FIRST DRIVE: Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, 641bhp Hyper-Hatch! | Top Gear

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is the Hyundai N division’s take on the ridiculously good-looking Ioniq 5. A hatchback-shaped, medium crossover-sized, four-wheel drive EV, likely to cost between £65k and £70k and based on the same bits as the Kia EV6… with 600bhp. In fact, hit the embarrassingly named N Grin Boost mode button on the steering wheel and you have 641bhp for 10 second bursts.
But for once, it’s not all about the power - Hyundai has thrown the kitchen sink at the electronics in the 5 N. You can customise engine sounds to mimic a combustion engine, a fighter jet, or even a lightsaber. The N e-Shift mode simulates an eight-speed paddleshift gearbox, creating a more natural and engaging driving feel. There’s an N Drift Optimiser mode that sends all the torque to the rear axle and retains only the lightest electronic touch to allow big angles but limit excursions into the gravel. There's even torque kick drift, a fake clutch kick function that cuts power when you hold both paddles on the throttle, then dumps it all on the rear tyres when you release them to fling you sideways at the precise moment you choose.
The question is, are these all just gimmicks, or do they make the 5 N more engaging to drive? To find out, Top Gear Magazine’s Jack Rix puts Hyundai’s hyper-hatch to the test.

I test drove this car a few days ago and it is a lot of fun indeed! The fake shifting and engine noise serve a good purpose in connecting you to the car more, and even my family, who test drove it with me, liked the engine noise the best of all the sounds. It sounds silly, but it helps to make the transition fun and engaging. The car is a bit high and heavy for a sports car (I usually drive an Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce), but the engineers have done a remarkable job with this car. And for that alone it is worth considering.

That's mainly because there is no joy no matter what kind of gimmicks they put into an EV. An EV is not a car. It's just a toaster on wheels to us car enthusiasts. Everything that makes a car enjoyable to us. It has NONE Of it. If everyone else wants an EV. Go for it. But hyundai messed up and missed the mark for what car enthusiasts want. Because this... will NEVER be it. EV's are extremely toxic to the environment anyway. When they wreck. Toxic fumes and lithium battery fluid everywhere. It takes between 5,000 to 7,000 Watts to power a small home. It takes 7,200 watts to recharge an EV. Hmm... it's almost like an extreme amount of power from the power grid will be needed, fueled by all the fossil fuels to power these supposed "Clean solutions." driving on the road. People are buying into bullshit. And happily doing it. Thinking they're accomplishing something.

  • @mittortz

    @mittortz

    5 ай бұрын

@@jeremyhenry3126 yeah, it took me a while to realize the extreme negativity was coming from people who are scared of it. Because if we have EVs that have the fun factor, then there's much less argument for keeping ICE around at all, right? That's the thinking? Look, I'm personally one of the most staunch "ICE supremacists" (lol) out there, but there's not much any of us can do about EVs coming. It's happening, and my hope is that there will be legal exceptions made for vintage cars, etc so we can keep enjoying them in a reasonable fashion. But the days of driving a manual V8 to work are almost over, like it or not, and it's cool that Hyundai is one of the only brands out there that are attempting to add back some engagement that EV appliances absolutely are devoid of. By spewing negativity at it, the only thing you're doing is showing manufacturers that you want a boring EV appliance that doesn't try to do anything interesting whatsoever. And without your interest, they will not make it. Average Joe doesn't give a damn about engine noise or shifting. Hating will get you absolutely nowhere.

I'm actually shocked at how positive the comments on here are for this. As an enthusiast I'm wondering who this is marketed to. @@travismiller8232 thank you for your reasonable perspective. Look, I totally get that. I absolutely love every mechanical ounce of my E46 M3, and I don't think any EV will ever be able to replicate the feeling that it gives me. But in this very comment thread, you can see 3 different viewpoints. In mine: there's nothing we can do about EVs taking over, EVs will never provide the same feeling, but maybe if we try to innovate, try new things, it can bring *something* more enjoyable and engaging than pushing a button to go fast. Hyundai is taking that first step, and I appreciate it. And I would certainly consider buying it. Your perspective seems similar but you don't think this attempt will work for you, and that's fine. It might not work for me either, but I do think it's getting there maybe. @jeremyhenry3126 has the one that I could not understand for the longest time, but I've figured it out: denial. The belief that by throwing as much hate as possible towards this, maybe it will stop happening. Fight it, and die on that hill. I guess that explains the entire republican party, so that's certainly a type of approach to take. Best of luck with that, I guess

Not going to lie, the E-shift is really cool. Most of my gripes with EVs isn't really the lack of sound, it's more the lack of engagement. Having your torque and power application vary with your chosen gear is a huge part of controlling a vehicle, and having something that emulates an ICE car's torque changes with simulated gears would be beneficial around a track for just knowing how to finesse the car how you want it. I drive a DSG Mk7 GTI and manually selecting the right gear before entering a corner or rolling into the power band in a higher gear on corner exit so that you can smooth into your power and torque band without actually really modulating the throttle pedal at all, is a huge part of really fine tuning your driving with a car. Without something like this e-shift in an EV, that simply doesn't exist. So to have this is really cool, and the more I think about it, the more it doesn't surprise me that it's faster for a lot of drivers.

