It’s an excellent movie

I think anyone has to watch it a couple times. Like Tarantino said (paraphrasing) "To have a conversation about it (There will be Blood) you have to see it at least twice". The movie angered me the first time so I had to go back and then I started to enjoy it. The Daniel character wasn't a bad guy. When he was still poor her saved an infant from a life at an orphanage. He build a school and invested in the local agriculture. He prevented child abuse. He sent HW off to private school after an arson attempt so it's not a simple abandonment. He got everything he wanted through sheer determination and brought a general prosperity to those around him. He ended up being a drunk lonely man surrounded by his success to which I think is a very realistic scenario. All the stuff he said at the end to HW was par for the course being a raging alcoholic. The only people he buried were the ones trying to take advantage of him. [Sitting across from Mary's father] Daniel - "Your father doesn't hit you any more right? Mary - "No" Daniel - "That's right better not"
