I completely agree with your opinion on this being better than the original, and for the same reason. When you're just working with MIDI/chiptune, you have to make a lot of sacrifices. That doesn't diminish Uematsu's work at all. Without it, this rendition wouldn't exist. EDIT: Forgot to mention, I DID grow up with FF8 and have a lot of nostalgia for it.

Soken has trained up two protégés, Daiki Ishikawa and Takafumi Imamura, to help with FFXIV work. His time in the hospital was one reason. Another is because Soken is pulling double duty. Working on FFXIV and FFXVI simultaneously. Beginning with Shadowbringers, the two new composers have been contributing a lot. And yeah this guy, Ishikawa, has been killing it since he’s appeared.

  • @DracoSuave

That and Soken's job description isn't just Composer, it's sound director, and he has a LOT more duty on his plate than composing music---every sound in the game and when to use it and how is his role.

Soken has always had multiple composers and arrangers helping him with the music ever since 2.0, regardless of his condition and situation. Even before Shadowbringers, there already were Tsutomu Narita (mainly for Uematsu's works), Yoshitaka Suzuki, Sachiko Miyano, Kenichi Kuroda, Yukiko Takada, to name a few. They contributed a lot too (and even if not a lot, some of them did very major tracks like some final boss themes). Most of them are also still contributing to FFXIV to this day. Ishikawa and Imamura joined during Shadowbringers and are just the more "permanent" composers/arrangers. In fact, we're getting even more new arrangers like Ryo Furukawa (In the Balance) and someone else who we don't know the proper name yet.

Funny thing about bringing up what Nobuo would think about this arrangement. The ones that were, however were Blue Fields, Force Your Way, Don't Be Afraid, The Legendary Beast, & yes, The Extreme, & they all have a nice richness that new technology & instrumentation allowed. Aye, I believe this is the evolution of The Extreme, which is why the deviation was so small.

So while the boss is an FFXIV boss and isn't related to Ultimecia, the entire raid series in XIV sometimes borrow from other games. Heavensward is an original story, but uses their own version of the FF6 Alexander summon. The raids in Stormblood are the Omega raids, in which you face off against FFXIV's version of the Superboss Omega from FF5 (Stormblood in general ahs a lot of ff5 references). That raid consists of Omega pitting you against various bosses from the FF5 and FF6 series. The Eden Raids for Shadowbringers borrow heavily from FF8, and while not all the bosses are from FF8 (It uses Eden Prime as one boss), other FF8 tracks like Force Your Way, Don't Be Afraid and The Legendary Beast, all made it in XIV as remastered tracks. The boss you have to fight to get to this fight with Gaia here is called Eden's Promise, a boss whose design is heavily inspired by one of the depictions of the Greek Goddes Artimis. Ultimecia's japanese name is "Artumishia", and the spanish translation thus makes her name Artimisia, which is a name given to women named after Artimis. It's a nice callback to Ultimecia's potential inspirations, and her fight even has moves that make some references to FF8's Junctioning system in general. As for Gaia, the one you fight here, she has other several references to Ultimicia in this fight. Originally suffering from amnesia, her memories are restored and her goal in this fight is alluded to wanting to compress everything into one moment, free of pain and suffering, such that she won't be able to forget herself again and can know unending joy (she states this in the video gameplay). Also linking her to Ultimecia's goal to compress time and space and end existence, Gaia possesses the ability to do just that in her fight with you, able to warp time and space by delaying spells to activate later, recording your position on the field and then warping you to those spots later. She was an incredibly fun fight to fight in savage when I did her last year if not confusing the first few times i fought her lol. And yes the fight is 10 minutes long. Savage fights are some of the harder fights in XIV, being deliberately upscaled, optional, but harder iterations of the content. This track, and most of the XIV version of Dancing Mad, is locked behind the savage content. As a normal player you will never hear this track in game unless you do the savage content for the fight or visit someone that has the orchestration roll for it.

That expansion had a lot of 8 references baked in. One of the jobs, Dancer, uses a thrown version of Rinoa's weapon. The other new job, Gunbreaker, is just "Squall as a tank class." Quetzalcoatl is a dungeon boss. The fight in this battle is the last of the Eden raid series which are all based around a.. uh, hard to explain. The 14 version of the GF Eden which is a biological airship? That's the best I got. A lot of the fights and mechanics are callbacks to 8 stuff as well, as Kalamin explained.

As I'm sure many have told you by now, the raid story isn't a crossover per say, it's just very heavily inspired by FF8 in themes since the story revolves around 14's version of Eden (The GF from FF8). So the fights throughout the Raid use FF8 music and in some cases have little nods and references like Drawing/Junction and a character who uses a Gunblade. As an FF8 fan all of the music they remade for the raid are (in my opinion) improvements over their originals and I absolutely love them. They remade: "Don't be afraid" "Force your way" "Blue Fields" "The Legendary Beast" "Ami" (As well as The Extreme, obviously)

There's a reason The Extreme is my favorite FF boss theme... that calm before the storm, building up to the absolute banger sections then taking a brief breathe of air before diving right back into it. I lost my mind when I found out they had actually put The Extreme into the raid because it wasn't in the normal mode, I'd been hoping since the very start when they said the raid was going to be FF8 themed. I also don't think it's controversial since as you say, if Nobuo had the means to make his compositions with modern tech, he'd have wanted it to sound like this. I love both versions of The Extreme and would say they both have special properties that basically tie them for me! Another thing to mention is that XIV has a lot of guest/collaborator composers or performers so most people just credit the music to Soken since he's the one in charge of music direction and main composition. But there's definitely a lot of talented singers and composers pitching into the soundtrack besides just Soken.

