Thank you for posting this! I've been playing this game from the ps2 (on ps4 now) and I'm trying to 100% it. This is the first time I've ever gotten all 5 chests. It took me 20 minutes since I knew how crucial the start was and how to track my progress. Before this I was using videos of people just doing it, no explanations. All I have to do now is get 0 seconds for the chocobo catcher!

It's all about that first chest. Finally got it!

This is the only one that isn't cancer because it doesn't involve rng. Yes the controls are kinda shitty but it's so much more bearable than the other minigames because it just depends on your own performance, and you can indeed improve and get it easy with practice. The first chest is the most important. Gotta get it in 6.5

Thankyou! I struggled with this minigame a lot. The original PS2 version was a lot easier. Square decided to include a hidden mechanic where the other chocobo slows down the more chests you have. Asshole move on their part. I got it by focusing on the beginning speed, like you, but also making sure to move down the middle of the path without hitting the walls, taking sharp corners, and keeping the analog stick in the next direction I want to go after the chocobo opens the chest and jumps.

If you got the steam version and only care about achievements, not the items, I can confirm that you don't need to worry about hitting the posts. I hit 1 and got 5 chests, still got the achievement.

Great guide but I suck will have to practice when I can grasp to snazzy controls lol

Tried like 15 times without this. Watched it. Got it first go. All I did was watch the line you run out of the gate. I was running hard to the right then staying in the middle. You went almost straight upward and it put you on the inside edge.

To extrapolate: when you are running this race, there are 2 chances to do the back and forth section which can get to the fifth chest. If you take the first path, in my experience, you will always lose, its 100% of the time for me. If you take the second path to obtain the fifth chest you will win 100% of the time, so long as you have the 39 second seed. Of course, it is possible that somehow you just suck at the last second and fail so... Individual results will vary

Been trying this race off and on from getting to the calm lands all the way to post game. Probably tried it over 50 times now, i can consistently get 5 chests and jump down to the track right behind the other chocobo but i just can't shave the extra .2 seconds i need! Not giving up but i am slowly going insane...

If you're having trouble, just remember the two timer markers he mentioned in the video. Really important, because it's the only way to gauge if you're ahead or behind. 6.5 for the first chest, 13.5 for the second. Usually by then, it's yours. The first two are the hardest.

He's been finishing in 32 second

Gah! I can get the first in 6.5 no problem, the second one, I have no clue how to get down to 12.5.

I think you have to complete chocobo training and beat the trainer in that awful chocobo catcher race... I think.

Examine the sphere to the far left past the save sphere, near the other chocobo and the Al bhed primer

Doesn't matter what I do, I can't get to the 5th chest under 34 seconds. I think I got there once at 33.8.

Took me 30-45min to do it

literally impossible to do on pc, you can't control the chocobo accurately enough with a keyboard.

@@espsasuke2 Well, I was a bit too frustrated I think, I did actually manage to do it. The time estimates really helped, by the time I got all the individual movements under control I managed to do it several times in a row even so it is definitely masterable, but still, that was insane. Having 4 ways movement makes it so incredibly jarring.

It's not really any easier for me on controller. Because the camera movement doesn't allow for character movement, the chocobo will go one way no matter how much I turn the stick. I'd have to stop it and turn it again.
