Stuff of legends - literally! It would take hours, but Porter Waggoner was a music star in Nashville. Dolly worked with, co-wrote, sang on his show for years. When she decided to split for a solo career, it was a heart-rending time. She wrote this for Porter as a goodbye note to to her partner, and went on to be a superstar - and all-around excellent person. And Dolly (at 73) knocks it out of the park today. She just had a cable special.

Dolly wrote this song when she wanted to leave Porter Waggoner's show and go out on her own. It was written to Porter and how she appreciated the start he gave her on his show. Whitney sang it for the movie "Bodyguard" and later Carrie Underwood covered the song. She did an amazing job.

She also has a theme park where she was born called Dollywood where she employees many of her family and relatives to work there. She also pays for anyone of her relatives to go to college as a gift when they graduate high school. Dolly is one of those amazing people that seem to only come around a few times every 100 years! So talented in so many ways and personality and down to earth. Still married to the same guy since the beginning. Fame and success didn’t change her at all! I am fascinated by her because no one in my generation or current generation comes close to her as a human being.

Dolly has such a beautiful crystal clear voice. I don't know if anybody has said this in the comments. But Elvis wanted to record this song, but Dolly refused, but she gave it to Whitney. Dolly was at Glastonbury a few years ago and the security were even dancing to Jolene. She doesn't take herself too seriously, she once said "It takes a lot of money to look this cheap." And when asked who did her hair she said "I don't know, I'm never with it." referring to her wigs. Classy, down to earth lady.

Dolly didn't let Elvis sing this bc the Colonel, his manager, demanded at least half of the rights to any song he recorded. Batman stopped him from doing so many wonderful things.I wish he had gone ahead and record it anyway and a duet with Dolly on it would have been out of this world!

When Porter fell on Hard times she bought the songs out of bankruptcy and GIFTED them to him to get on his feet. When Porter died ( long illness) Dolly paid his treatment bills and visited him. She sang this song to him as he passed. THAT is who DOLLY is.

Where Dolly grew up in Tennessee there were few jobs and most people lived strictly off the land and the sweat of their brow. After much thought, Dolly decided the best way to improve the daily lives of her impoverished friends and family was to bring in an industry suited to the strengths of the people. She developed Dollywood, a tourist destination where visitors can enjoy watching locals crafting soaps, candles, glassware, fabrics, butters, etc along with a variety of other shows and eateries. Shake my head every time some celebrity says they support the needy. If they really did, here is the perfect template to bring jobs to an impoverished community.

Dolly wrote it for Porter Wager when she was leaving his show. Later he became bitter that she left because his ratings tanked. It was pretty nasty between them. But when he was down on his luck and had to sell his music catalog, she bought it. When he got back on his feet, she gave it back to him as a gift. Before he died, she would go to his hospital room and sing for him. This song hit number one in three consecutive decades, when she first recorded it in the 70s, then when it was the soundtrack of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas in the 80s, and then when Whitney Houston took it to number one in the 90s. Check out the Forever Country video where it is included as one of the top three iconic country songs. @

