    Actually China recently kind of developed interesting thing for ships (but may be done on other platforms as well). So the main benefit of this system is that it has 8 launch pods and 3 types of rockets, one against huge missiles (ballistic or cruise ones), second for height altitude or long range jets, third type is placed as 4 in one pod (meaning that it fit in 1 pod but those are 4 rockets) and those required to shutdown fast but close targets like ones which gone though first two types of rockets. So all together it allows to target any type of threads from singe lunch station which is sound pretty cool. Anyway those are marketing information, how good those rockets and target lock systems we don't know and I hope that we will never know. Make love, not war, peace brothers!

    I'll believe the S-500's prowess when I see it in action. Until that time, it's just more vaporware, like the T14 Armata and the SU-57. Heck, its predecessors the S300 and S400 have been pretty underwhelming, as has the Pantsir. It can't even target low and slow flying drones in Ukraine, something it was specifically designed for. Russian military equipment since the cold war appears to be more propaganda than anything else. It fails once it hits the field,

    Same goes for NATO's Javelins, Stingers, M177, HIMARIS and any other weaponry, that sent to Ukraine. As they not stopping "Russian military equipment, that appears to be more propaganda than anything else". Modern warfare is a battle of cost effectivness. You can spend $10mil rocket to take down a $5mil drone, but it is not a great outcome. And all videos i watched, where S300 or S400 were shown "underwhelming" are in scenarios against overwhelmingly bigger threat both in numbers and cost. Like 20 tomahawk missiles and 10 F-35 with bunch of expensive rockets. With total cost of literal $billions destroyed S-400 system with couple buks, pantsir and other AA systems with total cost less than a $billion. Nobody says S-300, S-400, S-500 is unkillable complex of unpenetrable defense. It's just these complex systems are the BEST in terms of quality and cost. I havent watched much about Patriot systems. But i know for a fact - its more expensive. Even if Patriot is better than S-400, but more expensive. 5 Patriots will perform worse, than 10 S-400. And why buy 5 Patriots if you can get 10 S-400 for the same price? (numbers are not exact, just to show an example). P.S. i actually googled it. First article CNBC tells that S-400 complex costs $500mil. While patriot battery costs $1bil. Funny that i actually got numbers somewhat correct xD

    That's correct - the 77N6 missiles shown in the video are designed to intercept other missiles (short range ballistic, gliders, possibly ICBM warheads during re-entry). The anti-aircraft missile is called 40N6M and is an improved version of the S-400's 40N6. The S-500 system (launcher, radar, etc.) in its anti-aircraft configuration will most likely look just like the S-400 with an improved radar and improved long-range missiles that are derived directly from their predecessors. Also, while A-235 is essentially a Russian's GBI, the anti-missile configuration of the S-500 is said to be able to work as a part of the A-235 system by adding a THAAD-like final defense layer.

    THAAD’s official ceiling is 150km, but we don’t know if it’s greater in actuality. Either way, THAAD-ER will be operational in a few years and should close any real or perceived gap. SM-3’s ceiling is supposedly 160 km, but again, that’s “official” and is being improved. Ruzzia still has no analogue for either GBMD for midcourse intercepts, or PAC-3 for point defense (which as we can see, is pretty impressive and vastly improved over older versions). Nor does Ruzzia have anything close to the SM-6, which can hit maneuvering fighter-sized targets at 450km, and is much more maneuverable than S-400’s longest ranged missile. These AEGIS systems also come with much more powerful radars than the Ruzzian systems because (1) the US radar tech is better, and (2) they can draw power from a whole ship (or ground installation) instead of just a truck mounted launcher. PAC-2 may not have great range, but it’s certainly not bad range. Long range anti-aircraft work over land is what the USAF is for.

    I haven't read the comment flow and maybe I'll repeat things others have already said. Your video lacks a lot of known info about the S-500 because it's usually in Russian. I know the language so I can add some useful insights. The S-500 WILL work in unison with the S-400 as an extra layer of defense. No, the radars for the new system are NOT an upgrade or a derivative of the S-400 radars such as the 'tombstone'. All radars are a completely new architecture with no common parts with the older systems. S-400 is after all an upgraded Soviet S-300. The S-500 search & track was tested extensively in Syria to debug the system and validate that the preset goals were met. Russian air defense thinking is based on a philosophy of a layered system divided between the air&space defense troops ( point defense) and the air defense of the ground forces in movement. S-500 will most likely come under the air&space air denese forces to protect important military and industrial targets.

    @@quinndenver4075 A rocket-ramjet can achieve significantly higher specific impulse (kinda like fuel efficiency for reaction engines) than a regular rocket engine, and it can burn for longer using a given mass of fuel. Lots of guided missiles have a rocket engine which only burns for a short period (8 seconds for the AIM-120C) so beyond fairly short ranges, most of the flight will be unpowered as the missile glides towards the target. Problem is that manoeuvres impose a large drag penalty which slows the missile down even more, and control surfaces get less effective as the speed drops so it doesn't take much manoeuvring to kill the performance and range of the missile. Since a rocket-ramjet can burn for much longer, the missile can still be in powered flight when it starts manoeuvring to intercept a target that's trying to evade. This allows it to maintain speed and performance even at long ranges.

