@Johnny Cab yes and Adaptation too! Kaufman is a genius writer but Adaptation in my opinion is his best screenplay. Not my favorite film he has written but the screenplay is just so meta it is mind blowing. If you look up the definition for the word “meta” in a dictionary it should just say “Meta - met-a (adjective) Watch the film Adaptation written by Charlie Kaufman, Directed by Spike Jones, and Starring Nicholas Cage, Meryl Streep, and Chris Cooper. And Nicholas Cage again.” Now I want to see James react to it so badly I’m biting the bullet and finally joining the Patreon.

Watch STIR CRAZY with gene wilder(he’s in blazing saddles) and Richard Pryor. If you think blazing saddles is funny you’ll wet yourself with stir crazy. I like seeing you watch silly stuff for a change, makes you less serious all the time. Keep it up and I guarantee you’ll hit half a million subs this time next year at least!

He was incredible in Joker (and just about every other movie he's ever been in), but this is probably Joaquin's greatest performance.

His performance here has what I thought was missing from his Joker performance (and possibly every Joker performance, Heath Ledger maybe being an exception) which is a sense of true discomfort and strangeness. Being around a crazy person is uncomfortable. This is the gold standard for unhinged performances, and he’s not even supposed to be anywhere near as full on deranged as the Joker. There’s a mad kinda wisdom to him by the end that I find so fascinating

Facts!!

"If you figure a way to live without serving a master, any master, then let the rest of us know, will you?" I feel like a lot of people focus on the scientology part of it too much, I've always seen the film as Freddie and Lancaster's different approach of living without a master. Their relationship is endlessly fascinating and complex.

​@@GarrusDeWittit's largely inspired by scientology but it uses the cult to comment on just the general nature of cults and the environments/personalities that lead to a cult, I think.

This is Phoenix's best performance in my opinion. This movie probably was the reason why producers of Joker saw him as the good actor to play the part. He's great in Inherent Vice too, very interesting character as well.

@@JamesVSCinema There’s actually very minimal color grading done for this film-which is true for all of PTA’s films. Most of the correction done in post was to match the digital copies to the film print. According to Walter Volpatto the colorist most changes in color were adjustments in white balance. So most color is decided through, lens, light, and stock

The blooper scene of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix cracking up while trying to smoke Kool cigarettes is a must see. Look it up on here. PSH was the man. Gone too soon.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is one of the GOATs of acting and this might be his best performance. Also Amy Adams is highly underrated in this film

There are two performances from PSH that rarely ever get mention. 1. His final two scenes in Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. 2. Owning Mahowny. He portrays moments of franticity better than anyone else before him. Closest to it is Meryl Streep (Sophie's Choice) and Michelle Williams (Manchester By The Sea).

Pta said that he was inspired by the monkey falling asleep scene at the beggining of Baraka, super cool given that Joaquin's characters has an animal energy to him

Scientology at its finest. the processing no blinking scene is manipulation 101. Such an amazing movie. Learnt so much about vulnerability and trauma watching this movie

Fun fact: Joaquin Phoenix wasn't meant to break that toilet in the jail scene, and because the building the scene was in was considered historical, the toilet was too, and he just off-handedly, unplanned, kicked the shit out of it and smashed it.

"What is happening? What is going on?" In a word, Scientology. Hoffman's character and wacky his cult are *remarkably* similar to L. Ron Hubbard's wacky cult.

I would LOVE for you to watch “Her.” It’s my favorite Phoenix performance just because it’s so normal and calming in a way.

a fun fact about this movie is that "the cause" renames themselves as phoenix in the movie but Joaquin Phoenix's family irl changed their surname from Bottom to Phoenix after fleeing the "Children of God" cult.

This came out the same year as Her, and I feel like the performances of Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams across both would be a wonderful case study in acting range. In one they are twisted, broken, suspicious and immoral; in another they are so good-hearted and warm. And they are both incredible films.

The 1st time i saw this film, i was blown away by not only the performances, but also how gorgeous this film looked.

The soundtrack in PTA's movies are always great. Jonny Greenwood knocks it out of the park in every single one since There Will Be Blood. Hans Zimmer said he is his favorite film composer a few years ago.

The Master is most certainly one of my favourite films of all time. I didn't love it at first, but watching it the second and third time easily cemented the film as my favourite of the past decade. It genuinely has some of the best acting I've ever seen. By far Joaquin Phoenix and PSH's best roles in their careers. If you haven't yet, check out the deleted scenes for the movie which PTA edited into a 20-minute short film titled 'Back Beyond'. There's also a playlist with some great trailers PTA personally made to promote the film. You can find them all on Annapurna's youtube channel, the company which produced the film. Just search 'Annapurna The Master' in the searchbar. A part of me wishes that some of those deleted scenes were kept in the film, but I'm sure PTA had his reasons. Maybe someday we'll get an extended cut.