This rendition is a huge part (at least to me) of why there is so much fervor surrounding remakes of classics. Nobuo is a certified genius, and will always be held with the highest regard, but he also had to make due with what was available at the time - my other FF hero Naoshi Mizuta had the same problems as while FF11 has amazing soundtracks they all suffer from being heavily synthesized. Honestly this just hypes me up for Rebirth and 16 even more, and I'm curious if Reunion got its music remastered as well (I'm ready to cry like a baby when the time comes ; ; ) I wholly agree that this version is superior, and looking forward to the future. All I can hear is Ultimecia's JP voice actor from Dissidia in my head now XD

This was definitely a perfect use of the track. Not only is it a different way to explore Gaia's loss than the normal encounter provided (this is a savage exclusive fight), but the cutscene is pretty perfectly tuned to the track for drama. It's also an excellent track to motivate you through hours of progress trying to get the fight down, even when you have to fight an equally difficult boss every instance to fight this one.

14 is like a theme park that takes random references from all the other games and throws them into it's own story, so we don't have a literal 8 crossover with ultimicia as the boss or anything but rather a unique storyline involving the 14 version of Eden (the summon from 8) which plays a massive role in Shadowbringers raid. There's various 8 music thrown into that raid and the quests related to it. It's great!

FF8 was my first FF game so I was all for this raid tier. The 1st phase of this fight has her using many of the FF8 commands. Draw, Junction, Stock, Cast. On all of the Primals you fought earlier in the raid tier. The second phase is as close to Ultimecia as you can get without her actually being in the game. She uses many time-altering abilities that you have to resolve in a certain order AND uses Shockwave Pulsar on a regular basis. This fight was the reason I wanted to get into savage raiding, and remains my favorite fight.

In FF14, every 'raid' has a side story, and they are themed after different SE games, mostly FF games. This raid was FF8 themed, with the main battle themes being used for all the bosses, and a couple of special tunes for a handful of bosses. The raid has 4 fights in each tier. Don't be Afraid, Oblivion, The Legendary Beast, and The Extreme are all remixed in this raid. Oblivion isn't an FF8 track, but is the Shiva theme you listened to before from FF14. The other 3 are FF8. Two more songs are used in the raid tier outside battle, Blue Fields (Overworld theme FF8) and Ami (Laguna Flashback theme when he meets Raine).

Having done this fight over and over, I can honestly say it does not get old. Every time we'd fail a mechanic and the team would be wiped out, it was worth it. And it may not have been Ultimecia, but it fit the time so well. The boss manipulates time several times throughout the fight, so you have to pre-emptively move and be in the correct spot for something later on, as you'll be warped back in time to that spot. And that piano riff at the start just sounds like a broken clock to me. As for your question: No One Winged Angel version (yet). No Ultimecia but there's a lot of FF8 content in this raid series. Kefka is in the game hence all 4 movements of Dancing Mad making it in (simulation). Exdeath is also in the same raid series (and Neo Exdeath). Anima is in there (FFX). And current patches have confirmed the Four Fiends from FF4, as well as Golbez.

Personally, I prefer this version as well. It's kinda unfortunate that only the best of the best players would have been able to experience this rendition when it first came out but thanks to videos like that and tradable in-game music the rest of us are able to experience it as well. As far as FFXIV taking themes from other FF games, others have mentioned FF6 and FF8 but the current expansion is very heavily FF4-themed and has both the FF4 battle theme and its boss theme currently in the game (and both are great).

