"Coat of Many Colors" tugs at the heart strings. A more recent time Dolly sang "I Will Always Love You " on CMT, giving the history of why she wrote it -- kzread.info/dash/bejne/nKZs1siffquwntI.html She has kept ownership of all the songs she has written, and is still getting royalties from Whitney's version.

Dolly not only wrote this, she also took it to number one TWICE, before Whitney recorded it. Whitney took it to number one for a THIRD time! Then Dolly released it again with Vince Gill and it was only on an album. The version by Dolly and Vince went to about number 14 and I firmly believe that if they had released it as a single it would have hit number one for a fourth time! Whitney blasted this song out and showed off her magnificent voice. This heartfelt version by Dolly sounded like she meant it because she did. She sang it to tell Porter Wagoner, with whom she had worked for seven years that the five years they had agreed to was over and she was leaving him. Porter had been a member of the Grand Ole Opry and he had his own show on television and been an established star before Dolly ever hit Nashville. When he hired her to be on his show she was a nobody but he soon realized that SHE was the draw to his show and he also realized that when she left, his show would take a HUGE hit and it did. In fact, her leaving had such a negative impact on his show (and therefore his finances) that he sued her! This song had been her way of telling him that she didn't wish him any harm but she had more than fulfilled the five years she had promised him she would work for him and it was time for her to move on. And we can't forget that this beautiful and haunting version by Dolly was performed LIVE!
The thing I love best about this song is how Dolly reacted to Whitney's version. Q: "What did you think when you first heard Whitney's version of your song?" Dolly " I am going to be rich."
Dolly wrote this song. Elvis wanted to buy the song but Dolly said no. She allow Whitney to use it. She's a very good song writer, actor, business women, humanitarian and an amazing singer with a huge heart ♥

Not the Whole Story. Dolly wrote this song and Wanted Elvis to sing this song and Elvis wanted to sing it, because he was going through a divorce. But Elvis's Manager blew the whole thing up by demanding 50% of publishing rights to the song and Dolly refused. Elvis was really upset with his Manager. Dolly said in an interview that she cried herself to sleep that night because she was a huge Elvis Fan and really wanted him to Sing it. She learned later that Elvis sang it to Priscilla the Day their Divorce was Finalized and Dolly said she was pleased that he got to sing it to her. In the E L V I S Movie they chose to just depict Elvis mouthing the words...... "I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU" To Priscilla, just before he boarded his Plane.

Dolly is a treasure of the human race. She is simply a Good Person.
She wrote this song and Jolene on the same day. Amazing.
Dolly isn't just the originator, this is one of the thousands (literally, not an exaggeration) of songs she has written.
Dolly is a treasure of this world.
Crazy by Patsy Cline - written by Willie Nelson. One of the best ever.
This was one of her first performances of it. Find a recent one of her doing it where she tells the story behind it & it is still sweet like this, but more polished. Long story short, she used to be on a TV show called the Porter Wagoner show. She signed on for 5 years & when her contract was up, he did not want her to leave the show. He argued & pushed & she finally said you aren't listening, so I wrote a song, explaining how I feel & made him set down & she sang it to him. And yes, Dolly is 100% country, born in a little shack.
Dolly Parton is not just a singer she is a song writer who has composed over 5000 songs. She not only sang this song first she composed this song.

That's right there with Vern Gosdin's "Chiseled in Stone". The crazy part is is that George Jones didn't want to do that song.
Dolly's version is what I grew up with. Hers was gentle and sad. I loved Whitney's version as well. Hers was more about confidence and power. Amazing how the same words take on different meanings.
She wrote it in 1974 as a goodbye to her co-host on a country show she was on.

She wrote it for Porter Wagner. They sang as a duo. He was her friend and mentor, and she was leaving to begin her solo career.
Hard not to compare the versions. Whitney had the power to make the song her own, but Dolly's version seems more heartfelt. No belting out the words, she's just sitting down and singing her heart out. Love it. Thanks for reviewing!

Because Dolly is singing it TO someone. Saying Goodbye, I still love you. 😢
Keep in mind, she sang that live, and in a seated position. There is a reason people sing standing up, because singing while seated is more difficult. Dolly has written thousands of songs in her lifetime. She has many famous songs besides this one, 9 to 5, Coat of Many Colors, Jolene, but personally, I love the song My Tennessee Mountain Home because the lyrics paint such a vivid picture, and Dolly has also sang many gospel and spiritual songs, and her song Hello God, is also one of my favorites. It's hard to pick any single song when she's had a career that is 60 years long. The song Little Sparrow is also a favorite.

