the theoretical concepts coming out of the USSR during the 1960-70s were incredible. unfortunately, because of the way things were done, most of them didn't work. a lot of the things the USA built were based on Soviet designs. the Soviet leadership seemed to be obsessed with size, and never seemed to care whether or not it could do the job it was made for!

Ben Rich explains in his book “Skunk Works” how the Skunkworks engineer who invented stealth tech found an article in an aerospace engineering journal by a Russian engineer on how fighter nose cones could be shaped to better enable the radar housed inside to pass through them more accurately with less distortion. He realized that info could also be used to deflect or degrade radar bouncing off a specially shaped aircraft, and went on to design and build the F-117 with it.

And to think all this hysteria paved the way for the greatest fighter ever - the F-15 Eagle!
@Tacticaldave1
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, very good. But you have to understand that, at that time, there was concern that the Soviets were building aircraft that were vastly technologically superior to American aircraft. Principally, the MiG-25. That hysteria was the inspiration for the story of this movie. But it turned out to be just the opposite.
@Tacticaldave1
2 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed I get that. What I am saying is this story was inspired from 1960s-era paranoia about Soviet aircraft technology that never materialized.
Maybe after the success of Top Gun Maverick we'll see a resurgence of interest in a Firefox sequel or remake.
It's still a solid and enjoyable film, even if we now know that the premise that the Soviets could field advanced avionics like this in the early 1980's is patently ludicrous. (Awesome looking place, though.)

so happy, seeing this, to have missed this cinema offering and instead spent my money on- anything else whatsoever
I remember watched this movie when I was 14 years old. Probably this was the first movie for me dealing with an international conspiracy and contained suspenseful espionage that took the stage during the cold war period. The design of Mig 31 Firefox so incredibly came to real and solid that grasped my heart. The design itself might cause resistance and distracts aerodynamically when it accelerates to the top speed of Mach 6 however, the sense of wonder really won over the reality. Moreover, the how it took shape of this bird didn't look like any conventional Soviet-made fighter jets, nor the American made as well. I could say it looks more like European-made jets such as the external features are mainly consisted of large delta wings with canards in forward. I also noticed there was no HUD in the cockpit though, all flight data and symbolization could be shown directly on the canopy. The helmet might be equipped with the Helmet Mounted Display System which incorporates a thought-controlled device and other high-tech gadgets. These features are not depicted in the movie though, we aviation enthusiasts and fighter jets fanatics spread our minds to speculate how things may work to be functional and more effective whether the filmmakers thought about it or not. When it comes to the design of the plane, the Mig 31 Firefox has various ways of appearance such as being heroic and demonic (2:11) especially the counterpart of the Mig 31 emerged on the screen, on chase Mitchell Gunt to hunt down. I should say the filmmakers did a great work to let portray a single fictional fighter jet to have two different characteristics. I was still drawn to the last scene of the film, the Firefox flew into the Sunset. It is a great movie.
...Oh yes!!! I was 11 or 12 first time i watched it during the 80s on public tv...cold war influenced everything those days..
Wheres the whole movie remake!! Lol this is great shit!!
Wow so fantastic system

No the kid I always loved this movie. Love watching it with my grandfather as well.
When this movie came out, I was in the USAF and assigned to the F-117 stealth fighter project. Apparently the Firefox looked enough like the F-117 Nighthawk that our intelligence people were working overtime to make sure nothing got out about our aircraft. Personally, I didn't think they looked much alike at all.

They do and they don't. The overall aircraft looks nothing like an F-117, but if you look at the sharp angles and ultra-smooth surface, it's similar. Completely unique at the time, as well as being two of the exact features that give the plane its stealth properties. I believe you when you say there was a little concern
That's a remake I'd watch!
Why would you take away the different turbine starting sounds? I always loved the engine build up coming to life. Reminded me of Star Wars Millennium Falcon. Would love to hear an enhanced version of the original sounds with perhaps some additional beeps and clicks of the computers etc. Perhaps even a different futuristic engine sound mixed with the jet engine sound
