The fictional plane was based somewhat on the MiG-31 Foxhound but takes more after the Tupolev Tu-144 (nicknamed the Konkordski) The real MiG-31 can hit Mach 3 and can engage 10 aircraft up to 120 miles out. It's actually a 2-seater with the 2nd occupant being the weapon systems operator freeing up the pilot from radar and missile systems.

One of my all time favourites. Watched this every Friday back in the day (mid eighties), mind you back then you had to rent it out from the local video shop (Radio Rentals in the UK amongst others) & that was 45p a pop. But it's very spooky how the latest Russian SU-57 looks similar to the Firefox and..forgive me for saying it on here..how the aircraft in the C64 game "Raid over Moscow" looks like the SU-57! Anyhow, thank you for sharing this enjoyable watch with us, always wondered how the real scale model was built, cheers. p.s I also had a game for the C64 called Flyerfox! And as soon as it was loaded up I thought to myself..Major, you will be flying the fastest, most sophisticated warplane on the face of this earth (thanks to Apogee ;P). It's also worth mentioning on here the "Firefox" video arcade game with the laser disc movie effects, man that was the dogs bollocks, it soaked up all my paper round money, 50p each time you fancied yourself being Major Gant...stupidity, STUPIDITYYYY! (haha). Best wishes guys, 10/10.

I am curious about any influences that went into the design aesthetic. I believe the aircraft in the story was inspired by a real Soviet aircraft at the time called the Mig-25 Foxbat. The fictional Firefox bears some resemblance to the Mig-25 at the rear with its large engines and twin vertical stabilizers and the general body shape resembles the XB-70 Valkyrie except for the nose. As a side note the real Mig-31 has the NATO codename of Foxhound.
