You should check out her version on the actual Porter Wagoner show. After Dolly left the show Porter Wagoner eventually became bitter and spoke ill of her. Still, when he became bankrupt and was about to sell his catalogue of songs, Dolly bought them. Then she gave them back to him. She’s the classiest class act.

Yes, Whitney butchered it. Dolly nuanced it and her song had so much more quality. Whitney just belted it out. I’d comment to people that Dolly’s version was better and they’d ask ‘who’s Dolly”?. 🤪

Yes, Dolly Parton wrote the song. She sang it first. It was a country hit, did not make the pop charts. You need to go an listen to her songs, and she wrote most of them. She has depth and color to her voice, and conveys meaning. Now, Whitney Houston did a fantastic cover, and made the song an even bigger hit. One artist does not take away anything from the other here.

Dolly is a prolific musician. She has written over FIVE THOUSAND songs and has recorded nearly a thousand of them herself. She also plays the guitar, dulcimer, autoharp, banjo, fiddle, and saxophone. Dolly isn't just a musician, she has been in several movies. She's a fabulously successful business woman as well, she has a net worth of $650 million dollars. She's also a great philanthrapist. Just for starters: Her Imagination Library has given over 100 million books to poor kids. She has paid for uniforms and instrument fees for several school bands. She started her highly successful Dollywood theme part to provide employment to the area, all 11 thousand employees are eligible to have their college tuition paid for. There is a bald eagle sanctuary at Dollywood. Dolly invested her royalties from the Whitney Houston cover of this song in a strip mall serving a black area of Nashville. Her Dollywood Foundation provided $12.5 million to poor folks impacted by wildfires in the Smokey Mountains. Dolly has been married to her husband Carl Thomas Dean for 56 years. Part of the secret of their marriage is that he stays in the background and lets her be her. They were unable to have children, which is perhaps part of the reason she has done so much to help other children. Dolly also has a sister, Stella Parton, who is a successful musician in her own right, having recorded 36 albums. Dolly once was asked if she's bothered by "dumb blond" jokes. Her answer? “I'm not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I'm not dumb - and I'm not blonde."

Whitney was born in 1963. Dolly wrote this in 1967. Dolly's version is a personal love letter to her friend & boss & Whitney's version was done like the Diva she played in the movie 'the Bodyguard' which is when she debuted the song. Both versions are beautiful, but like totally different songs. Can you imagine writing that song overnight? There is a video of Dolly singing it the first time on KZread too. She was a baby back then. LOL Dolly jokes that Whitney made her rich. LOL Elvis wanted to do it too, but he also wanted the rights to it, but she refused to give them to him. She said he could record it but not own it. So, Elvis turned it down. Whitney didn't. LOL Dolly is the richest country entertainer in the world. She has a foundation that has given away millions of books to millions of children & donates millions to charities & after disasters etc. Fun fact, Dolly sings this in an old comedy western 'The best little whorehouse in Texas'. Guess who the madam is? LOL VERY fun movie. Also, in November 2023, she released a new album called 'Rockstar' & she has covered some classics with several huge stars. And she did the halftime show at the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving game 2023. She is now 77 years young & was wearing a cowboys cheerleader uniform & looked amazing! It's also here on KZread.

Porter Wagoner was in love with Dolly. She knew it but her ambition was strong and she wanted her freedom. You have to remember that this was a goodbye song to Porter Wagner as she wanted to leave the Porter Wagner show. There was a legal fight between them and Porter won, with Dolly having to pay money she did not have. I think there were rights to songs included in the lawsuit. But Dolly paid. Many years later Porter ran into tuff times financially, and despite their rocky past, Dolly truly did love him (as a person, not romantically) because she was there to help him out. They had a friendship.

Dolly Parton is one of the most prolific song writers alive today. She sang that song to Burt Reynolds in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". To date she has written more that 4000 songs.