Truly a masterpiece. Beyond the phenomenal performances, it is a rare movie that seems.crystal clear about what it is about without telling you in any exposition in the dialogue.

It’s gorgeous, but I gotta give best looking film to Portrait of a Lady on Fire

This and There Will Be Blood are both masterpieces. PTA is a giant for making these two films back to back. Incredible scores by Jonny Greenwood as well.

Commenting before watching. SO HYPED TO SEE THIS!! Can't wait to see your reaction. I definitely feel it gets better with more views and makes more sense. But it's absolutely a vision of a film. Looking forward to your insight.

Master attempts to help people cope with things by revisiting the past. By the end the film is telling us that although you can revisit the past, it is the past for a reason and that is what Freddy comes to learn by the end of the film with Doris. She is no different then a sand sculpture that’ll eventually be taken by the ocean, at least to Freddy.

This one really blooms on subsequent watches. This is one of great films about the nature of cults and belief ever made, because it asks us to empathize with both members and founders. When we first we see him, Quell is quite untethered to reality and unable to face his trauma. A state of wild questioning. Dodd appears to have the answers, or is at least on a similar journey of questioning as well. The jail scene is incredible. Whether PSH is using the 'battle a trillion years old' as a metaphor or whether he actually believes his own story is irrelevant. All there is in that moment is two lost people that long for some sort of connection. A very human thing. All their anger masks a vast uncertainty. And they both understand this, in this moment at least. However Dodd has built an empire built on stories. People are not content with the metaphor. They want to believe that the story is real. And this film, bless it's heart, understands that some need to believe it's real, at least for a little while. 'God's honest truth', as they say. The Cause offers easy solutions to life's mysteries, which particularly appeal to people that lack any sort of momentum, or faith in themselves. Only by rejecting the cult and recognizing the reality that Dodd has just as many questions as himself, can Phoenix's character accept his present, embrace the mystery and gain any semblance of peace. Harder than it looks though lol. As the zen saying goes, 'first there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is.' At least that's my vague interpretation.

seriously the best acting i’ve ever seen

The first time I watched this movie I was left silent and depressed at the end - naturally I watched it like five more times that week and now I'm convinced its one of the best movies ever made

Just watched this last year finally. Always heard good things and had no idea what to expect. Really interesting character study and some stellar performances!

The minute I saw this was posted, immediately got stoked. Personally, The Master is one of my favorites from PTA’s filmography, and it’s a film that holds so much substance, yet doesn’t overpower anything; you follow and learn rather than just having a story be told to you. Looking forward to the Inherent Vice reaction!

It’s incredibly good!

This is one of my favorite films and IMO a modern classic. It´s not an easy movie, it´s complex but not for the sake of being indescifrable without telling nothing. The amount of layers of meaning and themes is incredible. Plus an amazing photography, production design, acting, music... Master piece really.

One of the filmgoing experiences I'll never forget is seeing this in a Salt Lake City theater in 2012 just before said theater lost its last film projector. They'd obtained the reels...I'll never forget how blue the ocean was in the opening shot, or how red is Dobbs' robe when he first appears, in the performance of a lifetime from Hoffman. Watching it since on screens has never felt the same. It was first & foremost such a vivid & visual experience.

This isn’t a movie I really enjoy to watch, but the cinematography is incredible and the acting is great too. I feel like this was definitely one of the roles that influenced the decision to cast Joaquin in Joker

The men being cut to in the hospital speech are all real veterans

Fun Fact! The scene with them in the jail cells was mostly improvised. Joaquin smashed the toilet on impulse and Philip just continued with his lines and kept character, and they kept that take for the film.

I'm delighted to see someone react to this. It's hard for a lot of people to get a handle on it, but I believe The Master is one of the great films of the last decade. The cast are immaculate, and that 70mm film gives it such a lived in, textured look. I saw it projected on 70mm, and it remains one of the great filmgoing experiences of my life.

I am so astounded this film didn’t get more awards recognition. It’s stunning, and the performances are otherworldly good.

I really enjoyed the decision of PTA to not make it too blindingly obvious that the cult was modeled on Scientology. I believe it's not just to avoid lawsuits, but there's a deeper artistic reason behind it too. The film wants the cult to be a metaphor for the psychological dysfunctions and generational trauma that the WWII generation went through, and by making it nameless it has more of a universal allegorical meaning.

That’s an excellent point about the very first shot of a movie and why the director shows us it first.

I learned back in my themes and films class the first thirty seconds of a movie is the most important.

