Can The Tesla Cybertruck Really Off-Road?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Can it jump? Rock crawl? Survive the whoops? Conquer the sand dunes? In short, can the Tesla Cybertruck REALLY off-road?
Viral videos of it struggling on mild inclines tell us ‘no’.
But armed with a Cybertruck featuring Tesla’s latest off-road software update that finally allows you to lock the diffs, we took it - together with a Rivian R1T as a benchmark - to the middle of the Californian desert to find out.
Over to Top Gear Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Jack Rix, and Head of Car Testing, Ollie Marriage, to give us all an answer…

    Finally someone addresses tire pressure. All those videos criticizing the off-road capabilities of any EV truck need to acknowledge the tires have higher psi ratings for efficiency on the road. Off-road generally goes better if you release pressure from the tires so they are able to compliantly spread load over irregular terrain.

    But they fail at actually addressing pressures. They are still running at 37+ psi, which is more than most ICE vehicles. For true offroading, or even driving on the beach/sand, you are going to want to be around 20 psi or less. With my jeep with traditional wheels (non beedlocks) I would air down to 16 or so for most offroading. 37 psi is still street pressures.

  • @swecreations

    @swecreations

    11 күн бұрын

    @@hi9580This car will do much better than diesels when it comes to overheating, issue is diesels rely on air getting to the radiator, as the engines still produce quite a bit of heat while you're standing still, and so when going uphill or struggling through terrain you get little air to the radiator and it can struggle. Electric motors in comparison only use exactly the energy required to move you, meaning at low speeds and while rock crawling they're incredibly efficient while a diesel might use 95%+ of the energy just idling its engine. The cooling system of these is mostly internal and isn't dependent on air flowing from outside to a radiator, this means it cools almost just as well at low speeds as it does while going 100 mph, and is why track driving where you're using 600 or 900 horsepower for extended periods of time is so demanding on these. In comparison going rock crawling where you might only be using 20 horsepower (but loads of torque) to push it at 4 mph up a hill is going to have it almost completely unaffected, and with incredibly long ranges. I'd expect the part with them drifting around the sand dunes to be the most taxing in terms of overheating, as there they're actually putting large amounts of energy into the drivetrain. For that part they seemed to think it was the most fun with a 80% power split to the rear though. That'd mean an effective max power split of of 75 horsepower front and 300 horsepower rear instead of 300 front and 300 rear, and as they'd be using the front motor much less the max power demanded from the drivetrain would only be 375 horsepower at most, which it should be able to handle well. Also want to add that I'm not in any way a Tesla fanboy, don't like Musk, own a non-Tesla electric car and not planning on buying a Tesla, nor do I own Tesla stock, as it seems anyone who's even slightly positive of their cars always seem to be called a fanboy.

    Who gave you these vehicles to abuse like that? I didn’t see factory plates, which are the only folks who would make sense. I did take my Rivian R1S through Broken Arrow train in Sedona AZ and did some gnarly trails in Nevada, but I did them slow. The Rivian R1S is more off-road capable than the R1T, but it was fun to see you take the truck through its paces. My condolences to the owners.

    This might be a silly question but, when you go off roading with an off road vehicle, is it common to have broken pieces or insane scratches/dents at the end? Or do these vehicles really come out of that flawless? (Also referring to jeeps and other off road vehicles)

  • @RhysLloyd

    Not normally, no. Driving over rocks like that you should always go as slow as possible so you can minimise potential damage (e.g. sliding off a rock, or clipping and dragging a rock). These guys were going way too fast IMHO. Also too much pressure in those tyres.

  • @stevenarseneault1972
    @stevenarseneault197212 күн бұрын

    I can see an issue with the Cybertruck. If you are crawling and need to go around obstacles and turn your wheel full left or right and the back wheel is already against a big rock the rear wheel streering could cause damage and possibly trar the tire side wall.

    You're not worrying about range doing this in either of these either. In fact the rock crawling especially the range on these is going to be multiple times that of a diesel truck, as the electric motors will only be using exactly the energy required to take it up that hill while on a diesel engine 95%+ will just be used idling.

  • @chief1721

    you know, when an EV runs out off range in the middle of nowhere like that you simply unfold a solar panel and plug it in. If that subaru runs out, you better have an oilpump and a refinery in the trunk. I'm not shitting on combustion engines here. they will probably have their place for the foreseeable future. but EV has certain options to work around the somewhat limited range. By the way I never drive more than 400km without a break that would be long enough to recharge such a battery. I just can't afford such an EV for now.

    Curious for the of off road drag race? :Why would they state that the Rivian was quicker? Knowing the Cybertruck driver would not go over 40mph but told the R1T Driver to go for it ...( 50mph)?? Maybe a better way is to cap the speed for both trucks and see which one ajusts to the terrain better / faster? i.e. R1T rear end bouncing .... Other than that, great review!
