So this first episode is another example of the writers pumping the brakes on Jimmy’s transformation to Saul. Their original intention with the finale of season 1 was that he did not even go into the courthouse. They believed that him driving off at the end of Season 1 meant he would be in full Saul Goodman mode for Season 2. But, they decided that they *really* enjoyed writing Jimmy as a struggling protagonist with good intentions. And because they cut away before Jimmy physically turned around last season, that gave them enough wiggle room to insert that new scene of Jimmy going into the courthouse to and politely declining the job instead of just blowing it off (it’s amazing how much editing can tell a story). Jimmy’s story in this episode is essentially the writers course correcting and slowing things down for his arc. I find that kind of stuff fascinating

Kim is one of my favorite female characters ever. It’s rare that a woman is written well and performed by such a great actress. Also, really appreciate the way you watch films man. The one movie I’m dying to see you watch is Thief (1981) by Michael Mann, I know you would love it. It’s my personal favorite film from him, and his visual style is so unique and influential. Manhunter is also a great movie by him that you should check out. Keep killing it man!

Yeah I’ve always viewed that last part as showing that even though Jimmy listened to Kim and went back to his work as opposed to Slippin Jimmy, but then showing that even with his return, he still can’t help but break the rules. It’s just so deep coded into him that he simply can’t help it. It’s funny that you also said that too when that scene was playing haha

  • @SuzakuX

I think more than that, it shows that even when he flips the switch and breaks the rules, nothing happens and he faces no consequences. Jesse in Breaking Bad had a similar line in one of his meetings, "If you keep doing things and nothing happens, what's it all mean? What's the point?" The universe doesn't force anyone to take accountability for their actions, that's a choice Jesse had to make and it's a choice Jimmy has to make too.

That's sort of taking the Chuck view of things. Jimmy can't change. I think if Jimmy had a better support system, rather than a brother who resents him and a girlfriend who goes along with his scams, he could've been a fantastic and ethical attorney.

Jimmy wearing Marco's ring is definitely a nice touch but symbolises the hold that life has on him now. That it's come full circle and wrapped itself around him. Perhaps making it an ouroboros would have been too on the nose. The enjoyment Kim got out of it after her initial disapproval is frightening, but I totally get it. The feeling of freedom you get from doing something that breaks the usual routing is intoxicating at times.