    That is why the Russians rolled out the new Abakan missile system for work with ballistic targets at the Army-2021 exhibition. Abakan is the world's first specialized anti-aircraft missile system designed to combat high-speed high-altitude targets with ballistic trajectories. Before "Abakan", no one had created specialized anti-aircraft missile systems in the world. The composition of "Abakan" is as follows: unified multifunctional radar (UMR) for reconnaissance and target designation for the guidance of missiles 98L6AE "Yenisei-E"; up to four 51P6E2 launchers with 9M82MDE missiles; power supply means. Launcher (PU) "Abakan" - from the anti-aircraft missile system S-300V4. Its export version is called Antey-2500. This launcher in "Abakan" is only switched from a caterpillar to a wheeled one. As a rule, caterpillars are not encouraging to potential customers in the Middle East, and this is not least due to the nature of the terrain. The 9M82MDE missile is a modified version of the product also from the S-300V4 air defense missile system. It is sometimes referred to as a "heavy" rocket. If there are several Abakan air defense systems in the grouping, it can be assigned a command post (command post). The performance characteristics of the Abakan air defense system are as follows: firing range at ballistic targets (min / max, km) - 12/40; target height (min / max, km) - 2/30; target speed - up to 4000 m / s; the number of simultaneously tracked targets and missiles aimed at them is 4/8. The maximum height of the hitting ballistic targets of 30 km looks, at first glance, relatively small. However, when individual developers claim that they will make systems with a height of destruction of ballistic objects of 70-80 km, then statements of this kind raise certain doubts. The fact is that at altitudes of more than 50 km, due to the rarefaction of the air, the aerodynamic rudders of the rocket become ineffective. Beyond this border of altitude, there is already a completely different environment. And it is necessary to make for a rocket or shunting engines, and control the product using gas rudders. Technically, it is possible to solve a similar problem. Only the price of the rocket in this case will be completely different. It is noteworthy that the "Yenisei-E" UMR steadily accompanies air objects with a very small reflective surface - about 0.01 sq. m. In the mode of firing at ballistic targets "Yenisei" is intended for search, detection, capture and tracking, recognition by trajectory signs for issuing target designation at high-altitude and high-speed targets to 51P6E2 launchers with 9M82MDE missiles. Another undoubted advantage of "Abakan" (in view of its narrow specialization) is the minimum composition of combat units and vehicles, as well as personnel of the combat crew - 4 people.

    These system are vulnerable to saturation attacks. In 2017 the US launched 59 Tomawk cruise missiles to hit Syrian Shayrat Airfield in syn, at various targets in the same airfield. The same tactic with all missiles aiming at any S400 or S500 main radar and control units arriving at different angles would have taken them out because inferior missiles have vast numerical superiority. Ofcourse every anti-air system in a world now is vulnerable to such type of attack. But when you compare Russia with Syria and doing far going conclusions i can reply that Patriot is absolutely uneffective due to well known cases when they even did not prevented attack and damage. But we both know that in these cases there were real people operating them poorly and standalone system never decides. Russia primarily developed S-500 for it's own defense which is deeply echeloned and S-500 will be accomplished by S-400 / S-350 / Buk / Thor e.t.c with long range radars like Voronezh, satellites, aviation radars like A-50/A-100 to detect and classify targets. Fleed, aviation and ground systems are now all integrated (like USA does) into complex commandment system which adequately protects key infrastructure objects. Ofcourse all that systems are vulnerable and there is count of weapons and military stuff which can be used to win an exact battle, but then nuclear weapons start being used and all tactics crumble into sand, because very much different nuclear ammo type can be used in different combinations neutraling almost every superiority achieved by saturation. It's like F-22 for example. If it will be used against Russia in it's territory highly likely it will be uneffective and destroyed, because of lack of it's main advantage : stealthness . As we change the territory to USA all changes to opposite outcome: F-22 becomes perfect defender in USA's sky, because it's supported by ground and sea anti-air systems, defended by other aviation so has very strong support. Now Russia does not export S-500 and inventing S-550 system, and imho S-500 will not be exported for at least decade. Every standalone system has drawbacks, while power comes with synergy.

    In my view, the S-500 will fill the capability gap between the S-400 and the future A-235 system (PL-19 Nudol), this will then form a multi-layered air defense/ballistic missile defense system. According to the Commander of the Missile Defense Troops, Major General Sergei Babakov, the S-500 is designed to engage ICBM warheads when they are in the terminal phase. In my view in the hypothetical event of a ICBM or SLBM attack the first system that would be engage is the PL-19 Nudol which is stated to be also road mobile, if any warheads get pass Nudol, the S-500 will engage, then the S-400 or S-300V4. Potentially smaller systems like the S-350 might be used as well just like what South Korea is doing with the KM-SAM (Cheongung Block 2) which is designed to counter ballistic missiles, that is my thought.

