London Bridge Walk Through History

London Bridge Walk Through History
London Bridge is where London all began after the Romans arrived and set up Londinium. In this walking tour Joolz takes you to The George Inn where William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens drank and The Tabard where Chaucer started his pilgrimage for the Canturbury tales.
Then walk over London Bridge which is rich with history and past the monument to the great fire of London. See where the old London bridge came ashore at St Magnus the Martyr and then bend your steps past Old Billingsgate fish market and up to St Olaves where Samuel Pepys is buried with the first victims of the plague.
Then over to London's oldest church All Hallows By The Tower where Richard the Lionheart's heart is buried and see a 2nd century Roman pavement! Finishing off with a pint at The Hung Drawn and Quartered!

    Shame on you lol you missed out Tooley Street one the most important streets in the history of this country. As you probably know it was once called the larder of England and for good reason. It was the cargo unloaded in the upper and lower pools of the Thames that was said to have fed England

    LIke most Americans, I thought Tower Bridge was London Bridge and when I first came to London, My English nephew, who grew up in London, he was showing me around town and was telling me Uncle Evan, are you sure you want to see London Bridge not Tower Bridge, because London Bridge is kinda just a plain bridge, but I insisted, no I want to see London Bridge, and he was like, okay - when we got there I was like, Oh....your'e right...wah wah

    Crikey! I better watch out! What I meant was that it was William Wallace who was the first to have his head displayed there so I think the grisly custom started with him. I suppose he was only seen as a traitor by the English of course. A hero in Scotland for sure...and now a Mel Gibson lookalike by everyone else :( You're probably right that I need a new hat though! Edwin's sounds rather excellent! I haven't been there but that sounded like a most tolerable evening you had with your friend!

    Joolz, it was Penn's son who started the colony in Pennsylvania. I suspect someone else has mentioned this, but there it is. The contemporary of Pepys had a strained relationship with the diarist, and Pepys often railed against Penn in his diary. Interesting reading, although Pepys usually spoke of the naughtier escapades in Spanish or French.

    I was actually in London Bridge less than an hour before the attack (spent the afternoon having a couple of pints). Great video, you missed the new cavern under London Bridge station. It's huge, it's amazing what can be done with a billion pounds! It's funny how the stigma of South London being a dodgy area still exists to today. Maybe you could do a video following the wall and how it has shaped modern London?

    As always, great video. Did you know that the fire monument was built as a scientific instrument, a zenith telescope. There is a small laboratory underneath and an apparatus that can look up the middle of the stairwell, and the top can be opened up to allow a line of sight to the sky. Each step is accurately set to a specific depth. I’m not sure what you said about the kings statue on top being the original intent is true as the gold fire statute was designed like that to open up. Also, a historian has recently published that he has located the location the great fire started, it’s not actually in pudding lane but in Monument Street. His arguments have been verified by some significant others in the history community.

    The sale of London Bridge turned out good for both Robert McCulloch and London. McCulloch knew he was buying London Bridge and not Tower Bridge. London Bridge helped turn a lake in the middle of the desert into one of Arizona's biggest tourist attractions(besides the Grand Canyon) and tourist resorts. In the US we grow up singing "London Bridge is falling down"

    Joolz, why dont you do the Tower of London?

  • @Joolzguides

    @Joolzguides

    6 жыл бұрын

    I do feature the tower of London briefly in my London Pass video but it can be difficult getting access to big places. They make life hard for film makers. Also I prefer less well known places as there is quite a lot out there about the Tower, but it would be nice I agree

  • @vilstef6988
    @vilstef69884 жыл бұрын

    In your ongoing pub crawl it would be really cool if you could get a drink with the Yeoman Warders in their private pub in the Tower. It would be invitation only of course, and they might not fancy having their pub filmed. Just a thought.
