Tom Thumb was a children's book character who was as tiny as a thumb; Tom Cushman was the drummer for a punk band called Murphy's Law; Chuck Woolery hosted a dating show on TV called LOVE CONNECTION; WELCOME BACK KOTTER was a TV comedy from the 70's; Sadaharu Oh was a Japanese baseball player; Vincent Van Gogh was a famous artist who cut off his ear; the woman holding the multicolored sign was a reference to Bella Abzug, who was a NYC politician and feminist; James at 15 was a TV show from the 70's; Chachi in charge was a reference to both a character called Chachi from the TV show HAPPY DAYS and the same actor's follow-up show CHARLES IN CHARGE; Sassoons were trendy jeans; the dancing is from SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER and "hey ladies" is a play on comedian Jerry Lewis's catchphrase "hey nice ladeeeee"!

As the story goes, when the Beastie Boys moved to LA to start work on Paul's Boutique, they rented a house that the Grasshoffs, which the Beasties nicknamed The G-Spot. They broke into a closet in the house that stored Madilyn Grasshoff's clothes, which included a lot of 70s styles. The Beasties would wear the furs and that hats out around town, and the 70s decor of the house inspired a lot of the 70s vibe of Paul's Boutique, and definitely this video. I see a lot of clothes in this video that were likely taken from that closet.

Wrong Tom Cushman. Tom Cushman was one of many known as the "Fourth Beastie Boy" - he has a writing credit on "Fight for Your Right to Party," and “Gratitude.” He was also in the group Brooklyn (1987 or 88) with Adam Yauch and Daryl Jeniffer. Brooklyn being the origins of both FFYR and Gratitude. He was later arrested for selling Philip Seymour Hoffman the drugs that killed him, but I think that got cleared up. Cushman passed away in 2018.

Since I'm only 5 years younger than the average Bestie Boy I'll help with a little translation on the references I know. "I date women on T.V. with the help of Chuck Woolery" Woolery was a game show host, one of which was The Love Connection from 1983-94, so during the time this song was made. "And I've got more hits than Sadaharu Oh" - a Japanese baseball player - this is similar to Rod Carew line in Sure Shot. "Well, me in the corner with a good looking daughter, I dropped my drawers, said welcome back Kotter" - Welcome Back Kotter was a TV show about a high school teacher and inner city kids (NYC ) that starred John Travolta and propelled him to stardom. This works on two levels here because the video is a parody of Saturday Night Fever (probably more of a coincidence but still..) which of course starred Travolta. "I'm not James at fifteen or Chachi in charge, I'm Adam and I'm adamant about living large." Here they're again referring to two TV shows - although James at fifteen is actually called James at sixteen (not sure why they changed it) Chachi in charge refers to two tv shows starring Scott Baio - Joanie Loves Chachi and Charles in Charge. "Woke up in the morning with a one-ton ho" - It sounds like wonton, as in soup you get from a chinese restaurant but I'm not sure that's quite it - I feel like it's another pop culture asian reference but not sure what.. Anyone who wants to chime in with that?

Hey Stax, I thought I'd suggest another song by BB, if interested. "Joan Jett vs. Beastie Boys - Brooklyn Rocks" (by the channel: Metal Open Mind) --These two iconic music acts did not officially collaborate on any recorded songs together; however, they did this clever mashup together that combines Joan Jett & The Heartbreakers' song "I Love Rock N Roll" with the Beastie Boys's song "No Sleep Till Brooklyn". These mashups are fun and creative but they're not "officially" collaborations between the artists. While Joan Jett and the Beastie Boys didn't join forces in the studio, their individual contributions to rock and hip hop have left a lasting impression on music history. peace out

@@StaxReacts - I’m a Tool Army type guy. 95% of my views are Tool reactions. BUT - if I like your words and style, I subscribe (just did off your SRV reaction). You are one of the better reactors I have seen here - but the music you have been doing - elevates it further. Peace. ✌🏼
