The area around Seven Dials has always been connected with low life and bad luck. Indeed the church of ST Giles in the Fields is thus named in order to distinguish it from St Giles in Cripplegate because the area was once fields. This is why they decided to build a leper colony here. During the great plague some of the first burial pits for the victims were dug in the church yard of St Giles.
The pub next door used to be called the Resurrection Gate and was a stopping off point for condemned prisoners who were on their way from Newgate prison to Tyburn (along Oxford Street). The church would offer the condemned men a final drink as a good will gesture, but often the convicts' friends would be lurking nearby to stage a rescue attempt and whisk off their friend into the Rookeries, a warren of forbidding passages frequented by prostitutes and criminals.

I've heard that the saying, "Being on the wagon", meaning that a person has stopped drinking alcohol, originated from condemned prisoners being taken on a wagon to be executed and stopping for on last drink. " They can't have anymore, they're on the wagon."

The lyric in the Elton John song “Bitter Fingers”. “The old die hards on Denmark St. start laughing. At the keyboard player’s hollow haunted eyes.”

Hi Joolz! I've just watched 'The Seven Dials Mystery' by Agatha Christie, and loved your mention here about the Seven Dials area in London. No doubt she was inspired by this area and its lore. Please share more with us about the Seven Dials area and history, and also, in general, areas in London specifically connected to Agatha Christie. I'm a huge fan!

Interesting video. Is that the church with the unicorn on the tower? Do you know the story behind that?

I think you might be thinking of ST George's Bloomsbury nearby. I've a feeling the unicorn is part of the Lion and the Unicorn who are emblems of the UK. The lion being England and the unicorn being Scotland but I'll have to look into it. Looks like a good topic I could cover! Thanks!

Ah yes..I'm starting to make longer ones now. This was actually one I did a while back but you're not the only one to say that so I reckon they'll be longer from now.

The information you put across is fascinating especially for those of us who may never see London in person. So a more thorough explanation, a few more minutes of video, would help sate that curiosity. I'm originally born and bred in New York City and I know we have similar stories so those of London do pique interest.

Cool. Thanks. That's good to know. Ok, I have a feeling the next one will be quite long. I'd love to do some about New York...would need help though!

I'd love to. I know the city pretty well. But I'm living in a part of Michigan now where mass transit generally consists of a mess of people, usually related, in the back of pick-up truck handing cold beers to the driver who is trying to avoid hitting the Amish speeding along at 7mph (that's 11.5 kph) with their horses and buggies while he is doing around 60 on a dirt road with a cracked windshield and headlights no longer attached to the frame of the car.

@@JeffinBville Oh wow! You made me laugh so hard! So descriptive and so true! I live outside Philadelphia near the original Amish community and everything you said could easily be about PA. Great laugh, thanks!

Joolz is there any truth that the saying one for the road was related to the condemned man having his last drink at that pub ?