  • @Varizen87

Short version of how this made it into FFXIV: The Eden raid series is a heavy reference and tribute to FFVIII while being its own original story within the context of Shadowbringers. Also, an additional connection is that Gaia, as the Oracle of Darkness, it amplifies her control over time, which is what she has in common with Ultimecia: The ability to compress time. (this version of the fight is an alternate version of the canon Eden story where you would have failed to save Gaia from Mitron's plan). Also... Gonna keep pushing for this... you REALLY need to check out the FF1 battle theme to really know where the baseline originated. If you listen to the FF1 battle theme, you will see so much of what's persisted through time. Here's the a list to answer some questions... There are many references to old FFs in 14 as it's like a Final Fantasy theme park in a lot of the side stories. Here's a loose list: Omega Raids: Omega, an advanced war machine from another world can simulate and replicate anything it needs for battle, and to test and understand you, it makes real various beings from history and fiction it has heard of to study your power. It samples from FF 1, 5, and 6, and you hear FF5 Boss battle, Battle with X-Death, Neo-ExDeath, FF6 Boss Battle, Dancing Mad (all 4 movements), and Final Fantasy 1 Battle Scene. The Warring Triad: This uses the Warring Triad as their own incarnation in FF14 from 6. All 3 gods share Decisive Battle as the first half of their battles. Eden: This raid as mentioned before has a lot of 8 references and uses Legendary Beast and The Extreme. Neir Cross-over Raid: An entire 24-person raid series dedicated to a crossover with Neir: Automata that is officially canon and uses a lot of Neir Automata and Replicant music. Gilgamesh: Battle on the Big Bridge is his theme, of course. FF2: The FF2 battle music pops up in certain silly FATEs and events. The Crystal Tower Raids: Any characters or places associated with this use various FF3 tracks like Eternal Wind and the boss battle and final boss themes as well as 3 total dungeon themes. FF4: The current FFXIV storyline has a lot of FF4 references, so 1 specific location uses the FF4 battle theme, and the most recent dungeons and trails use the FF4 boss theme and Elemental Fiend boss themes. Also a dark version of the theme of Troia is used as well as the track Sorrow. FF9: The PVP arenas for Crystaline Conflict use The Hunt and Run! FF12 & FFTactics: The Battlefield areas of Bozja and the Return to Ivalice use the boss and some dungeon and panic themes from FF12 and FF Tactics. Both of these story lines were written and directed by Yasumi Matsuno, the creator of the source games. While some plot items are sampled from 7, there's not really any music I can readily think of taken from it. 1, 2, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, and 15 don't have a lot of music aside from 15's crossover event yielding 6 to 8 tracks, but outside of the Ragalia mount, you don't hear these anywhere. 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 are the most heavily sampled. However, when it comes to enemy models, 11 is the single most heavily sampled game followed by 12 and 13.

If I had to pick a choice between every final raid boss, I definitely have to go with Omega's theme, From the Heavens and this being my second favorite. I love this rendition don't get me wrong, both do a great job of highlighting the tensions going on in the fight, but the the first is what I considered to be one of Sokens best work. Hope you get to react to that soon!

I think the only thing I prefer in the original that's not here is the stereo separation on the synth runs. They're the element of the Extreme that made it my favorite of the FF final boss tracks, and I miss them here. Hard agree on this being a better arrangement overall though; not having to stick to the PS1 sound chip lets every (other) element of the song really shine!

FF XIV is described by the Producer Yoshi-P as a FF it incorporates elements from different FF games ... but its not just a member berry or nostalgia bait ... its a proper homage to the original in that its visibly referencing the older game but its made into its own thing that fits into XIV ... part of this is that when noticeable elements like bosses or iconic locations are included the music is often a direct remix/rearrangements or clearly inspired by the original ... made recognizable to the fans but whiteout feeling out of place to people who are not familiar

Final Fantasy XIV is a theme park MMO. Lots of "OH I KNOW WHAT THAT IS" and "HEY YOU'RE THAT GUY FROM THIS ONE WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU". Lots of fights/raid sections are based off different games, and some are XIV exclusive. Just makes the game even more amazing. LOL Oh, and if I recall, I believe we were told that Sephiroth ('cause around/after Kefka we hoped Sephiroth would be next) was "too powerful for us to handle" or something to that effect. :P It'd be sick if it did appear in the game though.

FFXIV has tons of stuff from other FF-titles, where it almost becomes a mix of different FF-titles with some originality as glue. I find Nobuo's music is especially outstanding, where it also overshadows often the music of other FF-composers including Soken.

So this entire raid series was based around Eden (The summon from FF8). FFXIV is like an amalgamation of other FFs and theme park. It takes bosses, music, story points from the other games. It's this raid series you fight Eden itself. You fight FFXIVs version of Griever which is called Fatebreaker. And then the 12th and final fight of the raid series in the savage version the phase 2 is Oracle of Darkness which is Ultimecia in everything but look and name. Oracle of Darkness even has Ultimecias moves and Grievers move Shockwave Pulsar.

Not to detract from the arrangement in any way because this is some seriously amazing work of course, to do a Nobuo song of this caliber justice and even exceed it (depending on who you ask lol), but I wouldn't be surprised if there is some Soken input in here as well since he's not only the primary composer but also THE sound director for FFXIV, surely it must have at least gone through him for final check or something.

How FF14 handles crossovers with other FF content is basically taking the general concepts and adapting it into 14's world/lore. Like Ruby, Diamond, Emerald, and Sapphire weapons from 7 were reimagined as magitek weapons from the Garlean Empire in 14. Here, the core of the Shadowbringers plot focuses on a world that's been overrun by Light and Sin Eaters, with Eden - from 8 - being "the first" Sin Eater, and exploring Eden's history and using Eden to kind of repair the damage to the world making up the raid series for Shadowbringers, and bringing a BUNCH of FF8 music in with that.

Generally XIV renditions of older FF themes try to be very faithful. It was the case with Dancing Mad that you listened to, it's also the case with Force your Way from the same raids than this one. Honestly I love hearing what it could have sounded with modern tools, but I feel like they still miss a little something, clean maybe, from the originals.
