    Tad o' trivia: Paul Dano had already been cast as the first brother Paul, but the actor hired to play Eli had to back out. Dano started preparing for the role only two weeks before shooting started. I know a lot of the spotlight goes to Daniel Day-Lewis for his part in this (deservedly so), but I think it speaks to Paul Dano's skill that he was able to give the performance he did, with such little time to get into it.

    The ending has actually grown on me over time. First time around you expect more. But I now view the third act as a sort of winding down. He got what he wanted, there was no more graft or struggle. So time was skipped to a point in the future that had relevance. This shows him alone with his wealth. The only person that loved him becomes his competition and their ties are cut. I believe he takes out his hatred (that has been building little by little, in his own words) on Eli, the return of an old foe that humiliated him during the baptism. He built his wealth, loses his son forever, and kills his biggest foe. So for me, "I'm finished.." is a very satisfying ending. And as the title states, there was blood.

    One of my favorite things about this film is the use of HW’s deafness as a weakness in Daniel’s narcissistic approach to controlling people. Since Daniel’s strongest weapon is his words and manipulating those to get what he wants, it essentially makes HW impervious to his control. This renders his son useless and he sends him off for someone else to “deal with”-Daniel could have easily played the sympathy game with future clients, but this was just as much about controlling HW as it was other people. So when the “brother” comes along, Daniel puts him in that role, kinda, that HW had. Though Daniel is incapable of being around anyone he can’t control, competition doesn’t fall under that category. Eli is his competition so there’s a drive to beat him and a thought that he will eventually win, so he plays Eli’s game for the time being. So when HW confronts Daniel at the end, Daniel learns his son is now his competitor and begins spurting out hurtful insults because he now feels he can finally control HW. This is a new sensation for the adult HW, so he just storms out. Maybe it won’t get to him, but maybe it will. Parental induced trauma is a powerful monster. Now THATS good story telling.

  • @miloandot

    @miloandot

    3 жыл бұрын

    He used HW for sympathy the entire time. He sent him off because he attempted to "kill" him. I don't think that was HW's real attempt when he set the fire. That was more of a cry of some sort. Maybe for affection, understanding, or what have you. Daniel brought HW back because Eli humiliated him and made him confess his sin of abandoning his child. He couldn't let Eli have that over him. So, he brought him back. Not because he wanted to have him there, but Daniel seen that as a way of "winning" by doing so.

    Great comparison of Daniel to an oil rig waiting to explode. It perfectly captures his decline into violent, amoral behavior due to greed and competition. BTW in case you don't, Paul Dano's first appearance in the movie was as Paul, Eli's twin brother. Not as Eli himself.

    Daniel's greatest flaw is vulnerability. When you keep things superficial with him, he can be a very engaging person. When he feels challenged or empathetic, that's when he lashes out. His fake brother brought him no harm, but it gave him a feeling of weakness so he severed all ties with him. He feels betrayed by H.W., so he lashes out in a way to make him hurt the way he feels hurt...but with the flashback following the scene, you know that Daniel feels love for him yet feels he can't show it or he could be viewed as weak. It's an incredibly dense character that one post or video could cover all of his layers.

    Yeah, I admit, I also viewed it as showing that in many ways "American" religion has often treated faith as just another product, another commodity to be marketed, franchised, and sold to consumers. Eli doesn't dislike Daniel because Daniel's "godless," he dislikes Daniel because Daniel refused to help Eli promote and market his church. The baptism he later forces on Daniel is a PR move, a commercial for how good his church is (it can "save" even sinners like Daniel!).

By the end of the movie he abandons H.W., and is physically clean, arguably the cleanest you ever see him, but is metaphorically stained in years of blood and oil to satiate the greed and lust for power. Blood and murder are just another day in the life for him, as he rakes in his millions off the lives and property of others

    I think the church scene is the most important scene in the movie. There are two things that happen in that scene that relate to the end of the movie. First, the only time you see Daniel being completely genuine in the movie is when he said "I abandoned my boy." It shows that he actually did care about his son, which helps demonstrate how far he's fallen by the end when he tells his son that he's adopted. Secondly, and most importantly, at the end of the scene Daniel shakes Eli's hand and says something to him that we can't hear, and Eli's face goes cold. I think he's telling Eli that one day he is going to kill him, which he does.

    Hey James, just wanted to say thanks for your uploads, it's been fun watching you watch so many great films. You have a really good eye for composition and a very astute understanding of color. You remind me a lot of myself when I was younger studying filmmaking, just devouring classics. I'm a really big PT Anderson fan and I think any of his films are worth watching, but I'd suggest an often less popular pick, "Punch-Drunk Love", one of my all-time favorite films that I wrote a paper on about its use of color back when I was probably about your age.

  • @duanevp
    @duanevp3 жыл бұрын

    There's another layer of meaning in the title I think. "Blood" is also a reference to family, and kinship. Daniel uses his son but then sends him away when he's no longer useful and requires picking blood relation over business. He accepts his "brother" and opens up a bit to him (the only person in the movie he does open up to in any way) but kills him when he finds out the truth about him. He and Eli aren't blood relation but they are the same kind of person - spiteful, shallow, vindictive when people cross them in any way. Daniel gives in to Eli to an extent - but only to get what he really wants. He hates Eli for not submitting to HIM so he cheats him, beats him, and shoves him aside. At the end when Eli comes looking for crumbs and Daniel reacts violently he tries to appeal to him on the level of they are "brothers", old friends, etc. But Daniel is ridding himself of the last of his "blood" connections, having already killed his "brother", severed all familial ties with his son, and then kills Eli, the one who is just like him only not ruthless/violent enough to compete with him.

    :) PT Anderson is my home boy. This was his first movie I had seen, followed by Magnolia and then Boogie Nights, the rest I watched in order of release date. Thank you so much for noticing the tiny camera movements. It's a rare sight to see PTAs camera not zooming in/out or moving in any kind of direction. Do you upload in chronological order to your viewings? (Did you watch Paul Dano in Prisoners before this?) I would argue The Master has more beautiful shots, but in a different style. He captured a lot of his frames like everything was a vintage portrait or photo. PTA is truly the modern day master at teleporting audiences to the era his stories take place. He also love to show the rise and ultimate fall of the protagonist(s). IMO, PTA and Tarantino movies go well together. :) Once the money flow is normal again I'll be apart of that patreon to get my picks in!

But if it is, I passionately recommend you watch all of the 8 films he's directed. You mentioned how the camera seamlessly pushes in, he's a master at that, especially in the latter part his films, starting with There Will Be Blood. The film is an allegory of America’s transformation from a country obsessed with religion to one obsessed with industry. The final scene is really explicit in illustrating this shift in the power dynamic as Daniel bludgeons Eli to death after forcing him to admit he is a false prophet and explaining “I AM THE THIRD REVELATION”
