Hampstead and its amazing history

John Constable Grave, Dracula and Peter Pan - The cemetery at St. John at Hampstead is the final resting place of many famous people. The Llewelyn Davies brother were the ones who inspired J.M.Barrie to write Peter Pan and their family tomb is there along with John Constable who painted The Haywain. In Bram Stoker's Dracula Lucy is entombed here also.
Then you can walk up Church Row to see how a street might have looked in the 17th century as it hasn't changed!
Louis Patisserie - In the 60s Louis Permayer opened his Hungarian patisserie in Hampstead and it still retains its original features today and a lovely selection of cakes!
There are several nice pubs, my favourite being The Holly Bush, an old coaching inn.
Goldfinger - at number 2 Willow Road is Erno Goldfinger's house. He was an architect who didn't get on with his neighbour Ian Fleming who based his most famous James Bond villain on him!
You can even go inside as it's a museum.
Julian McDonnell takes you on a beautiful and nostalgic walk around this beautiful village including Flask Walk, Well Walk,Whitestone Pond
and all the places mentioned above which make a wonderful day trip from London.

During the early days of WW2 I lived in Hampstead. On a Sunday morning my dad used to take me out for a walk while my mum got the dinner ready. Sometimes we would walk up to the whitestone pond, and very often the air raid siren would go off as we reached it. The siren itself was just across the road from the pond. We used to stand close to the siren and look out over London (the trees were much smaller then and we had a good view) and watch the bombers coming towards us. The nearest we got to the enemy planes was once when a Me110 swooped low over the vale of health.

Just found your channel! I was a foreign student at a College in Hampstead in the early 1970´s. As a residential student. we ate all meals in the dining room in the school. Food there was, well, not so good. Sometimes, even not eatable....So at 6:08, I saw that cake shop, I couldnot believe it. It is still there! My only consolation during on and off 3 years in school -.was their chocolate cake!!! Thank you for uploading!!!

Great stuff Joolz. You were standing outside the house owned by Peter Cook in Church Row. The East End Victorians called it 'Appy Ampstead' and then they walked down the hill to the Bull and Bush pub. You mention the water. Just past Whitestone Pond there is the Vale of Health where people in the 17th century went to escape the plague.

Holly Bush My favourite pub in London! I've come down from Scotland for a London break a couple of times in recent years. I brought a book from my local library - 32 London Walks. I must have now done c 25 of them. So I recognise a lot of locations Jools visits, e.g. Goldfinger's flats, Smithfields etc. Very enjoyable series. When I win the Euromillions I'll buy a place in Hampstead - out of the way a bit, but easy access to the centre.

I used to drink in Jack Straw's Castle in the 80s and 90s when it was a pub. It is now luxury flats. Opposite it and behind the war memorial, is Heath House, which from 1790 was the home of Sir Samuel Hoare, a wealthy Quaker banker, who was one of the prime campaigners for the abolition of slavery. William Wilberforce and Elizabeth Fry were often at Heath House.

Hampstead is my native home town, too, where I was born and raised... I really think about it a lot, there are so many great memories of my childhood here, and I miss it. Not just because I'm from Hampstead, but it's always been one of my most favourite ever areas of London and all. I used to attend services at St. John-at-Hampstead Parish Church with my mum (rest her good soul) - not l'm religious in any way (which l'm not whatsoever), but my mum did a lot of helping out in the community with friends she knew at the church, and she herself did have quite a religious background and upbringing. But she never ever forced it down my throat, or anyone else's... May you rest in peace Mum.😢

Thanks. Yes, I'll never understand the youtube algorythm or indeed how TV companies select people. My worry is that I'll run out of places to feature or simply get tired of making them before I reach the level when it becomes really profitable, but it's lovely to know people are enjoying my work. Thanks for your kind words.

Oh thanks. Well, I didn't need to research this one too much as I knew it pretty well. But yes, some of them are much harder than others. Harry Potter took me ages!

I live in South Hampstead, just around the corner from Hampstead Heath, it's a mile uphill to walk there though. (Humble brag alert)

Yes, it does still exist in some parts. Hampstead is all very well-to-do. I expect it would get removed rather quickly.
