First ride: 2021 Yamaha MT-09SP thrills on road and track | INFO MOTO

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Yamaha's all-new MT-09 has hit Australian showrooms with a whole bunch of improvements that make it a more advanced and thrilling motorcycle, both on and off the track. Has it lost its wild side? Hell to the no.
Yamaha MT-09SP 2021 pricing and specs:
Yamaha has now released its entire 2021 MT naked bike line-up, with the triple-powered MT-09 checking in from $15,249 rideaway, or $17,299 rideaway for the MT-09SP.
The high-spec SP follows the base MT-09 in adopting Yamaha’s new design language, larger engine and advanced rider-assistance suite, but also gains a number of performance parts and exterior niceties.
Exclusive to the MT-09SP is a dedicated blue/black paint scheme, a double-stitched seat, an anodised brushed aluminium swingarm, as well as peripheral upgrades like black handlebars and levers and unique brake reservoirs.
On the performance front, the Yamaha MT-09SP boasts a premium, fully adjustable KYB front fork, while an Ohlins shock absorber allows for compression and damping adjustment at the rear.
For 2021, the MT-09 range is shorter in wheelbase with a new Deltabox chassis, hosting lighter wheels and a more powerful triple-cylinder engine.
Specifically, the engine has grown from 847cc to 889cc, with outputs lifted by 3kW for a total output of 87.5kW and 93Nm.
Importantly, the updated engine is matched with a significantly stronger six-axis rider-assistance suite borrowed from the YZF-R1 sportsbike.
The enhanced rider aids see three-level traction control, slide control, front wheel lift control and brake control as standard.
Also new is a 3.5-inch TFT display with a bar-type tacho, while an up/down quickshifter is standard and braking is enhanced by a new radial front brake master cylinder.

I'm getting the SP at the end of May - Test rode one today, for a second time. The handling, the plushness of the suppension, the rider triangle. It's really good. And it went like stink, 236 km/t was the max on a windy day 🤣 it's all the power you would want on the road 💪

I had a ton of fun demoing the SP. So much, that I actually rode it on 3 different sessions. I felt the quick shifter was super fast and solid but a bit clunky. The power delivery was awesome and the brakes were solid. No power surge in the lower RPMs which was good. The clutch grab was a little far out for my liking and felt like it bogged a bit in first gear getting going, but all in all I loved it. Also, I'd have to set the suspension for my weight because it was super stiff

I put 11290 miles on a '19 MT-09 and the throttle was not "snatchy" in any mode. I think it's excellent torque right off the bottom makes rather delicate hand motion necessary, otherwise it may seem to many to be a snatchy throttle by its software. I now have a Speed Triple but I didn't let the MT go easily. Mine was not an SP and had it been this '21 I would probably still be riding it. It needed suspension & a frame tweak bringing the headstock down a bit from its original "hypermotard" design - that was it. The Speed Triple has a noticeably better seat, better suspension (mines an S with fully adjustable Showa front and rear) and is a generally more "relaxed" torque monster for my old bones.

  • @dankeglock
    @dankeglock3 жыл бұрын

I’m not sure how tall you are, but I’m a taller rider and one of my concerns looking the bike is the handlebars seem a bit narrow. The specs on the bike seem very impressive. In real-world road conditions, it seems to make more sense than a lot of liter bikes, such as the MT-10. The 0-60 mph times are on par with MT-10, if not slightly better, but it falls slightly behind 0-100. The gas mileage is also much better on the MT09 at approximately 49 mpg compare to 30 mpg for the MT10. The MT-09 SP adds a lot of rider safety and comfort features and seems like a good value. I have to see which bike fits me better, considering I’m on the taller side, but on paper it would seem like the MT-09 SP is a more sensible street machine. I like the looks of the bike, including the headlight, but I wish these naked bikes would come with an option windscreen to make them more practical on the highway and other high speed riding. Something along the lines of the old FZ1 makes a nice balance for a naked street bike.

Whoever calls this machine ugly. A beast should never be beautiful. Think about that. MT 10 sp for me unfortunately.

As a 2019 owner, I'm not interested in smoother (=less character, more boring bike)... If I'd want smooth I'd get an inline four. I ride in the winter here in the EU and I never had problem with the throttle or wet grip, it's a super easy to ride bike which can also turn into a savage beast if I want it to. The new dash looks super cramped and claustrophobic to me with that thick frame.

Better suspension, better handling, more hp more torque, cruise control, how the hell could this bike possibly be boring. The only thing that any reviewers have said is smoother is on/ off throttle. You can turn most of the electronics of if you choose to. I appreciate that you love your bike, hell I love my old ass gen1 fz1 ,but why bash on the new one?

@@danlford Same suspension as the previous SP, marginal HP and torque difference, handling was and still excellent on the 2nd gen. Oh, the cruise control is sooo exciting! :D Why bash the new one? Go to a dealer and look at the shoddily mounted O2 sensor, horn, macaroni of wires hanging at the front, exposed rectifier. It looks like an unfinished bike - with a fugly headlight hated with a passion by the majority of MT owners.

The USA still doesn’t have any available. So I bought a Trident instead. Kudos to Triumph for getting products to dealers. Yamaha failed.

The trident is like an mt07 🤔. Nowhere near a MT09 power.