Parton is one of the most-honored female country performers of all time. The Record Industry Association of America has certified 25 of her single or album releases as either Gold Record, Platinum Record or Multi-Platinum Record. She has had 26 songs reach No. 1 on the Billboard country charts, a record for a female artist. She has 42 career top-10 country albums, a record for any artist, and 110 career-charted singles over the past 40 years. All-inclusive sales of singles, albums, collaboration records, compilation usage, and paid digital downloads during Parton's career have reportedly topped 100 million records around the world.[125] Parton has earned nine Grammy Awards (including her 2011 Lifetime Achievement Grammy) and a total of 49 Grammy Award nominations, the 2nd most nominations of any female artist in the history of the prestigious awards.[126][127] At the American Music Awards, she has won three awards out of 18 nominations. At the Country Music Association, she has won 10 awards out of 42 nominations. At the Academy of Country Music, she has won seven awards and 39 nominations. She is one of only six female artists (including Reba McEntire, Barbara Mandrell, Shania Twain, Loretta Lynn, and Taylor Swift), to win the Country Music Association's highest honor, Entertainer of the Year (1978). She also has been nominated for two Academy Awards and a Tony Award. She was nominated for an Emmy Award for her appearance in a 1978 Cher television special. She was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her music in 1984, located at 6712 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California; a star on the Nashville StarWalk for Grammy winners;[128] and a bronze sculpture on the courthouse lawn in Sevierville. She has called that statue of herself in her hometown "the greatest honor", because it came from the people who knew her. Parton was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1969, and in 1986 was named one of Ms. Magazine's Women of the Year. In 1986, she was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.[129][130] In 1999, Parton received country music's highest honor, an induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.[131] She received an honorary doctorate degree from Carson-Newman College (Jefferson City, Tennessee) in 1990.[132] This was followed by induction into the National Academy of Popular Music/Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001.[133] In 2002, she ranked No. 4 in CMT's 40 Greatest Women of Country Music. Parton has received 46 Grammy Award nominations, tying her with Bruce Springsteen for the most Grammy nominations and positioning her in tenth place overall.[134] Parton was honored in 2003 with a tribute album called Just Because I'm a Woman: Songs of Dolly Parton. The artists who recorded versions of Parton's songs included Melissa Etheridge ("I Will Always Love You"), Alison Krauss ("9 to 5"), Shania Twain ("Coat of Many Colors"), Meshell Ndegeocello ("Two Doors Down"), Norah Jones ("The Grass is Blue"), and Sinéad O'Connor ("Dagger Through the Heart"). Parton herself contributed a re-recording of the title song, originally the title song for her first RCA album in 1968. Parton was awarded the Living Legend Medal by the U.S. Library of Congress on April 14, 2004, for her contributions to the cultural heritage of the United States.[135] She is also the focus of a Library of Congress collection exploring the influences of country music on her life and career. The collection contains images, articles, sheet music, and more.[136] President George W. From left: singer-songwriter William "Smokey" Robinson; composer Andrew Lloyd Webber; Dolly Parton; film director Steven Spielberg; and conductor Zubin Mehta In 2005, she was honored with the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given by the U.S. government for excellence in the arts. The award is presented by the U.S. President. On December 3, 2006, Parton received the Kennedy Center Honors from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for her lifetime of contributions to the arts. During the show, some of country music's biggest names came to show their admiration. Carrie Underwood performed "Islands in the Stream" with Rogers, Parton's original duet partner. Krauss performed "Jolene" and duetted "Coat of Many Colors" with Twain. McEntire and Reese Witherspoon also came to pay tribute. On November 16, 2010, Parton accepted the Liseberg Applause Award, the theme park industry's most prestigious honor, on behalf of Dollywood theme park during a ceremony held at IAAPA Attractions Expo 2010 in Orlando, Florida.[137] In 2015, a newly discovered species of fungus found growing in the southern Appalachians was named Japewiella dollypartoniana in honor of Parton's music and her efforts to bring national and global attention to that region.[138] In 2018, Parton received a second star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, inducted alongside Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris in recognition of their work as a trio.[139] Parton was also recognized in the Guinness World Records 2018 Edition for holding records for the Most Decades with a Top 20 hit on Billboard's Hot Country Songs Chart and Most Hits on Billboard's Hot Country Songs Chart by a Female Artist.[140] Hall of Fame honors[edit] During her career, Parton has gained induction into numerous Halls of Fame. Dolly wrote it. It's about her splitting up with Porter (her mentor that gave her her start on TV). It's literally a true goodbye love song. It was her biggest Country hit ever. Then Whitney did it and it was the biggest song evah. As a writer of the song Dolly has made millions upon millions off sales of Whitneys' version.

This is Dolly's song. Whitney covered it for the movie The Bodyguard. This is the only song in music history to go to the top of the charts TWICE by each of them. Once for each when they recorded it. For Dolly , it was used for a movie she was in and that went to the chart again but Whitney it was for her cover then again it went to the charts when she died

BrosReact 0151 + Dolly recently did a collaboration with Contemporary Christian Artists "For King & Country" (they're British Brothers I think) titled, "God Only Knows". It's phenomenal. Also "He's Alive" Live is out of this world. And one of her much earlier numbers is "Me & Little Andy" which REEEALLY showcases her unique talent & voice, & song writing ability. Along with what I already mentioned, it's one of my all time favorites.

Dolly Parton is the best celebrity ever. She was a modest sex symbol. She could have been a super model. The best female singer in history. And a lot of people don’t know, she was hilarious. Check out some interviews

Dolly grew up in a one-room cabin in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, as one of twelve siblings. Her father never learned to read and she had very few books in the home and read mostly at school.

Just so you know Dolly wrote this song and it was originally released in 1974 and went to #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Charts, then Dolly re-released it as a track for the soundtrack "Best Little Whorehouse In Texas" a movie she did with Burt Reynolds then it went to #1 for the second time in a row in 1982. That feat of having a song reach #1 twice in different years has only been done once before and that was with Chubby Checker song "The Twist" which went to #1 in 1960 and again in 1962. Then Whitney covered Dolly's song in 1992 and it went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Yes as many are saying Dolly did write this song! But she wrote it for the great country singer Porter Wagner! Porter had a television show and Dolly was under his wing and on the show every week! She decided it was time for her to move on and sang this song on her last appearance on his show for him!

I first heard this song when Dolly sang it in 'Best Little Whorehouse in Texas' to Burt Reynolds's character. Whitney worked hard and hit the notes, but for Dolly it is so effortless and just floats out of her mouth perfectly.

My favourite story about Dolly Parton is that her mentor Porter Wagoner resented her leaving to go out on her own. He came on hard times and lost everything, but Dolly bought all the rights to his songs and gave them back to him as a gift with no strings attached. This healed the rift and they were friends again until he died. They call her 'The Iron Butterfly' because she won't ever sell any of her songs. Anyone who sings them has to pay the copyright fee. That's why Elvis never recorded 'I Will Always Love You', as his manager Col. Parker wouldn't let Elvis sing a song he didn't own.