A great reaction, as always. I find your comments on the technical aspects of film-making really interesting. If I can make a suggestion, the movie Coherence (2013) demonstrates how an intriguing sci-fi psychological film can be made for $50,000 using a mostly unknown cast with a semi-improvised script.

We desperately need the movie commentary of 'Her' . One of the best and most underrated films of the last decade.

First scene: Phoenix’s character on beach with sand woman. Last scene: same thing. No transformation or metamorphosis. That’s a major point

The fact that that portion of the scene is actually called “from the windows to the wall” is just amazing

I heard, very recently, the first shot was simply inspired by (I think it's in the intro) the movie Baraka. A long meditative shot of this snow monkey in a hot spring, falling asleep on camera due to how relaxed it is. A very long camera take... and PT Anderson loved it so much, he made his own version with Joaquin. And for the main story as a whole, I've heard numerous translations of it, what it might be about, (a lot of people wondering if it was a homosexual relationship they were both chasing after, to even a post WWII version of The 40 Year Old Virgin ((considering how the movie ends, I understood the theory, albeit, it's a far to basic plot to build a movie like this off of.))) When in reality, Joaquin took note that most soldiers after war are simply looking for a new Captain to take orders from, a Master, if you will. The movie is a giant slap in the face of the "6-8 week program" to "fix" PTSD. So, Joaquin. Leaving the army. Covered in PTSD. Finds comfort in his alcoholic-machine-lubricating-concoctions. Has past trauma from before the war. Has a love that he let get away..... I'm man-splaining and I'm going to stop, I love this movie, I also love Inherent Vice, Josh Brolin and Joaquin have some amazing scenes together in that. It's a movie that requires a 2nd viewing and a few more after that. It's too big a picture to take in the first time and say "oh, i get it", you can leave with feelings yeah, but to Master the Master....multiple viewings are very much indeed needed.

There's actually a video on KZread of the window to the wall scene with the song you're thinking of and PTA watched it and thought it was hilarious

Holy Fucking Shit As per usual I'm saving his for when I'm at home and comfy and cozy. In my top 5/10 of all movies I've personally seen.

This is my favorite PTA film in general from his writing/directing to these awe struck performances (Phoenix & Hoffman should've won Oscars for this as these are their best roles).There's too many great scenes from the processing to the jail scene to their final goodbye. One of the best films of the 2010s.

He has been being hypnotized from the first moment he meets the master. Thats what cults do: isolate, break, give hope, rebuild until you can't recognize yourself. Also I recommend "Equilibrium" with Christian bale, I think that's a movie you'll like.

This movie does such a great job of holding a mirror up to things like Scientology because it shows how programs like this get you to confront harsh things about yourself but at the same time pretends "only through MY way can you find the answers" but in Dodd's case you can still see how its still just as much of a dead end as if they had never met at all...and over time Freddie can see it and he hates it, but he also doesn't really know how to completely take himself out of it because he still wants to find the answers as to why he can't fit in and why he's so angry

It did not matter how upsetting or slow this movie got, the acting made me unable to stop watching.

I feel this movie is a critique of not only cults, but religion and ideologies with leaders that refuse to budge. Such a great movie.

Joaquin Phoenix gives in my opinion the best performance of the last decade in this movie. (And I have seen A LOT!)

The scene where Joaquin breaks the toilet..it wasn't planned. The crew actually got fined because that toilet was real, but also I guess historic because of how old it was.

Speaking of great performances, for some reason your reaction made me think of the movie Doubt, which is basically a face to face between Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman. If you haven't seen it I recommend. And congratulations on your 50k.

I’d LOVE to see your commentary on Her. It’s my all-time favorite movie, and it’s got some of the best, most-organically-designed futurescapes I’ve seen in film. It’d also coincide perfectly with Arcade Fire & Owen Pallett’s score for the film finally coming out (after 8 years!) in a couple days.

A must rewatch for me. Easily PTA's most dense movie and I didn't totally connect the first time.

From the window to the wall . . . I was waiting for it after you said it that way and was not disappointed. A really great Philip Seymour Hoffman film to check out is A Most Wanted Man (2014).

Joaquin looked so different in this film that I genuinely sometimes forgot it was him 😂

Fun fact: during the prison scene, Joaquin Phoenix destroyed a toilet in a historic location. I guess someone on staff forgot to tell him not to destroy it. I believe they ran afoul with a historic preservation group and had to pay some fines for the gaff.

got to see this in 70mm. It was mesmerizing.. I think it was the first film to bring back shooting on actual 70mm film. I might be wrong,, IMO you can throw as many K's u want into a field of pixels, it will never have the same natural physical evidence that comes from a chemical reaction.