Im not a fan of this design, the Ioniq 6 also looks like a molten porsche, a banana from the side, if they literally had ironed out that kink it wouldve looked immense, the new Kona does look better but the old one was quite bad, so its not a good design either. The I30 Fastback is their strongest design tho the non N version could have used a mirrored exhaust, one sided huge exhausts just look bad, which also applies to the tucson which has too many dorito inspired shapes in it. Genesis on the other hand makes quite nice looking cars, the G70 looks pretty lit. and Hyundais Sister company KIA makes some pretty nice looking cars, the Kia EV6 looks pretty nice with maybe the C pillar needing some work and the rear lights being a bit droopy. The best looking car from them still is the KIA Stinger which beats any Hyundai. Anyways, its nice to see the koreans get the attention they deserve. Ill definitely trade in my chinese MG4 for a hyundai or KIA any day of the week

it seems that all people here do not understand about what's important here in ioniq5 N. Battery manangement that capable to keep all that monsterous horsepower until battery go off on track is key point. And another key point is that Ioniq 5N is capable of generating 0.6g breaking system through powerful regen breaking. This is very crucials in EV. Becuae EV is heavy and rellying on disc break on breaking on track will make break melt away and force you to give up during section. This kind of powerful regen breakings were possible due to battery technology (NCM 9/0.5/0.5). So over all, Now, ioniq5N is more capable in track duration than ICE cars!!!

But realistically over 200 miles of travel range. Expensive to buy but for the equivalent 600bhp machine the fueling cost is crazy good value. I’d be hard set to choose this over an A45 AMG for the same money for instance (mainly on noise). But when you weigh in all the extras, the convenience factor and how cheap it is to run one… it’s genuinely a clear contender if you love a lot of toys to play with, and have charging facilities at home. Very well done Hyundai

Ok. The Ioniq 5 N is really cool. I'm not a fan of electric cars - like many petrolheads - but the Ioniq 5 is a car I would consider if I someday HAVE to go electric. The Ioniq 5 N's e-Shift is a gimmick that really wasn't necessary, but it's absolutely awesome! It makes the car fun when you want it to be and quiet and electric everywhere else. I also like the torque distribution slider. And the styling is gloriously modern Hyundai. I think that if electric car makers want to interest the petrolheads of the world, they will need these types of fun gimmicks. I mean, imagine you can drive something like this and make it sound like a straight-6, V8 or even a V12? I know Toyota is working on something similar with the LFA replacement, but this is a good idea. Get rid of the Dodge Daytona's whooshing noise and make it a fake HEMI - deep and guttural.

It’s not a car I’ll ever own, I couldn’t live with the EV infrastructure, costs too much, maintenance prices will be insane for those huge tyres and brakes. But as a current i30N owner myself, I’m pretty impressed with this and it’s the sort of direction that enthusiast EVs should be going in to make them more engaging. Btw it’s not a hot hatch though, the thing is massive. And I’ll die on that hill 😂

It reminds me of my pc sim racing setup in the best possible way. Taking electrical components and using them to mimic a real racecar. But in this case you're actually belting around a racetrack! Such an amazing idea and execution. I think they should take it further, imagine being able to select different engines, gearboxes, torque distributions, power levels. Bump up the sound and really lean into the car being an NA V8/V10 or I4 Turbo. Just plain fun.

I think e-shift is a fantastic idea and one very well executed. The bouncing of the car when it was bouncing off the 'limiter' is so we'll simulated. I think this comes to one word, which Jack mentioned, connection. The sense that your having a physical input on how the car behaves, even it is simulated, just provides another level of connection. Steering and the pressing of peddles is just to easy for most, real drivers want to be busy, this provides something to do. Great idea.

I enjoyed your review. I have an Ioniq5 four wheel drive car and it is very quick but I can't imagine how fast the N version must feel. I do have to say that the idea of manufacturing sound is just stupid. I really love the electric hum the car produces normally and that's all I need. It's the soul of the car. If you need noise stick with an ICE car. Don't need or want a gear shift. Love the linear feel when the car accelerates. All I want to do is go fast and I don't want to work for it.