Dolly wrote this song about Porter Wagoner .. she was leaving the show so this was a tribute to Porter.
I think if you asked any female country singer, who is the greatest of all time, Dolly is going to be up there, but the OG that you should listen to who blazed the way for Dolly and all who came after her, is Patsy Cline and the song to start with is Crazy, written by a very young Willie Nelson. Patsy's voice transcends all music genres and is as fresh and enchanting as it was when it was recorded over 60 years ago.

Another Uber great thing about Dolly is her push to develop the next generation of readers. She will send a book for you to read to your kids every month if you ask.
What talent she is! Songwriting, singing, acting , philanthropy… the list goes on!
She wrote this song to sing to Porter Wagoner as a plea to let her go and begin her own solo career. It is sung from the heart, and he let her go after hearing her sing it, but he had to have her sing it on his show first. Just a great song from a great person.
I just heard Dolly Parton sing Wrecking Ball with Miley Cyrus. It gave me the chills. Their voices blend so well together. Dolly is Miley’s godmother. Her father, Billy Ray Cyrus toured with Dolly years ago. They did a few songs together as well. Miley Cyrus, Faith Hill, and Lee Ann Rimes are also very talented. Tammy Wynette was a great singer.
This is a country song. Do you know the story behind Dolly writing it? She wrote it for her friend Porter Wagner who's tv Variety show she was on for many years. He gave her her start. When she was ready to leave his show to pursue a solo career which he was against, she wrote this song for him. Knowing the history behind it and that it was a real story really makes a difference. Side note. If you see dolly singing she wrote it. She was always singer. The movies came way later.
Dolly and Willie Nelson wrote some of our most beautiful songs from 1950s on.
Dolly wrote this for Porter Wagner. Dolly was on a TV show with Porter Wagner and she was always second banana. As her confidence grew, she decided she wanted to spread her wings, but she didn't really want to hurt Porters feelings. So, she wrote this to say good bye to him.
Doly Parton not only has a beautiful voice but is a beautiful and amazing human, one of a kind .
It was personal to her .She writes from the heart.
Coat of many colors is a beautiful song dolly wrote and sung its a true story.
Dolly Parton’s love is like a butterfly song is beautifully written.
Dolly is a recording artist, songwriter, actor, & massively generous philanthropist! She wrote this song & "Jolene" on the same day! Yes, Whitney's version is a power house ballad which I love but I've always preferred Dolly's version. A sweet, gentle, heartfelt "good-bye" song she wrote for a friend, not a lover. So this song could be for anyone special in your life, it doesn't have to be a romantic partner. In Dolly's case, she was saying good-bye to a mentor & business partner. She started out on a TV program called the Porter Wagoner show. She even recorded songs & toured with him as well. She wrote this song for Porter as a way to say good-bye when she left his show to be a solo artist, like Patsy Cline & Loretta Lynn. She is a master story teller & has composed over 5000 songs over the span of her life (some were recorded by her, some were given to other singers, & many never were released to the public). My dad (age 87) is a life long fan of Dolly's, so I was lucky to grow up with most of her music. My favorites from Dolly are "Coat of Many Colors", "Me and Little Andy", "Jolene", "9 to 5" and her duet with Kenny Rogers "Islands in the Stream" (written by The Gee Gees). Dolly is a living legend & a national treasure - this is a deep rabbit hole to explore as she has a vast library of music. I almost forgot - she was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She tried to turn down the nomination as she's always thought of herself as a country music star. But they included her anyway. So to fix that, she is now recording her very first ROCK album. She just finished recording a song with Stevie Nicks (of Fleetwood Mac) & she's talking with other artists to appear on her album (Pat Benatar, Debbie Harry, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Steve Perry, & Pink just to name a few...)
Dolly Parton is so incredible. I also love Chris Stapleton. He is country with blues and his voice is so incredible and distinct. Tennessee Whiskey by him is a great song!
Coat of many colors. Dolly Parton! Thank you
The song " I will always love you" was written by Dolly while preforming on the Porter Wagner show. She was about to leave the show and she wrote the song to express her love for Porter Wagner. Dolly also wrote the song "Jolene" on the same day. Another song to listen to is " Islands in the stream" which was sung by the duet of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. To find out more : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolly_Parton
She's a pioneer and Whitney took it to a new level with the incredible power she had to reach a new audience. Which I think is wonderful because it allowed this song to touch more ears. James Taylor and Zach Brown band are a perfect start to your country music journey. Thank you POLO
Dolly has always been the real deal. Incredible singer song writer from the beginning, changed country and Nashville along every step of her journey, and remains an influence across many genres of music far beyond her pure country origins.
Almost EVERY Country Countdown ends with one of these two songs at #1. "The Dance" by Garth Brooks "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones If you love songs that tell stories with amazing lyrics like I do, here are a few of my All-Time Favorites: "Mama's Broken Heart" by Miranda Lambert "I'll Think of a Reason Later" by Lee Ann Womack "Suds in the Bucket" by Sara Evans "The Thunder Rolls" by Garth Brooks "Stripes" by Brandy Clark "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" by George Strait "All Over But The Cryin' " by The Georgia Satellites "Hard Candy Christmas" by Dolly Parton "When It Rains It Pours" by Luke Combs "Merry Go Round" by Kacey Musgraves

