record this song as well, but Col. Tom Parker wanted the copyrights to the song and Dolly refused to give them up to him. Apparently she cried through the night about Elvis not recording it because of Parker’s demands. In the end she made the right decision. Dolly wrote this song for her business partner Porter Wagner. Dolly wanted to leave “The Porter Wagner Show”, but Porter didn’t want her to. It became really contentious with Porter and Dolly told him “Porter you aren’t listening to a word that I am saying”. That night she wrote him this song because she knew that if she could get him to sit down and listen to it he might understand her making the choices that she was choosing for herself. After she finally got him to listen to it he told her that he would let her go without a fight as long as she recorded this song with him as a producer because “this is going to be a #1 record. Porter was right. It became a #1 record for both Dolly and Whitney. The part of the song where Dolly is talking was specifically added to get those words through to Porter the most. Dolly recorded it the same way. Whitney sang throughout her version. Dolly Parton has written over 5,000 songs in her lifetime (so far). She famously wrote this song and her hit song Jolene in the same night. Great Reaction!!

Dolly wrote it ! and sung it ! ELVIS wanted to record it but his manager demanded half ownership if ELVIS Recorded it but Dolly would not give up part ownership of the song so Elvis did not record the song, Dolly said she cried over ElVIS not recording it but Whitney Huston had a HUGE hit with the song. Dolly wrote the song because she was on a TV show called the Porter Wagner song and she was going to Leave the show and go on her own, she went to Porter Wagner and sang the song to him and told him she was leaving the show. He later sued her! So this song has a big history!

Thank you young man for playing one of Dolly Parton's 3,000 songs that she has written and sang. Now you know why she is regarded as "The Queen of Country Music". She is a Hall of Famer and has many Grammys and Oscars too. Not only that but she can also play about five or six musical instruments very well. Ask yourself this. Could someones net worth be over 650 million dollars sitting on their tail? She is as beautiful inside and out as you have just heard. Ciuld you play another one of my many favorite songs by Dolly Parton for me and tell me what you think of it please? Also can you tell me what you think of it? Please? The name of it is, "Me and Little Andy". Thank you so much young man. Have a Blessed day. Adios.

Whitney houston did a cover of this that ended up being her signature song and completely transformed her career. Dolly was one of those artists that was a prolific songwriter and has written hundreds of songs over the decades that were either covered by or specifically written for another singer. She could live several more lifetimes without ever having to lift a finger from the royalty checks that keep rolling in.

I believe this clip is from the Porter Wagoner Show. Porter introduces Dolly saying that she has a nice little song for the audience. She’s actually singing it to Porter as a kind of fair well as she’s setting out on her own after several years on the show. There’s a full video on utube. Dolly’s version is more heartfelt while Whitney’s is a full on knock you out of your seat blast. Dolly also sings it to Burt Reynolds the the musical comedy “The Best Little Whore House in Texas”. A movie I highly suggest. Thanks for the review

This video is not the one from the Porter Wagoner Show, but it's very, very similar to it. She's wearing a similar red dress, but the lights are up in the Porter Wagoner video, and Porter introduces her and comes back for a tiny bit of chat with her at the end. But the way she sings the song is EXACTLY the same.

Coat of Many Colors is a great song to react to. It is autobiographical. She grew up dirt poor. Jolene is probably her biggest hit. She has a new album coming out soon called Rockstar that will be a bunch of duets with some of the big names of rock. It was really odd that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted her last year even though she was not a rock artist at all. One of the classiest ladies ever.

Just a bit of trivia/information, we know Whitney covered it in the Bodyguard, but another very popular song Whitney sung in that movie was "I Have Nothing" which was written by David Foster and Linda Thompson, Linda wrote the lyrics.. Linda had been a long time Girlfriend of Elvis and lived with him at Graceland for several years... Linda wrote The lyrics to I have Nothing with Elvis in Mind... . Whitneys mum Cissy Houtson was also one of Elvis' backing singers when he returned to Vegas in 69 -

Dolly originally wanted ELVIS to do this song, it was as good as a done deal, she was going to go to the recording studio when Elvis cut it - But then stepped up Elvis Manager Tom Parker and wanted 50% of the Publishing rights, Dolly couldn't agree to it so the deal was shelved, it really upset ehr because she really wanted him to sing the song.. She said some years later that Priscilla presley had told her that on the day of their divorce Elvis sang this song to priscilla (wether true or not I don't know)