    What most of these armchair Generals forget is that stealth is designed to BREAK THE KILL CHAIN, not make the aircraft invisible to radar (which is impossible). The kill chain is the sequence of events and steps necessary for a SAM system to detect, acquire, identify, track and reliably guide a missile to it's target. If ANY of the kill chain steps fail, the target escapes unharmed or undetected. The F22 and F35 are both designed to be very good at breaking the kill chain for current and future SAM systems, and the S-500's radar is no exception.

    And for countering that there is the SU-57 concept, with a complete different doctrine of operation than the F22/35s despite the usual comparisons by armchair Generals. The ideia is that the Su-57 is networked with the S-400/500 to protect an area from these western stealth fighter, making it not a stealth fighter but rather an anti-stealth figther. It's known that the long wave frequency radars can detect (not track) these figthers, but then this information is passed to the airbones Su-57s throught network and they can focus their radars energy on these specific areas instead of dispersing throught wide angles and this will allow to track these fighters within much greater range, enought to start engagement in the borders of the no escape zone of air-air missiles. It's a complex task, but these networking can allow the job to be done by integrated algoritms and AI, making the sukhoi pilot just a platform operator. That's where the real complexity of these S-400/500 systems are.

  • @themax9913

    @themax9913

    @@malokegames Well, actually, the Su-57 doctrine of usage is fundamentally the same as that of the F-22 (or at least as it was planned, while the F-35 or B-2 were intended to penetrate hostile airspace), both are meant to be operated in an IADS network and do interception jobs that normal air defense cant do efficiently. Your point with large wavelength and the extent of Russian IADS (of which S-400/S-500 are only components) is indeed true and that’s indeed a domain where the Su-57 could shine better than the F-22 since it is supported by a better furnished IADS network than that of the US (which lack the quantity in their homelands despite having a good quality).

  • @Sajuuk

    @Sajuuk

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@malokegames Again, it all depends on the ability of the S-500 and the SU-57 to detect, track and guide missiles onto targets without becoming targets themselves. The SU-57 does not possess enough stealth to act in the manner which you have described without being detected. Furthermore, as soon as it uses it's radar to try resolve long-wave information passed to it by other radars it would be easily detectable, even by 4thGen fighters. This goes for SAM systems using their radars too. This is why breaking the chain is so important, and why the F22 and F35 excels at it. The S-500 might be a very good system but keep in mind the Americans intend on confidently using F35s until the year 2060. That should give you an idea of how effective it is.

  • @malokegames

    @malokegames

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Sajuuk As I said, focusing the Su-57 radar waves to the spot indicated by the long wave radars will make it able to track and guide missiles, it does not have the intention to be "stealth" but to hunt these stealth figthers. And as you said, as soon as the F-22/35 uses it's radar to engage the Su-57 (which they would rather avoid) it would be imediately detectable by the Su-57 or 4thGen fighters in support. I think you still did not understand the russian networking concept involving S-400 and Su-57s. Oh, and don't forget that confidentiality is the repice for failiure, that's just propaganda bs and not what really guides military decisions.

    It's possible that I've missed all of the successes of the S-400, but the most intensive battleground to evaluate the S-400 has been Syria. True there are a number of nations flying missions into Syria: the US, Turkey, Israel, UK, and others and so Russia doesn't want Syria shooting down NATO aircraft even if they are attacking targets in Syria. But I have to believe that Syria would shoot down Israeli aircraft conducting missions within Syria. Interestingly, the S-400 hasn't (at least publicly) shot down anything despite many missile and air attacks within Syria. Syria has claimed shooting down US, UK, French, etc. inbound missiles, but Syria doesn't claim it was done with S-400's. There have been one or two Israeli aircraft shot down, but not within Syrian airspace and the pilots survived, but I have to assume that if it was an S-400 that Syria would have made that a big deal. They didn't. So, maybe Russia has put strong restraints on Syria on how and when they use the S-400. Or maybe the S-400 isn't what it was cranked up to be. We (the public) don't know. What we do know is that Israel has flown F-35's into Iran (presumably as a test of their air defenses) and were not detected. We know that Israel has used its F-35's to strike targets in Syria. Again, I have to believe that Russia would want to shoot down an F-35 to get all of its technology. So, like the video, I'm left with wondering if the S-500, which I assume is very capable and likely more effective, is more hype like S-400 than reality. The S-400, at least in a very political context, hasn't lived up to its hype. The S-400 is in operation in many countries, but except for Syria it has not been tested in combat. And in Syria if it is supposed to shoot down hostile aircraft, it hasn't demonstrated it. The only real hostile air strikes in Syria are from Israel, and the S-400 hasn't stopped them.