Dolly is also a huge philanthropist and job creator. Not only did she build the Dollywood theme park in her hometown (which employs a ton of people) she also started the Buddy Program which promised middle schoolers $500 if they graduated high school, which reduced the dropout rate from 35% to 6%. She also has an organization called the Imagination Library where you can sign up your child at birth and they mail you a book a month to age 5.

Sorry, but Dolly is from Locust Ridge. DollyWood is in pigeon forge. Those 2 places are 5 hrs apart. Pigeon forge is a bigger town. Dolly didn't want her small home town to be associated with a big amusement park because it would make it a tourist trap.

Dolly has so many songs that will hit you hard. She is also a firecracker with a wicked sense of humor. She wrote this song and Jolene in the same day. Also if want to react to a group of guys name Home Free, you will get hit with so many requests to react to them from their fans called Home Fries it will explode your numbers like crazy.

Porter was a fading star when he hired Dolly for his TV show. She was just 21 years old in 1967 when hired by Porter Wagoner, whose oldest child was about three years younger than Dolly. She had to get free to pursue her own stardom since she was having number one hits. I recommend her songs: Light of a Clear Blue Morning, Jolene, Little Sparrow, Down from Dover, 9 to 5, Sandy's Song, Try, Together You and I, Here I Am, Hello God and many more.

Dolly wrote the song for herself to sing to a friend she was saying goodbye to. It was sweet with a touch of sadness. Elvis wanted it but she didn’t want to give up the rights. Whitney covered it, singing it to a lover with passion. Different singers to different audiences. No real comparison here.

It was that criminal "Colonel" Tom Parker who was greedy and wanted to own all rights to this song. I'm sure if she would have talked to Elvis himself they would have come to an agreement. Elvis was a humble person who always cared for other people, just like Dolly. But it was a good decision that she didn't give the rights to Parker.

Dolly is also one of the few people who took the words from the pundit Bill O'Reilly's mouth. He referred to her "bosom", and she said, "oh these? You know, I don't know if I'm supporting them or they're supporting me!" Check out Jolene and Coat of Many Colors, the latter is actually some of the story of her childhood. She grew up poor. Oh, in country music, Kenny Rogers was nicknamed "The Silver Fox". It fit.

released by Dolly in like 1974. This maybe 14-15 years ago. Legend says she wrote Jolene same night. After Porter heard her do the song, he let her go, "As long as he could produce the song" There are separate interviews with Kevin Costner, David Foster, Whitney, and Dolly how this song got picked for Bodyguard. Dolly wrote and performs it as she is doing it directly to "one person" for saying good-bye to a former partner in a sweetly gentle but "we done" message.

My friend, Dolly Parton is a national treasure. Her song composition goes beyond several thousand songs since she started her career. She is also a business woman. Singers like Elvis Presley and I believe Frank Sinatra among others wanted to buy the rights of that song. Her answer was always "no". This was her signature song until Kevin Costner suggested the song to the producers of "The Body Guard" . Well you know the rest. She wanted Whitney to have her song. That transaction was multi- millionaire. Both singers came out winning. But, yes this was a personal song written with much love and the greatest of intentions. You should hear another song of hers. "Coat of Many Colors." Is one of her hits and one of my favorites. Thank you for bringing Dolly to your channel!❤

Dolly's facade is one of the greatest in entertainment history. She will readily admit it is an act. An interviewer once asked her how long it took to do her hair. She said she didn't know because she was never there. She has a long time personal aide, who must be amazing, and a loving husband. And, she loves to perform. She doesn't preach in her music, she tells stories. I am here to watch.

Dolly is absolutely amazing -- and yes John Denver still brings tears to my eyes sometimes ... so sad we lost him so young! Yes, she wrote the song to say Goodbye to Porter Wagner -- Elvis Presley wanted to release the song - but for Elvis to he wanted all the rights to the song and Dolly wouldn't do that - so she told Elvis no -- who tells Elvis no!! She did allow Whitney to release the song which did not include losing all rights to it!! So Dolly can sing it forever and ever! She sang it in the movie- The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas that she did with Burt Reynolds.....
