great track. a 12-minute montage of a bunch of gags and skits and short tracks they had left over when assembling paul's boutique. so they just put them all into one long track. it's brilliant.

Yup. I had to order this album (not a tape). Run DMC were rocking they Adidas back then. Public Enemy "Yo Bum Rush the Show" is an album to check. "My 98" still blows my mind for how different and hard it was.

I’m a white, semi conservative woman who was rocking this album when I was a kid and yes, I still remember every single word. It’s absolutely beautiful to watch someone listen to this after all this time. I’m half here to watch the reactions, and half to listen to the great music that I haven’t heard in a long time. I’m a die hard rock fan and recently saw Tool play in February. But I’m a fan of many different styles of music and that’s what makes music so special.

I was 13 in 1986 when this came out. I was a 'stoner' rocker kid and Metallica and Slayer were my thing. I'll never forget I was walking around the front of my school at lunch and someone had one of those old school boom-boxes blasting Paul Revere from this album and it stopped me dead in my tracks. I've been a huge Beastie fan ever since that moment.

It's basically the two surviving members of the group Michael Diamond and Adam Horovitz on stage telling stories and talking about the band, how they started, the troubles they had and how they came up with the musical styles they had. It's a MUST watch for anyone that can appreciate the Beastie Boys.

I think the Beastie Boys bring this same energy on the tracks "So Whatcha Want" and "Pass the Mic" from their 3rd LP, Check Your Head which came out six years after this debut album. They still bring it with the bass, the beats, and the playful personalities, but you can feel and hear so much more maturity and growth in both the rhymes and the music. I think you'd really dig those tracks a lot...especially since you enjoy their cool, unexpected and drastic musical transitions within certain songs. Really enjoying your reactions! I'm gonna get going... I'm on the autism spectrum and this group is CLEARLY a special interest. I'll talk your ear off with all kinds of Beastie Boys facts/trivia if you let me. :D

We tackled installing our first system in this car. He Spent his whole damn savings on it, ported Fosgate box with the best 10s they made. Fosgate mids, tweets and amp too. After we got it done and dialed in and the first thing we grabbed to cruise to was my License to ill tape. That fuckin tape never left that deck for the whole summer!! Didn’t care who was bumping what at the time we killed them with Beasties.. Great summer! I’m 52 and still love every song on every album…especially this and Paul’s Boutique.

Some of these were xxx theaters- some played B movies, double features etc. It ended in the late 90s when Giuliani had all the theaters torn down to create a more tourist/ family friendly midtown. It's wild because this feels so old school now, but in 86, this was considered very new school. Def Jam Records especially at that time was moving boldly forward from the Old School style established by Grandmaster Flash, Kurtis Blow, and all the hip-hop originators. Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Rakim, LL...these became the ambassadors of a new school of hip-hop in the mid-80s. Rick Rubin used a lot of hard rock samples at Def Jam, and this album, along with a few of the Run-DMC records, are among the best examples of that style. The Beastie Boys left Def Jam after Licensed to Ill and laid low for three years before delivering Paul's Boutique, a sonic landscape that was light-years beyond conventional 80s hip-hop production. An album that couldn't be made today because of how expensive sampling has become (it samples over 100 different songs). The Beastie Boys were never content with conventional production. They always wanted to be on the cutting edge, with the newest sounds. And they always were.

This song is absolutely legendary on multiple levels! Not only did the "drop" reference become iconic and was later sampled into other songs, such as the Pharcyde song, as someone here already pointed out, BUT, just as famously, there was another line "Let Me Clear My Throat!" which was later used as the hook/main line in DJ Kool's song also titled "Let Me Clear My Throat", which is another hip-hop/dance club banger!

@@StaxReacts you're welcome! more of a dance/hip-hop tune than just straight hip-hop, but still hits. The inflection DJ Kool delivers the line with is different than Beastie Boys did too, but he definitely got it from them.

Jimmy Page is the leader of Led Zeppelin. There was a groupie that was 14 that turned his head for about a year. She was already experienced in chasing other bands the year before. Elvis married Priscilla at age 15 after dating for 18 months. Jerry Lee Lewis married his 2nd cousin on her 14th birthday. My grandmother was married at age 14 (leaving school in 8th grade was common among farm families 100 years ago.) and had 12 children. It sounds weird now, but just 50 years ago it was not uncommon. Several states had laws where with the parents consent, marriage at age 13 was common for some southern states.

When black dudes were rocking the mercedes logo this dude brow out a big ass VW logo off a Hippie Van. Black dudes were like 40s and OE, Beasties... Budweiser and Smoking "woolies" laced joints with random other drugs.

"& then we all switch places when I ring the bell" A reference to the Three Stooges televison show, on a episode where the Stooges would all switch places like musical chairs when a bell was rung. I think most of the GenX population that was deep into rap & Hip Hop, most of us probably can recite this whole album line for line to this day. This was Hip Hops first number one album on Billboard. After Ad Rock says drop, I often used that beat as an example of how the beats in rap haven't changed as much as we think, that sparce 808 trap sound has it's roots in East Coast boom bap of the 80s. The hos they are yelling in the background is not a sample, its just the Beastie Boys going off. 🔥🙏

Thanks for giving this song the play that it deserves. Glad that you enjoyed it. When the beat dropped... we called what you were doing "the stank face", because we all did it the first time we heard it, fortunately for you, you don't have to wear out your tape rewinding it over and over like we did. People actually slept on this song back in the day though. Paul Revere was such a huge hit that it really overshadowed the album. This was always my favorite, was so innovative on so many levels. Then add in all the other great songs on this album - No Sleep Till Brooklyn, Brass Monkey, etc., etc., and a lot of people just missed it. The beat dropping, breaking it down, etc., all originated here, they just did it before it was a thing, and it took 5 years for everyone to catch up to it (and obviously once they did, it stuck around and is still often a major component of rap to this day).
