FIRST LOOK: Hyundai Ioniq 6 - Is This Tesla Rival Ugly or Awesome? | Top Gear

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We know what you’re thinking: has Hyundai’s design department just dropped the ball spectacularly for the first time in years? To put it kindly the new Ioniq 6 is, er, challenging, but you may need to do a bit of internet cross-referencing to fully assimilate what you’re looking at here, because this is a car that doesn’t shy away from its influences. And what influences they are. Hyundai’s HG Wells-style time machine stopped off in the mid-Seventies for the rapturously received Ioniq 5, but this time we whirl further back to the Twenties and Thirties, a spectacularly creative time for automotive and transport design. Back then, streamlining was all the rage, and the results were often fascinatingly barmy. Nothing has changed. So let Top Gear Magazine’s Jason Barlow give you a design deep dive with head of Hyundai styling, Simon Loasby.

I totally agree... it's so beautiful to hear his passion; and as much as I would've loved for it to look just like the concept, I understand that they had to work within a certain criteria (with constraints). I am totally considering this as my first EV.

You know, I’m not a huge fan of the way this car looks, but the different thinking and the rejection of automotive normalcy in this design really makes me appreciate Hyundai and Kia more and more with each new vehicle they come out with. They’re super realistic with what they can do with each and every one of their designs and not overcharge people while still giving them tons of features, but still take risks and are bold and unapologetically themselves. Genuinely the Korean manufacturers are taking over and I for one am a massive fan.

Thats what made me fall in love with the Ioniq 5 too, the rejection of normalcy but yet its still very much a car without being too wild. I'm now interested to see what the Kia version is gonna look like. Because you KNOW there will be one and it'll be as different as the Ionic 5 and the EV6 is.

Whilst they are starting to change but between 2010-2020 basically every bmw looked the same and every audi looked the same. Honda's of the last decade have looked similar, and as much as I love Mazda, Mazda keeps a very consistent design between cars. Whilst I don't thing there is anything wrong with having a consistent and design between models, keeping all models looking the same with quite bland designs for a whole decade is far, far too boring. I think Hyundai group is leading the way in regards to innovative design. Modern German cars look amazing but they aren't innovative or special. I think a lot of a lot of Japanese vehicles now are bland and becoming outdated.

As a long time Saab-fan (I owned 7 Saab cars from the 1987 Saab 900 to the 2011 Saab 9-3X) and a current Ioniq Electric user I really love this car because it reminds me of the early Saab 92 car streamlined shape. I prefer really efficient, low power consumption cars with good dynamics, and the first Ioniq almost fulfills that (a bit more turbo-feeling could make it perfect). As far as I see the Ioniq 6 will have more than enough power and torque, yet could be quite battery-saver because of the extremely good cW. I really love how Hyundai optimized the shape. It's smooth, elegant, stylish... and at last not an overweight, oversized, overpowered SUV!

Hyundai is really doing some striking designs with their EV's. I'm liking that they are choosing to be a bit more creative than just taking ICE designs and slapping an electric powertrain in them. Government regulations aside, with EV's more or less being a "sled" of motors and batteries, the entire upper part of the cars should be giving quite a bit of freedom.

Now make the Ionic 1. One person, affordable, desirable, commuter machine that can go on the motor way. Ionic 2. 2 person, affordable, sporty, city friendly. Ionic 3 Desirable small hatch back. Ionic 4 scaled down by a third, cheaper ionic 5. Etc..... We need small affordable, yet desirable, electric cars for the masses. I love the new Hyundai design language, they are years in front of the competition. Can´t wait for them to produce a desirable, reasonably priced electric car, that is a bit smaller for European cities. All of their current electric offerings are just too big. Smaller is lighter and thus more economical & efficient. Why are all electric car manufacturers only focusing on the top end of the market and obsessed with big suv´s and luxury saloons. Please make a smaller ionic 5, that can fit into a average European city parking space and can go down narrow streets. Cars are getting bigger yet city infrastructure is not.

Excellent presentation. Great to be able to hear the head of the design team share his philosophy on so many questions. And your bringing Raymond Loewy into the conversation was both brilliant and apropos. Loving the Ioniq 6. Having owned six Teslas so far, this is the first hint of real competition for the 3 and Y, in my view. Mercedes, Porsche and maybe Lucid have provided alternatives to the Tesla Model S, but not head-to-head competition. I think many people will cross shop this car with the smaller Teslas. The looks of the Ioniq 6 are striking. 30 years or so ago I had a 911, and the roof to rear lines of this car, as well as the haunches, really do a great job reprising that vibe. I also see some early '70s Z-car (Datsun, now Nissan) influence in some of the front angles. I have been a Hyundai and Kia supporter since 2011. In general, I have been very impressed by their design and engineering since that model year, and the Genesis since 2007. I predict huge success for this model.

The front isn't as interesting as the sides and back, maybe carrying some of those surfaces from the sides to the front would make it look as special. Overall its fantastic in the sense of an old porsche/saab, it's understandable as a car doing its own thing.

When I saw the still image on reddit a few hours ago, I didn't know if I liked it, I was siding on "Well thats weird... hmmm" But now that I see the video, saw different angles of it... I think I kinda love it. Pending seeing it in person, of course. The needle is heading over to "love it" but it can swing back. That drop-point behind the passenger window, thats not something you see, like ever. They could have easily kept that line the way it is, but cut that black part of the C-pillar "window" upwards like most cars, or strait across. But they didn't. Very bold choice.

I have a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. So far, my favorite interior of a sedan to date, sharp looking exterior, and love being in the driver's seat with the dash layout with all the physical buttons, infotainment placement, analog gauges, etc. If i could just convert it into an EV with no changes to the interior and exterior, it'd be the perfect vehicle for me. This looks horrific. Outside and especially inside. I love the 2 door concept and the Grandeur EV show car, but this is just an abomination. Capacitive buttons on the HVAC, digital gauge cluster, uncomfortably skinny looking center console, all inside a boiled egg cut in half on wheels.

I'll be curious to see how the digital rear view mirror system works. It feels like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. It makes sense to have a digital rear view mirror for big trucks where you might have your vision obscured by a trailer or objects in the bed of the car. But the thing that worries me is if the software breaks down at all, or the camera gets damaged, or water gets into the camera or any of the other miriad of things that could be wrong you are now looking at a costly repair. A lot of things make sense to be digital, but why re-create the mirror digitally, when you can just have a mirror? IDK. Im all for nice big luxurious tech packages, but it still feels un-needed and if it goes wrong, it goes REALLY wrong.
