They didn't choose the first architect because he bragged about "building a tunnel 'undetected'" - yet he just told mike about it without any push. Who knows if he would keep their lab a secret.

I also think the first guy acted like it would be easy but they liked the second guy because he was actually transparent about how difficult it would be and the potential risks, which is always who you want on a project.

I love both Mike and Gus recognized pretty quickly Ziegler was the real engineer with a well establish background in his profession. His knowledge of the subject wasn't trial by fire.

Also building tunnels under the border means he likely worked for a cartel before so a little to close to home for Gus
8:45 The guy was a yes-man, not taking into account any issues that may arise, and also bragged about another secret project he worked on. He's untrustworthy.

Never thought about that. I just assumed Mike thought he was too cocky. But yeah, bragging about a secret tunnel probably wasn't smart.

Not to mention the cartel used tunnels all the time and a certain rival does later in the series. That secret tunnel could have been Gus's enemies project
We're starting the lab construction arc, let's go!

The scene where Jimmy and Kim first meet Francesca is GOLD. "5th circle of hell," "You had me at old people." LMFAO.
We are so close to him meeting a excellent new character. I can’t wait.

I watched the show as it aired and at first I was annoyed that they delved so deep into "fan service" but it turned out to be one of the most pivotal arcs of the show and important character development for Mike.
They filmed that intro with actual film, instead of doing it digitally, because they filmed Breaking Bad on real film, but filmed Better Call Saul digitally. They did this to make the scene feel more like Breaking Bad Edit: Also, that montage of Jimmy going around selling cellphones is extremely similar to the montage of Jesse selling meth in episode 6 of season 1 in Breaking Bad. He even goes to the same spots. After the Breaking Bad montage, Jesse gives Walt his 'second cellphone', which is extremely similar to the ones Jimmy was selling.

I've been saying the same thing man. Breaking Bad was phenomenal, but clearly the team grew and got better at their craft. You can see the polish and confidence in BCS. Everyone, the writing team, producers, film crew, assistants, all got better. I'm glad you noticed that. Hats off to you james. And i never saw that parallel between saul and chuck before. Chuck tearing up his house looking for the source directly parallels saul in this moment in his office at the episodes beginning. Wow.

Agreed, on all counts Jason. And the Chuck parallel/call back. Yes. There's one other clear one that I can remember but I don't wanna mention it 'cuz I don't recall if it's upcoming, or past where James is at here...

Couldn't have said it better myself!
I love how Mike and Gus instantly recognized Ziegler as a real engineer once he got to work. It was no question he was way better than the previous individual.
4:50 It always cracks me up when I see someone snap a screen off of a flip phone or stomp on a smart phone in a movie. That does absolutely nothing to the phone. Microwave it, toss it in a liquid or encase it in concrete. There's so many ways to destroy a phone and that just isn't it.
@rawtrahul

I choose to see it as just a way for them to "tag" the phones they shouldn't use anymore and destroy properly at the first opportunity
I don’t know if you noticed, but in the beginning scene they changed from Better Call Sauls digital cameras back to the Breaking Bad 35mm film to capture the feeling of Breaking Bad. So cool
Francesca, even though a minor character, has a full change during Saul, even sweet Francesca, learns to Break Bad. That kids is screen writing at its best!
When it was all said and done, and ended up liking BCS more and that says a lot because I've seen BB at least 10 times through the series.
The german anrchitect they hired, his name is Werner. Now, the namesake for Walt's alias is the german physicist Werner Heisenberg, just a fun fact

It is a pretty common name for a German man of his age at that time. In Germany, it would be completely unremarkable.

@MLennholm

@@Stratilex I've watched almost all of it, but for me it didn't live up to the hype and is nowhere close to the best show ever made as a lot of people seem to think. I have about three episodes left but I haven't felt compelled to watch them, though I will eventually. I'm at a point where I despise every single character in the show and just want to see all of them die, and that includes his wife and kids.
I know many of us have said exactly the same thing in previous episodes when you talk about the film making techniques---how it feels like the cinematographers, show runners, and writers all refined their craft in Breaking Bad, and then used everything they learned when they created Better Call Saul. You have talked about the pacing before and how Better Call Saul seems to take its time without ever feeling like it's too slow. In my opinion it's because the experience and skill of everyone involved has elevated from where they were in the earlier series.
I love how in this episode, werner told mike about everything that could go wrong? And the other guy was completely confident that everything would go right, and they went with the oldschool, humble man over the hightech guy with no proof of experience , also, love youre reactions, only reaction youtuber i watch and feel like im watching something that builds from what they are reacting too
I love how the opening is shot in the Breaking Bad handheld wobbly camera style.
It only just occurred to me now that James has no idea who Francesca is. lol That explains the non-reaction when she was first appearing in an interview in an earlier episode! I thought he was just keeping it low-key.

I love the Breaking Bad time jump at the beginning right after everything went wrong and Saul has to go into hiding, then seeing Jimmy being in his element, basically in Saul Goodman mode. Plus the beginning of the lab being constructed is great to see. So much happens this season, it’s amazing. Great reaction James, hope you’re doing well. Have a great day and take care!
Francesca, was the secretary hired by Kim and Jimmy when they opened their own law offices and was let go, when they couldn't make it work, but other than being wacked, nothing in this universe is permanent 😂❤
"Oh my God, Jimmy... Just give it a whirl, man." Oh, he gave it a "whirl." LMFAO. If the writers on this show had actually gone down that road of writing sessions of Jimmy seeing a psychologist/therapist, I think we all know how unbelievably brilliant they woulda been. And my guess is everyone involved in the show knew this as well. There's one thing/reason that made them balk at writing those scenes and going down that road, and my guess most of us here know what it is. Great reaction again, James. And I knew you were gonna give a specific shout out to the shot of that guy waiting on the side of the road w/ the bag over his head. It's a shot for the ages...

How am I always the only person I know that notices one of the 3 kids that jumped Jimmy was the 1 that Kim kept out of prison?

Maybe because it's not? The person Kim got out of jailtime is played by actor Johnathan Nieves while the three thugs that assault Jimmy are played by actors Tommy Nelson, Carlin James and Cory Chapman.
it would've been cool to see one of Jessies friends make cameo, maybe buy a cell phone from Jimmy
I have always said that Breaking Bad is almost impossible to top. But the camera angles, lighting ,storytelling and character development, not to mention the way they incorporate the whole Breaking Bad story lines without compromising the integrity of the overall story of either show. Also it ties up some unknown events that happened in BB via time jumping. All of this kind of makes BCS a more satisfying watch than BB. PEACE!
The first architect was overconfident and already proved that he was unable to keep secrets. It was clear the German guy was a better option.

I'm sorry, but Kim was 100% in the wrong here. Her sales pitch to Kevin and Paige was that Mesa Verde would be her sole focus. Then, when they needed her she flat out refuse to come in. I don't care if you think you were doing that felt more important to you. When the client that pays you calls you in... YOU COME IN IMMEDIATELY.