Dolly is an incredible songwriter. So many amazing songs over the decades and she's still putting out new music. "Better get to Livin'" is an amazing song with a great message and a good video, it shows Dolly's attitude to life and why at 77 she's still going strong
I've heard it countless times but by damn here I am again in tears! Dolly, Emmylou, Willie, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Gillian Welch... broke the country mold so they are categorized as Alternative Country. Listen to as many Dolly and Emmylou songs as you can! I love Dolly's In My Tennessee Mountain Home.
The first time I heard this song I bawled my head off. The preacher found his lost soul, and she raised up a man of God.
Check out: George Jones songs - “He Stopped Loving Her Today” & “If Drinking Don’t Kill Me (Her Memory Will)” & “The Grand Tour”
Dolly is of the purest heart and Soul. The very definition of a Sweet Heart
Dolly wrote this song in 1974 as a way to tell Porter Wagoner that she needs to leave the show when he would not let her out of her contract after 7 years. Elvis wanted to record it but his manager wanted half the publishing rights and Dolly said no. Smartest move she made. A number of other artists covered the song including Linda Ronstadt as did Whitney for the movie "The Bodyguard" Dolly is an iconic American treasure. Not only has she been producing number 1 country hits for 30+ years, but she has been producing number 1 hits for multiple artists for just as long.
I am an old white lady who just discovered your channel and subscribed. I love watching the "younger generation" discover great music from us oldsters.
I can’t name one song as my favorite country song but my favorite Dolly Parton song is Coat of many colors 😊
Every time l hear her sing this it gives me chills. So beautiful
Whitney no question had a powerful, beautiful voice one of the best of our lives, but the way Dolly delivers this song in her understated, soft way touches the heart in a way Whitney's didn't. Maybe it's because Dolly wrote it and sang it from the heart to her mentor Porter Wagoner when she wanted to leave his show and wanted to branch out on her own. She loved and respected Porter and wanted to remain on good terms with him.
Its beautiful that dolly also gave whitney so much credit for her version. Shes the least jealous person in music.
She calls it a " simple little song" but fir us she is our Tennessee song bird 🐦
Still get goosebumps hearing her sing this-then I tear up.
She also was an credited producer of the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She gives out books with her literacy program and when the mines dried up around her birthplace in TN, she built Dollywood to become the biggest employer in the area and prevented the area from financially drying up.
Kenny Rogers and Dolly were best friends for many many years! They performed SO many concerts together. Please react to their last duet recorded together. Sadly, Kenny has passed now...but the show must go on!! It is named "You Can't Make Old Friends!" AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL... Make sure you get the one where they are talking about their friendship first!!
Dolly Parton wrote this song and many others that have stood the test of time. She’s amazing .
This was an early performance of the song, and I really like it. While Whittney’s version feels grand and even epic in the sweeping and soaring vocals, beautifully sung by a very talented singer… This performance by Dolly feels smaller, more personal and intimate, which makes it hit harder on the feels IMO. If I remember correctly, the person she wrote this about was the guy that sits next to her and talks to her at the end of this performance. They were never in a relationship, she was a performer on his TV show, and she wanted to quit and go do her own thing. The song was written to express her feelings about leaving. It is a song about platonic love, but it works as a song about romantic love. Dolly is one of those people that wants to make the world a better place, and has worked to do so. She has many charities and other humanitarian works that she funds personally. I’m a metal head at heart, but I can enjoy good and real music from any genre.
Coat of many Colors by Dolly is beautiful
Dolly was and is simply Dolly. Everything about her music and her in general were so very real--approachable. Like she could be a sister, mother, daughter, child, friend. Dolly's heart was always on display when she performed, & it was like she welcomed everyone to see her vulnerabilities. That's a very rare thing. She is truly a treasure.
Highway Men, this should rock your country world! Legendary!
Charlie Daniels - Devil went down to Georgia. ♥️
You are awesome, to listen to this song. Such a beautiful lady, her songs come from her heart.
Interestingly, Dolly wrote this not primarily as a romantic song (although the lyrics leave open that interpretation), but in its original meaning it was intended to end a business relationship with the country star who gave her career its big break. She was a regular on the popular Porter Wagoner Show until her career took off, and she wanted to go out on her own, but Porter wanted to keep her (and her fame) close to him. So this was Dolly's 'break-up' song, so to speak, and after she sang it to him in his office, Porter finally relented. They stayed friends over the years (as the song says she wanted), with Dolly even bailing him out of a financial problem involving taxes and ownership of his song catalog (her idea, not his). Finally, as he lay dying, surrounded by friends and family, Dolly came by and sang it to him one last time. She truly is a national treasure, as well as a great lady!
Suggestions? It depends on the mood. If you want something that'll tear your heartstrings, go with George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today" or Kathy Mattea's "Where've You Been". If you want fun, try Mary Chapin-Carpenter's "I Feel Lucky" and "The Bug", Brooks and Dunn's "Boot Scoot Boogie", or Glenn Miller's "Little Brown Jug". There's too many categories to choose from. I guess my top pick (for today) would be Brooks and Dunn's "Believe" - it's lovely, but makes me grab a hanky, so fair warning ;)
This is originally DOLLYS song.Other good ones from her Joline and Coat of many colors. There is also a movie about it.Also Loretta Lynn Coal miners Daughter a movie as well. They deserve sections in your playlist too.

This is definiely country. Dolly Parton is a gifted singer and a prodigious songwriter, not to mention businesswoman and philanthropist. She's just a powerhouse.
Did you see the history of this song? She wanted to leave the producer/label who helped bring her into popular music. She wrote this as a goodbye.
Not a big country fan either, but Dolly is ALWAYS great. I like Brooks and Dunn "Believe" it is a story of one of them growing up and being befriended by an older man down the road. Stunning lyrics and video.

This song was special to her, it is about her break-up with her singing partner, Porter Wagoner. I remember her singing this at the end of every one of her tv shows.

POLO, 👆 correct. These are a handful yet probably most popular women country singers. Men county singers; Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, George Strait, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, etc.....😮💨
My favorite from childhood (I was raised on this stuff, btw) was Crystal Gayle's "Don't it make my brown eyes blue" (and yes, when you see her, it is real and it is natural -- that'll make more sense when you see her from back in the day)
Makes me cry every time I hear her sing this song! She wrote this song. Elvis wanted to sing it. He had to own 51% of anything he sang. She said no when women didn't! She also performed it in the movie "Little Workhouse in Texas"....with Burt Reynolds... She is a POWERHOUSE businesswoman!!!!
I love her version so much more than the movie one; Dolly sings it like her throat is tight with tears. Gentle and heartbroken. The movie version was too loud for my taste. I don't like much country, but one called "I know where love lives" by Hal Ketchum is happy and heartfelt.

I said in another video Roy Clark Yesterday. If you listen to the words you will reflect on the things you have done. A good song will do that to you.
It absolutely is country, but older country differs from a lot of more modern country on many levels, as the older country was very narrative like this. I am so glad you discovered her and enjoy her music all these years later.
This is what country used to be. No the pseudo rock they play today. Check out Conway Twitty's "Hello Darlin" if you want real country.
